Jet airliner operations in the United States began in 1958, bringing, it was thought, a new era of fast, high, safe, smooth, sophisticated travel. But almost immediately, the new aircraft were involved in incidents and accidents that showed jets created new problems even as they solved old ones. This book discusses five disasters or near-disasters of the early Jet Age, experiences which shook the industry, regulators and public out of early complacency and helped build a more realistic foundation for safer air transportation. Special attention is paid to the 1966 destruction of Braniff International Airways Flight 250 in Nebraska. Nearly two years of inquiry helped advance the understanding of jet operations in severe weather and saw the first use of cockpit voice recorder technology in an aviation accident investigation. In addition, a University of Chicago professor, Dr. Tetsuya "Ted" Fujita, conducted a more intensive investigation of the weather system which downed Flight 250. Dr. Fujita's already extensive knowledge of thunderstorms and tornadoes led to his creation of the Fujita Scale of Tornado Intensity, the F-scale that we hear about so frequently during storm season.

Based on examination of more than 6,600 adult specimens, this work treats the Nearctic fauna of Eustrophinae (Tetratomidae), a relatively obscure, but potentially ecologically significant, group of beetles associated with wood-rotting fungi in most forest ecosystems. Five genera and 12 species are recognized: Pseudoholostrophus (Pseudoholostrophus) impressicollis (LeConte), P. (Holostrophinus) discolor (Horn), Holostrophus bifasciatus (Say), Eustrophus tomentosus Say, Eustrophopsis confinis (LeConte), E. bicolor (Fabricius), E. brunneimarginatus (Dury), E. indistinctus (LeConte), E. arizonensis (Horn), E. ornatus (Van Dyke), and Synstrophus repandus (Horn). A new species, Eustrophopsis crowdyi is described from southern Arizona. An identification key, supplemented with color photographs of the body (dorsal and lateral), frontal view of head, prosternal process and other structural features, is presented. Distribution maps of known geographical ranges in Canada and the United States (and Mexico for three southern species) are included, supplemented by detailed locality data. In addition to the taxonomic analyses, preliminary comments are made on the biogeography of the Nearctic Eustrophinae, as well as their natural history and ecological importance in forest habitats.

In the three decades between 1946 and 1976, the Central Flying School which was based at Little Rissington, produced over 6000 fledgling Qualified Flying Instructors and continually endeavoured to monitor and improve the wider Royal Air Force's standards of flying, based on its sound, proven instructional methods and a wealth of tradition extending back to Upavon in 1912. With the cessation of hostilities in 1945, the station's role took on a new dimension with the arrival of the Central Flying School (CFS) from RAF Upavon in the following year. The main function of CFS was to fulfil RAF requirements and assist some Commonwealth air force requirements for flying instructors. RAF Little Rissington became CFS's important focal base for the next thirty years. The book covers the 1946 to 1976 period and has been drawn from from the records at the National Archives, the RAF Museum, the Central Flying School Archive, and from published sources. Anecdotes and recollections from over 100 service and civilian personnel, ranging from Air Marshals to AC2s, who were once based at Little Rissington bring these unfolding years to life.
