This is the story of Collett Leventhorpe (1815-1889), an Englishman and former captain in the 14th Regiment of Foot. Leventhorpe came to North Carolina about 1843, settled there, and later served the Confederacy as a colonel in the 34th and 11th N.C. and brigadier general commanding the Home Guard in eastern North Carolina. Though he trained as a physician at the College of Charleston in the late 1840s, he never practiced and was a restless man, endlessly in search of fortune--before the war in the gold fields of North Carolina and Georgia, and after it in the pursuit of lost estates, art treasures and inventions. But he excelled first and foremost as a Confederate soldier. As a field commander he was never defeated in battle, and his record was marred only by his own rejection of a much deserved but very late promotion to CSA brigadier. He lies buried in the beautiful Happy Valley section of Caldwell County.

The Guilford County Militia Records Book was recorded from 1806 through 1854. During this period, Guilford County supplied two regiments—the First and Second Regiment of the Guilford Militia—and one cavalry unit. The Guilford County Militia Records Book was set during a unique phase of the County's history with the County seat's relocation from Martinville (near the present site of the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park) to Greensborough (now downtown Greensboro) in 1808. By the 1830s, the “First Regiment of the Guilford Militia” was renamed the 57th Regiment of the North Carolina Militia. The “Second Regiment of the Guilford Militia” was renamed the 58th Regiment of the North Carolina Militia. The Guilford County Militia Records Book records mostly courts martial judgments of the First Regiment. In addition, this book contains rosters of officers, the names of courts martial defendants and the disciplinary actions they faced as well as the names of those exempted from militia service.
It's brave to author a book, in today's world, that professes to bring about peaceful living. It's especially courageous if you happen to be a Black Belt Martial artist. But that's exactly what Dr. Michael R. Foley has accomplished, and he has done a fine job of it. Teaching us the fight that leads to peace, the art of gentle power, and how to punch and kick and still be kind, Dr. Foley takes us on a journey of paradoxes that ultimately show us tangible, accessible ways to create peace--within ourselves and outside ourselves with people we encounter every day.His focus is on our children, the leaders of tomorrow, and how important it is to ensure that they learn the power of love and respect--beginning with themselves. While he embraces the value of physical skills, Dr. Foley believes that these skills become more valuable when students learn to enhaance their mental skills as well, creating a balance between the two. Without self-esteem and an expression of understanding toward other human beings, physical skills do nothing to help create a peaceful world. Without the ability to learn and live with mutual respect, our children are destined to suffer the same obstacles to peace that have plagued humankind for generations. With captivating photos of children of all ages practicing their forms--both girls and boys--Dr. Foley opens the door to a fresh perspective on the martial arts. It is one that will intrigue you and make you wish that you were one of the children in the photos, just now stepping out into the world with the greatest weapon of all--your mind.
