This book is a compendium of lesson plans for classroom exercises designed to foster philosophical inquiry with young people. It introduces the reader to a wide range of activities for exploring philosophical questions and problems with children from pre-school age through high-school. There are lessons for a full-range of topics in philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics, and each is intended to help foster a supportive and caring classroom community of inquiry. All of the activities have been used on numerous occasions and include reflections on what teachers who employ the lesson might expect when doing so. Using this book, teachers, parents, and others can successfully being fostering philosophical inquiry with young people of all ages.
Chinese Canadians have been among the earliest of settlers to this land we now call British Columbia. This book celebrates a community whose legacy can be found as physical traces in the landscape, and in the social and economic transformations that have occurred over the decades in the larger society. As a result of the 2014 apology, supported by all members of the legislative assembly, for historic laws directly and specifically imposed on Chinese Canadians by past provincial governments, a number of legacy projects were formulated. These projects, including this book, Celebration: Chinese Canadian Legacies in British Columbia, were developed and advised by a council consisting of community leaders and academics (in total, 20 members and two co-chairs). As with all legacy projects, this book reflects the goals of educating the public and increasing awareness of past discriminatory practices. As well, it celebrates heritage values and the community’s achievements. By focusing on individual stories, the book’s intention is to illustrate and contextualize the development and history of Chinese Canadians, recognizing their perseverance, bearing, and dignity while enduring the hardships resulting from the overt racism of the late 19th and early 20th century. This selection is focused on coatings and films with applications in optoelectronics, such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and light-based sensors and phenomena. The studies investigate the optimal composition, crystalline structure, and morphology to deliver the different functionalities sought. Obtaining transparent p-type electrodes is challenging but extremely relevant in optoelectronics. Electric conduction mechanisms and the correlations with structure and doping are discussed. The important issue of the degradation pathways in perovskite-based solar cells and the possibilities offered by different types of coatings to encapsulate the devices as well as the beneficial effect of silica coating as an antireflection and antisoiling layer on well-established solar cells are discussed. New designs of nanoplasmonic films for chemical and biological molecule sensing are reviewed, such as the combination of metallic nanoparticles and nanostructured semiconductors and dispersing metallic or bi-metallic nanoparticles in CuO films. The impacts of structure, defects, and morphology on the photoactivated properties of WO3 films and on the shape memory behavior in Cu–Al–Ni thin films are discussed. Aggregated TiO2 nanoparticles on TiO2 layers are shown to enhance optical transmittance and confer a superhydrophilic characteristic. Finally, aspects of the fundamental characterization of thin films, Drude damping in thin films, and laser-induced deflection technique are discussed.
