This modern romance explores the tumultuous love story of Jason and Alice; two star-crossed lovers from different worlds. Jason is a computing professional of Caribbean heritage, born and raised in London. Jason is struggling to come to terms with his unwitting preference for White women; along with the societal and cultural implications in a world increasingly divided by race. Jason stumbles across Alice; a good-natured, but slightly naive nurse, who has moved to the city from the countryside. The pair begin their journey amid a backdrop of growing racial tension in the city; tension triggered by an act of police brutality that is shrouded in governmental conspiracy. As the love-struck couple spend more time together, the complexities of interracial dating present challenging hurdles to overcome. Jason is called to demonstrate his commitment to his people by a Pro Black activist group, as revelations of Alice’s supposed infidelity and subterfuge come to light. Alice is compelled to interrogate what it truly means to be in an interracial relationship in the 21st century; a time where colour-blindness is no longer a strategy. In addition to their individual journeys of reflection, examination and discovery; they have to manage pressure from: friends, family and wider society, as they determine if what they have is worth fighting for - will they make it?

Is it possible for visionary leaders to adhere to their idealism and integrity without becoming casualties of corporate conservatism and executive-level politics? This book says "yes," arguing for the need for visionary change agents in organizations and resolving the paradox of visionary change in a bureaucratic environment. Why do many companies state they want change but then often fire employees who truly rock the boat in their efforts to shift the paradigm to make improvements? How should "disposable visionaries"—leaders who are passionate about new ideas, but who underestimate or intentionally ignore the political environment that supports maintaining the status quo and consequently are in danger of losing their jobs—keep their passion regardless of the opposition... and also keep their jobs? Written with wit and filled with poignant insights and well-documented examples, this book provides practical advice and encouragement to those who are driven to promote new ideas and reach new levels of achievement. Not just for executive-level corporate leaders frustrated by their company's resistance to change, the information and inspiration presented will be enlightening to anyone who has ever been puzzled or annoyed by obstructive internal politics at work. Readers will come away with effective ways to deal with politics, champion breakthrough innovation, be recognized as their organization's most valuable asset, and unlock their potential to change the competitive playing field. They always win the halftime. Members of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, embodying the spirit, camaraderie, and excellence of the school they represent, have marched and played proudly for 125 years. Here is the story of the music, the precision, and the tradition of the exceptional band that marches to the beat pulsing through the spirit of Aggieland. Illustrated throughout with historical and contemporary images, this lively history pays tribute to the bandmasters and musicians who have made this organization the pride of Aggies everywhere. Organized around the tenure of its founder, Joseph Holick, and its directors—Richard J. Dunn, E. V. Adams, Joe T. Haney, Ray E. Toler, and Timothy B. Rhea—the book marches through 125 years of tradition and excellence. From the birth of the band, through the development of its marching style, to its most recent triumphs of precision maneuvers and military music, the story is as bold and bright as the band itself. War years, fish bands, boots, band lyres, corps trips, parades, and other traditions known and loved by former band members and other former students of Texas A&M University fill the book’s pages. An appendix lists all of the band’s eight thousand–plus present and former members. This is the story of the determination, discipline, and enduring pride that rests deep in the heart of those young men and women who have been tough enough, proud enough, and good enough to be the noble men and women of Kyle.

A shocking exposé of rampant, decades-long incompetence at the National Rifle Association, as told by a former member of its senior leadership. Joshua L. Powell is the NRA--a lifelong gun advocate, in 2016, he began his new role as a senior strategist and chief of staff to NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. What Powell uncovered was horrifying: "the waste and dysfunction at the NRA was staggering." INSIDE THE NRA reveals for the first time the rise and fall of the most powerful political organization in America--how the NRA became feared as the Death Star of Washington lobbies and so militant and extreme as "to create and fuel the toxicity of the gun debate until it became outright explosive." INSIDE THE NRA explains this intentional toxic messaging was wholly the product of LaPierre's leadership and the extremist branding by his longtime PR puppet master Angus McQueen. In damning detail, Powell exposes the NRA's plan to "pour gasoline" on the fire in the fight against gun control, to sow discord to fill its coffers, and to secure the presidency for Donald J. Trump.

