A hernia is where an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall. Hernias usually occur in the abdomen and there are several different types, each determined by its location within the abdomen. This book is an operative guide to laparoscopic hernia repair for practising and trainee surgeons. Beginning with an introduction and discussion on anatomy, the following section provides step by step guidance on the surgical repair of different types of hernia, and potential difficulties and complications. The final chapter provides a general overview of hernia, explaining classification, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. The book includes two interactive DVD ROMs demonstrating surgical techniques as well as high quality photographs and illustrations. Key points Concise guide to laparoscopic hernia repair for surgeons and trainees Provides step by step guidance on surgical procedures for different types of hernia Covers potential difficulties and complications in surgery Includes two DVD ROMs demonstrating techniques and high quality photographs and illustrations
Due to their unique optical, thermal, catalytic, magnetic and electronic properties, nano-sized semiconductors have a huge potential in a great number of technological applications, ranging from photovoltaics and photocatalysis to biosensors and medicine. In the last couple of decades, the synthesis and characterization of these materials has been of key interest not only to materials scientists but also to researchers working in the field of physics, chemistry, molecular biology and medicine. The main focus of the present book is the characterization of a number of nano-semiconducting materials, using such techniques as powder X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectrophotometry, Raman spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. The materials studied include ZnS, TiO2, NiO, Ga doped ZnO, Mn doped SnO2, Mn doped CeO2 and Mn doped ZrO2. Of special interest has been the analysis of the electron density distribution within the nano samples. The results give deep insights into the atomic structures on which these crystals are based and on the binding characteristics between the atoms and the ways in which these characteristics can be changed. As the decisive properties of these materials depend upon the electron density distributions and their variations due to sample preparation specifics, temperature and the presence of doping elements, these results give important hints on the direction in which further research should be directed.
The first book on dendrimers! The authors, pioneers in this scientific field, describe basic principles and current developments in the rapidly evolving field of dendrimer research. All aspects of the subject are covered: the authors provide a historical overview, theoretical background, and discussions of the synthesis and applications of dendrimers. The book thus spans organic chemistry and more application-orientated disciplines like material science and pharmaceutical chemistry. The excellent, detailed list of references further increases the value of the book. The optimal presentation of the structural formulas of dendrimers - highly symmetrical giant molecules - helps the reader understand the sophisticated synthesis quickly. This book will set the standard for further monographs on this subject.
This volume investigates 11 contemporary environmental justice narratives from Kerala, the south-western state in India. Introducing a detailed review of environmental literature in Malayalam, the selected eco-narratives are presented through two key literary genres: life narratives and novels, conveying the socio-environmental pressures, problems, and anxieties of modern, globalising Kerala. This text also entails primary investigations of ‘toxic fictions’ and ‘extractivist fictions,’ including Malayalam novels that narrate the disastrous consequences of the permeation of toxic pollutants in human and ecosystemic bodies, and novels that chronicle the impact of exploitative mining activities on the environment. All eco-narratives analysed in the book exhibit the familiar pattern of the Global South environmental narratives, namely, a close imbrication of the ecological and social spheres. Reading Contemporary Environmental Justice argues that these selected eco-texts offer inspiring scenarios where the subaltern people show thantedam, or courage, to claim thante idam, one’s own space in society and on the Earth. This volume will be essential for those looking to expand their understanding of environmental justice and the harmful effects of development and modernisation.
