The present study was carried out for phytochemical screening and pharmacological investigations on methanolic extract of rhizomes of Hedychium coronarium (Local name: Dolan Champa, Family: Zingiberaceae). In this study, the possible analgesic and CNS (Central Nervous System) depressant activities of the methanolic rhizome extract of Hedychium coronarium were investigated at the doses of 100 mg/Kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/Kg body weight on mice by oral administration. The analgesic activities were investigated for their central and peripheral pharmacological actions using tail immersion testing and acetic acid-induced writhing testing respectively. Its CNS depressant activity was evaluated by using hole cross and open field tests and the cytotoxic activity was observed using brine shrimp lethality bioassay.
Since primeval times, plants have been utilized as a potent source of medicine to treat many life-threatening diseases. One of the potential ways to evaluate the importance of a medicinal plant is to identify its active chemical constituents and pharmacological activities. Thus, the present study involves a thorough discussion about the general description, phytochemistry and medicinal properties of five different plants: Gymnema sylvestre, Momordica charantia, Coccinia cordifolia, Trigonella foenum-graecum and Lagerstroemia speciosa. All five selected plants belong to different families but possess similar pharmacological activities such as anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, hypolipidemic and so on. Here, the authors have reviewed all reported chemical constituents as well as the pharmacological activities of the examined plants.

Scientific Study from the year 2012 in the subject Pharmacology, grade: A, Jahangirnagar University (Department of Pharmacy), language: English, abstract: In this ethnopharmacological study, the ethanolic extract of Commelina appendiculata (EECA) was subjected to pharmacological activity test. Phytochemical study revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides and alkaloids in the ethanolic extract of Commelina appendiculata. In Swiss albino mice, analgesic, cns depressant and antidiarrhoeal activity were investigated. The extract was also evaluated for cytototoxic activity.
