This book presents key issues in the teaching of Chinese as a second or foreign language (TCSL or TCFL). It investigates how multimedia can help to assist TCSL/TCFL and explores practical effects of multimedia-assisted teaching at secondary schools in the Philippines. It addresses the psychology of TCSL/TCFL and discusses various recurring foreign graduate students concerns when learning academic Chinese in graduate institutes in Taiwan. It examines issues of educational assessment and testing, analyzing the validity of a self-made placement test for an immigrant Chinese program, as well as the psychological characteristics of adult learners and their implications for immigrant Chinese curriculum design. As foreign learners of Chinese grow exponentially, this cutting edge read conceptualizes the educational philosophy of TCSL/TCFL as a distinctive discipline.
This work addresses the multiple possibilities for using cinnamon for applications in food science technology and to help in the complimentary treatment and prevention of diseases, with priority given to secondary metabolites produced by this plant. Issues related to the functions of cinnamon and its applications, as well as the biosynthetic pathways of production by plants, are covered in depth. The link between food science and technology and specific medicinal plants has not been explored enough in the current literature, and this text looks to bridge this gap in its extensive coverage of cinnamon. CINNAMON: A Functional Food and Medicinal Plant provides readers with a broad and diverse overview of the importance of secondary metabolites produced by plants and the possibilities for innovative biotechnological approaches that introduce new potential to a wide range of industrial products. The application of cinnamon in products across food science and its numerous health benefits are outlined, including its use as a complimentary medicine for a number of diseases. This book features the main cinnamon varieties and production areas plus quality evaluation and bioactive compound extraction methods. The multiple applications of spices in foods are covered in depth, plus antioxidant activity and inhibitory effects on bacteria and fungi. Beyond its use in foods, readers will find chapters covering the antiviral effects of cinnamon and its use for the treatment and prevention of diabetes and other disorders. Also important is coverage on the safety aspects of cinnamon and its extracts. To date no book has exclusively covered the many uses of cinnamon and cinnamon extracts in food and pharmaceutical applications. This much-needed work provides a fully up to date and extensive overview for researchers to examine the many uses of cinnamon across multiple products and industries. .
This book argues that that the rise of great firms - those with sustainable high return on invested capital (ROIC) - will lay the foundation for China’s successful economic transformation. Drawn from the author’s research on corporate finance and the Chinese economy, the author maintains that being big could be easy but means little for corporate China, especially in the context of China’s transition from an investment-led economy to an efficiency-driven one. The work discusses both internal and external impediments that lead to lack of great companies in China and suggests institutional conditions which foster the rise of great companies in China, including, reversing the government’s obsession with GDP, reforming the financial system, and promoting entrepreneurship. Policy makers, investors, corporate executives, and MBA students and scholars will appreciate case studies of Huawei, Alibaba, Xiaomi, and Lenovo, among others, that illustrate the endeavors made by Chinese entrepreneurs at the grassroots level and highlight what makes successful companies in China.
This book sets out a systematic piece of research which attempts to assess the level of energy security in China, investigate how national energy supply security might be improved, and consider how energy trade risks might be reduced.
This book discusses China’s tax system, presenting a comprehensive and systematic research based on a multidisciplinary approach involving economics, finance, political science, sociology, law, public administration, history, and econometrics. With China moving toward the rule of law, this book proposes reforms to the tax laws and the stratified governance with a view to achieving tax neutrality, law-based taxation, tax equality and tax burden stability. It focuses on clarifying the implications, extension, nature, and features of a law-based tax system as well as the logical relationships between the optimization of the tax system structure, modern governance, law-based tax administration, as well as the tax-sharing system of tax collection and the rule of tax law. It suggests that optimizing the tax structure, reforming the tax-sharing system, improving local taxes, and restructuring the tax collection and management system will push China's tax system toward sound design and rule of law. This book is intended for scholars specializing in China’s tax system and general readers interested in China’s economy.
This book aims to evaluate and improve the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of automotive lithium-ion batteries. The authors first introduce the basic working principle and dynamic test characteristics of lithium-ion batteries. They present the dynamic transfer model, compare it with the traditional second-order reserve capacity (RC) model, and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed new model. In addition, they propose the chaotic firefly optimization algorithm and demonstrate its effectiveness in improving the accuracy of SOC and SOH estimation through theoretical and experimental analysis. The book will benefit researchers and engineers in the new energy industry and provide students of science and engineering with some innovative aspects of battery modeling.
