This book explores the ‘folk’ performance genre of Kobigaan, a dialogic song-theatre form in which performers verse-duel, in contemporary West Bengal in India and Bangladesh. Thought to be a nearly extinct form, the book shows how the genre is still prevalent in the region. The author shows how like many other ‘folk’ practices in South and South-East Asia, the content and format of this genre has undergone vital changes thus raising questions of authenticity, patronage and cultural politics. She captures live performances of Kobigaan through ethnographies spread across borders — from village rituals to urban festivals, and from Bengali cinema to television and new media. While understanding Kobigaan from the practitioners’ points-of-view, this book also explores the crucial issues of gender, marginalization and representation that is true of any performance genre. Drawing on case studies, it underlines the issues of artistic agency, empowerment, cultural labour and heritage, ritual, authenticity, creative industries, media, gender, and identity politics. Part of the ‘South Asian History and Culture’ series, this book is a major intervention in South Asian folklore and performance studies. It also expands into the larger disciplines of literature, social and cultural movements in South Asia, ethnomusicology and the politics of performance.

“Somewhere, buried beneath the blur of blood and cries, behind the folds of insanity, the truth was waiting for her.’ - Fragments of Delores coming May 25th 2020” - Claire C. Riley, Fragments of Delores
Perhaps the fierest debate on the Indus civilization is over the reasons for the end of the India’s earliest cities. Did they dramatically collapsed or was there steady urban decline? Was the decline a result of in roads by the Aryans or did rivers, earthquakes, or climatic shifts contribute to the disintegration? Was the end marked by a cultural fracture or regional migrations from the core areas to the areas which offered better subsistence possibilities? The recent studies do not accept the Aryan invasion theory or the inundation theory or the tectonic upliftment concept as it is not warranted by any scientific or rationale evidences. It seems likely that the decline of the Harappan civilization was mainly due to ecological imbalances. The delicate ecological balances of semi-arid areas (Harappa and Mohenjodaro) was being disturbed because the human and cattle populations in these areas was fast depleting the scanty forest, food and fuel resources. Thus, the growing populations of men and animals confronted by scanty resources wore out the landscape. This depletion of the subsistence base caused strain on the entire economy. Moreover, the drift of the monsoon to the west necessitated the Harappan people to migrate to the areas of Gujarat, Haryana which provided better survival possibilities.
“Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land-up amongst the stars.” Women of the 1900’s gave us much to aspire for, almost causing a metamorphosis in the way we viewed our ambitions. It became a birth-right, rather than unconventional. From Indira Gandhi’s ferocious reign over India, to Queen Elizabeth’s ascetic rule over the throne, to Mother Teresa’s gentle ways, we got see the many facets of successful women. So then the eager, unchaste and rebellious women of the millennium, decided to take their career ambitions a step-ahead, but also a step-back and include the joys of motherhood and domestication. When a bird is given the chance to flee the nest, it always flies back because the warmth and protection of a home and family is encouraging. So, as much as we women love to conquer new feats in our careers, we love coming-back home to the familiarity and love of a home and family. We make sure that the dinners on the table are as crisp and well turned-out as the products at work, and this balance makes us feel invincible. It’s a high like no other. However, the struggles to create that balance often begins with the change in mindset. So, rather than being all feminist about it, and tipping the scales to a one-sided bias, let us accept and give credit to the those fathers, husbands, partners , uncles and brothers that sowed these seeds of aspirations and acceptance into former-patriarchal societies. Let’s not make it a power-struggle and give importance to each other towards our success. This work-life balance, and all the sha-bang that is attached to it, is an accumulation of hardwork, meticulous planning, open-mindedness towards criticism and accepting eminent changes in life, to become better, more resilient and more fabulous version of ourselves.
No Nation for Women takes a hard, close look at what makes India unsafe for its women — from custodial rapes and honour killings to rapes of minors and trafficking — the author uncovers many unpalatable truths behind what we are familiar with as newspaper headlines only... Numbers convey, in part, why India is referred to as one of the world’s rape capitals — one woman is raped every 15 minutes; and, in 50 years, there has been a staggering rise of 873 per cent in sexual crimes against girls. And beyond the numbers and statistics, there are stories, often unreported — of women in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, who are routinely raped if they spurn the advances of men; of girls from de-notified tribes in central India who have no recourse to justice if sexually violated; of victimized lower-caste girls in small-town Baduan, Uttar Pradesh; of frequent dislocation faced by survivor families in West Bengal; of political wrath turning into rape in Tripura. Priyanka Dubey travels through large swathes of India, over a period of six years, to uncover the accounts of disenfranchised women who are caught in the grip of patriarchy and violence. She asks if, after the globally reported December 2012 gang-rape of ‘Nirbhaya’ in New Delhi, India’s gender narrative has shifted — and, if it hasn’t, what needs to be done to make this a nation worthy of its women.
Advanced GIS and Crime Analysis explores the existing spatial variability of crime committed against women in West Bengal and steadily excavates the underlying determinants accountable for specific crimes against women. The book applies GIS technologies to visualise complex crime patterns over space and suggests specific measures to curb oppression. The book applies statistical methods and GIS techniques to visualise the vulnerable areas of crime against women in West Bengal and critically discusses emerging criminogenic issues with respect to theoretical understanding and immediate situations. The determination of the most significant crime hotspots, deliberation of substantial facts through a variety of collective socio-economic as well as environmental perspectives, and suggestive measures will assist law enforcement officials, practitioners, and policymakers in adopting immediate, effective measures. Advanced GIS and Crime Analysis will be beneficial for students of criminology, research scholars, practitioners, urban planners, and policymakers to understand the complex crime patterns that exist in West Bengal.