The ancient Greek hymnic tradition translated beautifully and accessibly. The hymn—as poetry, as craft, as a tool for worship and philosophy—was a vital art form throughout antiquity. Although the Homeric Hymns have long been popular, other equally important collections have not been readily accessible to students eager to learn about ancient poetry. In reading hymns, we also gain valuable insight into life in the classical world. In this collection, early Homeric Hymns of uncertain authorship appear along with the carefully wrought hymns of the great Hellenistic poet and courtier Callimachus; the mystical writings attributed to the legendary poet Orpheus, written as Christianity was taking over the ancient world; and finally, the hymns of Proclus, the last great pagan philosopher of antiquity, from the fifth century AD, whose intellectual influence throughout western culture has been profound. Greek Poems to the Gods distills over a thousand years of the ancient Greek hymnic tradition into a single volume. Acclaimed translator Barry B. Powell brings these fabulous texts to life in English, hewing closely to the poetic beauty of the original Greek. His superb introductions and notes give readers essential context, making the hymns as accessible to a beginner approaching them for the first time as to an advanced student continuing to explore their secrets. Brilliant illustrations from ancient art enliven and enrichen the experience of reading these poems.
Choice Outstanding Academic Title of 2018 International adoption is in a state of virtual collapse, rates having fallen by more than half since 2004 and continuing to fall. Yet around the world millions of orphaned and vulnerable children need permanent homes, and thousands of American and European families are eager to take them in. Many government officials, international bureaucrats, and social commentators claim these adoptions are not "in the best interests" of the child. They claim that adoption deprives children of their "birth culture," threatens their racial identities, and even encourages widespread child trafficking. Celebrity adopters are publicly excoriated for stealing children from their birth families. This book argues that opposition to adoption ostensibly based on the well-being of the child is often a smokescreen for protecting national pride. Concerns about the harm done by transracial adoption are largely inconsistent with empirical evidence. As for trafficking, opponents of international adoption want to shut it down because it is too much like a market for children. But this book offers a radical challenge to this view—that is, what if instead of trying to suppress market forces in international adoption, we embraced them so they could be properly regulated? What if the international system functioned more like open adoption in the United States, where birth and adoptive parents can meet and privately negotiate the exchange of parental rights? This arrangement, the authors argue, could eliminate the abuses that currently haunt international adoption. The authors challenge the prevailing wisdom with their economic analyses and provocative analogies from other policy realms. Based on their own family's experience with the adoption process, they also write frankly about how that process feels for parents and children.

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul looks at how Jesus' teachings were supplanted by St. Paul's doctrines. Jesus is presented to the reader of the New Testament with two different personalities. He is first described as a Jewish Rabbi recognized by His followers as the promised Hebrew Messiah. His second personality, stripped of its Jewish-ness, is somewhat like that of a Greco-Roman god. His Disciples were Hebrew in the first instance and in the second, they were mostly Greco-Roman. Saint Paul authored most of the Greco-Roman tenets in the New Testament, of course. He became a citizen of Rome as Saul of Tarsus, but is now known as Saint Paul. For centuries theologians seem to have preferred Paul's doctrines to the teachings of Jesus and have shaped a message over the years that our faith must be placed in Jesus' death, not in His life. As Christianity took shape, Paul battled to get his Greco-Roman dogma accepted. Those persons supporting Paul soon developed a strategy to accomplish that feat. Belittling the Disciples was one approach to the problem, it appears. This is especially true of Peter in some of Paul's Galatians passages.

Throughout their history, the Jamaican people perpetually struggle to survive under extraordinarily harsh economic and social conditions. from a historical perspective, this is fundamental to understanding the psyche of Jamaicans migrating to and settling in Canada in search of a better and more prosperous life. Therefore, their courage and determination have a backdrop, which the reader must be familiar with in order to understand the Jamaican desire f or respect, peace and dignity. Significantly this book provides a classic account of the Jamaican experience settling in Canada over a period of five decades starting from the 1950s and lasting until the 2000s. It is divided into five chapters, three of which encompass interviews with individuals who immigrated to Canada. Each of the three chapters covers a twenty year period: the 1950s and 60s, the 1970s and 80s, and the 1990s and beyond. in order to provide a credible description of what the general experience might entail, three heuristic methods were employed to gather the most accurate data available. a literature review was conducted to expand and strengthen the author's knowledge base of the subject matter. the auth or researched a number of books, newspaper articles and internet publications which provided critical perspectives from writers who tried to interpret attitudes and behaviors directed at Jamaicans on their journey towards settling in Canada. These perspectives include covert and overt issues connected to various categories of immigrants: those who came under the nursing, domestic, and seasonal agricultural worker programs and those who came as visitors. Furthermore, a plethora of literature was reviewed about Jamaicans, in general, (including middle and upper class Jamaicans who came to Canada significantly as independents) and their achievements. This secondary information and paper-based survey data assisted the auth or in crafting the last two chapters of the book.
