On 17 September 1949, C.N. Annadurai (Anna) founded the DMK after his split with Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy. The DMK slowly but surely caught the imagination of the Tamil masses. In 1962, faced with the prospect of a ban, the party shed its separatist agenda and in 1967, the DMK attained power for the first time in Tamil Nadu. Since then, it has remained a potent political force, first under M. Karunanidhi and recently under M.K. Stalin, who succeeded him. Weathering many a political storm, including the 1972 split when its mascot, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) broke away levelling corruption charges, its ejection from power in 1976 during the Emergency, the second dismissal in 1991 for its alleged dalliance with the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka, and the debilitating split in 1993, the party has proved resilient. It was voted back to power in Tamil Nadu in 2021. The DMK’s pioneering public distribution system and welfare populism have been a model for other states. Of late, the party has touted its ‘Dravidian Model’ of development as a viable national alternative. Its renewed emphasis on Tamil cultural nationalism and cooperative federalism aims to counter the current majoritarian political narrative. Yet, seventy-five years later, the DMK is more than ever under assault from caste and ultra-nationalist elements and persisting charges of unjust enrichment and dynastic politics. The tropical plant family Pandanaceae comprises three genera, Freycinetia, Pandanus and Sararanga. One-hundred and fourteen genera and 226 species of fungi were found on dead leaves of Pandanaceae collected in Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, Niue, Philippines, Seychelles, Vanuatu and Vietnam. Taxonomic issues within each fungus genus are discussed and reference made to preceding work. All species are written up with bibliographic details, relevant measurements of the current specimens, known habitat and distribution, collection details, and a discussion on taxonomic conclusions. New taxa (4 genera, 35 species) are fully described and illustrated, each with a plate showing relevant macro- and microscopic details. This book is intended to fill the need of both scientists and graduate students for a single source book containing the most necessary and relevant material on supercontinuum technology. It reviews the basic principles, surveys research results, and presents the current thinking of experts in the supercontinuum field.
This book contains papers presented at the 11th Symposium of Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE-11), held in Kolding, Denmark, from May 27-30, 2001. The objective of ESCAPE-11 is to highlight the use of computers and information technology tools, that is, the traditional CAPE topics as well as the new CAPE topics of current and future interests.The main theme for ESCAPE-11 is process and tools integration with emphasis on hybrid processing, cleaner and efficient technologies (process integration), computer aided systems for modelling, design, synthesis, control (tools integration) and industrial case studies (application of integrated strategies). The papers are arranged in terms of the following themes: computer aided control/operations, computer aided manufacturing, process and tools integration, and new frontiers in CAPE. A total of 188 papers, consisting of 5 keynote and 183 contributed papers are included in this book.
The book is designed to achieve two major purposes. The first is to describe the developments in water management policy in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. The strategic approach, the collaborative engagement, and, the nested adaptive systems approach represent a paradigm shift in water management in New Zealand. The second is to delineate the sustainability framework that underpins the Canterbury approach. The framework is based on the concept of developing sustainability strategies to address critical failure pathways. While the focus of the book is on Canterbury, comparative applications of the framework to issues in other parts of New Zealand and international issues are proposed. The book can be used in at least two ways. The first is the application of a sustainability framework to the management of water in Canterbury region. The second is the exposition of a sustainability framework that can be applied to the management of water in a region with the application to Canterbury as an illustrative case study.
This book uses meta-analysis to synthesize research on scaffolding and scaffolding-related interventions in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. Specifically, the volume examines the extent to which study quality, assessment type, and scaffolding characteristics (strategy, intended outcome, fading schedule, scaffolding intervention, and paired intervention) influence cognitive student outcomes. It includes detailed descriptions of the theoretical foundations of scaffolding, scaffolding strategies that have been proposed to meet different intended learning outcomes in STEM, and associated efficacy information. Furthermore, the book describes assessment strategies and study designs which can be used to evaluate the influence of scaffolding, and suggests new fields in which scaffolding strategies that have proven efficacious may be used.
Energy optimization and the optimization of water use have mainly been treated as separate problems in literature. The batch production schedules resulting from each of these formulations do not guarantee that the plant is operated optimally. Presented in this contribution is a formulation that addresses the optimization of both water and energy, while simultaneously optimizing the batch process schedule. The scheduling framework used in this study is based on the formulation by . This formulation has been shown to result in a significant reduction of computational time, an improvement of the objective function and leads to fewer time points. The objective is to improve the profitability of the plant by minimizing wastewater generation and utility usage. From a case study it was found that through only applying water integration the cost is reduced by 11.6%, by applying only energy integration the cost is reduced by 29.1% and by applying both energy and water integration the cost is reduced by 34.6%. This indicates that optimising water and energy integration in the same scheduling framework can reduce the operating cost and environmental impact significantly.
Metal removal processes - cutting and grinding in this book - are an integral part of a large number of manufacturing systems, either as the primary manufacturing process, or as an important part of preparing the tooling for other manufacturing processes. In recent years, industry and educational institutions have concentrated on the metal removal system, perhaps at the expense of the process. This book concentrates on metal removal processes, particularly on the modeling aspects that can either give a direct answer or suggest the general requirements as to how to control, improve or change a metal removal process. This modeling knowledge is more important with automated computer controlled systems than it has ever been before, because quantitative knowledge is needed to design and operate these systems. This senior undergraduate/graduate textbook is aimed at providing the quantitative knowledge, often times at an elementary level, for handling the technological aspects of setting up and operating a metal removal process and interpreting the experience of planning, operating and improving a metal removal process based on rule of thumb approaches.
