House of David barnstorming baseball (1915-1957) was played without pre-determined schedules, leagues, player statistics or standings. The Davids quickly gained popularity for their hirsute appearance and flashy, fast-paced style of play. During their 200 seasons, they travelled as many as 30,000 miles, criss-crossing the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Benton Harbor teams invented the pepper game and were winners year after year, becoming legends in barnstorming baseball. Initially a loose affiliation of players, the Davids expanded to three teams--Western, Central and Eastern--as their reputation grew, and hired outsiders to fill the rosters. Prominent among them were pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Charlie "Chief" Bender, both player managers in the early 1930s. They resisted the color barrier, eagerly facing Negro League teams everywhere. In 1934, before their largest crowd to date, they defeated the first Negro team invited to the famed Denver Post Tournament, the great Kansas City Monarchs, for the championship.

I was born with inflammation of the lungs, and of everything else, I believe, that was capable of inflammation,' returned Mr Bounderby. It affects at least 12% of school children and 5 % of adults in the UK. This amounts to around 140 patients in a General Practitioner's average list of 2000, not all of whom can be managed by specialist chest clinics and over half of whom will require prophylactic therapy. There are therefore at least 3 million sufferers in Britain today. Yet, despite the improvement in treatment available in the past decade there has been a rise in numbers of attacks of acute asthma, notably in children, and a consequent rise in hospital admissions. The same pattern is also seen in adults, albeit less marked. Despite a number of possible incriminating causes, the real reasons for the rise are not clear. Whatever the cause may be, the inevitable effect is clear - the workload of doctors and nurses is expanding with only now, in the mid-1990s, the suggestion that this increase has begun to level off. Each year around 2000 people die from asthma in England and Wales and two-thirds of these deaths are preventable. The economic costs of asthma are huge.

The proportion of the UK and US populations which are overweight or obese, by any measure, has substantially risen over the past decade, and similar increases have been observed in other western nations as well as rapidly modernizing societies (Hodge et a/. , 1996). The physiological, psychological, and social! environmental fac tors which may be implicated in the aetiology, maintenance, and treat ment of these conditions have been the subject of an extraordinary volume of human and animal research, scientific conferences, and techni cal and popular literature. This book focuses specifically on the role of food and eating in overeat ing and obesity, emphasizing the relationships between people and food which may give rise to positive energy balance, and the potential contri butions of specific components, foods, or groups of foods. The intent is to integrate the psychobiological and cognitive psychological aspects of appetite, food preferences, and food selection with physiological and metabolic outcomes of eating behaviours. The ingestion of a particular quality and quantity of food is a voluntary behaviour, and that act, its determinants, features and sequelae are explored here, considering wider academic thought but guided by potential practical implications.