This is a book about understanding women’s empowerment and pathways as well as roadblocks to women’s economic empowerment in rural India, as understood through an evaluation-based research of a state-funded social sector programme located in the education department – Mahila Samakhya (MS) – in Bihar, one of the socially and educationally most underdeveloped Indian states. The book presents findings of the three-year research that adopted a mixed-methods approach and evaluated the impact of MS on various facets of empowerment of women coming from the most marginalized communities. The study, therefore, tries to go beyond evaluating the MS programme and uses the research findings and insights to raise certain critical issues pertaining to social policy planning and implementation, especially in the context of women’s education and empowerment. Concussion, even in its mildest form, can have lasting effects on the individual in a way we're only just beginning to understand. Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBI), concussion and post-concussion syndrome have previously been conservatively managed with recommendations for 'rest'. But even mild brain injuries and post-concussion syndrome can have an enormous impact on life, long after the 3 months during which they are expected to resolve. There are also significant differences between the way in which concussion affects men and women respectively, as this new research shows. If concussion or an mTBI are affecting you, there is much in this book to help and support your symptoms. Neuropsychologist Dr Priyanka Pradhan has pulled together the latest research to provide a complete manual for overcoming the impact of any mild brain injury, while writer and coach Anna Leggett gives deep insight from her own experiences with post-concussion syndrome. Their book not only explains what a concussion is and how it may present, but also gives comprehensive practical strategies for managing persistent symptoms. Such strategies include how to ask for professional and specialist medical help (and where to get it from), and also some simple self-management techniques. Understanding and Living Well with Post-Concussion Syndrome also explains the importance of sleep and diet, and includes significant psychological and emotional support for mental wellbeing and recovery, a support that is often missing from the clinical pathway for post-concussion syndrome. This book is an essential resource for anyone who feels that they need insight, practical help and emotional support into what is often perceived as an almost-invisible illness, but one which is very real for you or your loved one.

Addictions arise from feelings of inability to cope with a new environment or situation in one’s life. The repetitive feature of rewarding yourself with that substance or being in a certain environment directly effects the rewards, reinforcement and memory systems of your brain. Thus, you feel happy. For Mishka, it was a case of acceptance. Having grown up in a very protected environment, with her parents closely guarding and nurturing her, work was like a marriage of sorts for her. It was a new relationship, a new kind of belonging and for the first time ever, she was needed rather than being the needy one. Her boss and her collegues at work were literally clinging onto her with their requests and she had become n intricate part of this ongoing, linear network that created professionals out of amateurs. So the more and more her work was appreciated, the more she was sucked into this volcano of talent that made her match-upto the world’s standards. She was celebrated, she was wanted, she became strong and her skill-set grew in leaps and bounds. Then came a new tide in her life, that seemed to wash-off her senses and shook up the very bearings that she had begun to form in her professional career. This new tide was a successful lawyer by the name of Amrik Singh Gogia. Was he going to sweep her off her feet and let the waves of growth and accolades cloak the shores of her success? Was he going to stand-by and let her experience it? Or was he going to step-aside and let her experience it on her own, alone? Confessions of a Workoholic, is a journey of a young women that felt discouraged at the mere thought of bargaining her way through a successful career, through the vehicle of 5 letters that she writes to her father on a journey of discovery, self-worth and growth.
Priyanka Mattoo was born into a wooden house in the Himalayas, as were most of her ancestors. In 1989, however, mounting violence in the region forced Mattoo’s community to flee. The home into which her family poured their dreams was reduced to a pile of rubble. Mattoo never moved back to her beloved Kashmir—because it no longer existed. She and her family just kept packing and unpacking and moving on. In forty years, Mattoo accumulated thirty-two different addresses, and she chronicles her nomadic existence with wit, wisdom, and an inimitable eye for light within the darkest moments.
