They meet again, this time for keeps, and explore the joys of living an uncharted life together, unfazed by conventional social norms then or since. It’s a journey through the uncertain late forties, the penny-pinching days in the fifties, the schools of life in the early sixties and the ups and downs of living in Calcutta, Bombay, Delhi and London, cushioned by executive privileges in multi-national corporations in the seventies and eighties. Nomadic instincts resurface in the nineties. They join the ranks of backpacking hitch hikers, albeit dressed in flannels and blazers, checking into cheap lodgings in the back alleys of cities big and small in Europe, North and South America. The very ‘ unique’ insights they get into the cultures across the world, over many cups of wine in cafes and bars, from colourful ‘locals’ should make an interesting, if not fascinating, read. Back into the conventional life, the early Millennium years go in a whirl, alas a little too fast.

This book explores the past and present of information infrastructures in India. Grounded in infrastructure theory, it explores the historical continuities between information infrastructures in colonial and post-colonial India and the compulsions of information infrastructures in contemporary India. This volume highlights the roles played by private and public sector entities in shaping information infrastructures in India, the political economy of growth in this sector and the challenges faced by the State in regulating information platforms that are also information infrastructures. It includes separate chapters on oceanic cable infrastructures that account for more than 90 per cent of data traffic between India and the rest of the world and the political economy of India's satellite program. Taking the 'long view', it argues that the provisionings of information infrastructures are by no means straight forward, that they are always expressions that are shaped by internal and external contestations, by ideological ends and business imperatives, the needs of consumers/citizens and the State, that there is a politics of infrastructure that needs to be accounted for, and that there always are winners and losers in large infrastructural projects such as Digital India.

The book focuses on Henry Irwin, a man who began his life in India as a PWD engineer and subsequently rose to the position of consulting architect to the government of Madras succeeding Robert Fellowes Chisholm, his predecessor in that office. Many of Irwins creations continue to dominate the Madras skyline and are held in high esteem by local denizens. However, the blatant hybridity of some of these monuments, coupled with the fact that they failed to reflect the attempt to legitimize colonial rule, also accounted for their transience as an architectural movement. Parallels drawn with the colonial architecture of Calcutta and Bombay, not to speak of the impact of Indo-Saracenic architecture on some of Indias princely states, draw attention to the movement. Likewise, its authenticity has been questioned against the backdrop of the architectural legacy of the home country during the same period.
