Prakash Kumar documents the history of agricultural indigo, exploring the effects of nineteenth-century globalization on a colonial industry in South Asia. Kumar discusses how the knowledge of indigo culture thrived among peasant traditions on the Indian subcontinent in the early modern period. Caribbean planters and French naturalists then developed and codified this knowledge into widely disseminated texts. European planters who began to settle in Bengal with the establishment of British rule in the third quarter of the eighteenth century drew on this network of information. Through the nineteenth century, indigo culture in Bengal became more modern, science-based, and expert driven. When a cheaper and purer synthetic indigo was created in 1897, the planters and the colonial state established laboratories to find ways to cheapen the cost of the agricultural dye and improve its purity. This indigo science crossed paths with the colonial state's effort to develop a science for agricultural development. For two decades, natural indigo survived the competition of the industrial substitute. The indigo industry's optimism faded only at the end of the First World War, when German proprietary knowledge of synthetic indigo became widely available and the industrial use of synthetic indigo for textile dyeing and printing became almost universal.

Kidney stones form when minerals accumulate in the kidneys or urinary tract and cannot be dissolved by urine. Various factors, including environmental, genetic, and dietary influences, can contribute to the growth and development of kidney stones. The clinical presentation of lithiasis varies from being asymptomatic to experiencing acute renal colic. Diagnosis typically involves using imaging studies and laboratory investigations to identify the stones' types and underlying causes. There are various management strategies available for kidney stones, ranging from conservative measures to more invasive interventions. This work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of lithiasis, covering its etiology, diagnosis, and management, with a focus on recent advances in research and clinical practice. Non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are of intense interest in current low-temperature plasma research because of their immense potential for material processing and biomedical applications. Depending on the jet configuration and the electrical excitation, plasma characteristics including heat, charged particle, electric field, and chemically active species may differ significantly. Other important parameters of importance in these studies are the kind of utilized working gas and gas flow rate. This book presents the electrical characterization of DBD-based APPJs for three electrode arrangements: ring electrode, pin electrode and floating helix electrode configurations. The analysis presented here will serve to help in establishing an optimum range of operation for a cold plasma jet without arcing and without any physical damage to the electrodes. Furthermore, the experimental results provided in the book establish the significance of the type of working gas on the power consumption and on the jet length obtained. These developed cold DBD-based APPJs of larger lengths may be useful for diverse biological applications and surface treatments.

Using 2011-12 consumption micro-data, we find that nearly one-third of the variation in living standards in India can be explained by location alone. Consumption levels and locational inequality are positively related. In effect, from an individual’s perspective, living standards are higher in richer, but more unequal, locations in India. The central factor behind these findings is the large difference in average consumption levels between rural and urban India and continued divergence in per-capita incomes between rich and poor states. Our results provide a possible explanation for the persistence of economic migration from rural to urban areas within a fast-growing emerging economy. While individuals cannot easily alter specific characteristics like their caste or religion, they have some freedom to change their location to enjoy better living standards.
