Pippa Grange has something to teach all of us when it comes to letting go of perfectionism and anxiety, and living with open hearts rather than clenched fists. Fear Less is a total game-changer.' Brené Brown If we were truly free from fear, what could we achieve? We strive for success, but we are rarely happy. The more we try to win - putting on a brave face for work or family - the more we risk losing ourselves. And even reaching our goals can feel strangely hollow. The culprit? Fear. It makes us anxious, or shameful, or turns us into perfectionists. We pretend to be someone else while aiming for a status that's never truly satisfying. There is another way. A way to find our true voice, to win on our own terms. Building that open mindset is at the heart of this mould-breaking book by Dr Pippa Grange, the psychologist who helped transform the England team, taking them all the way to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. In Fear Less, Pippa Grange shows all of us how, by starting to live with less fear, we can find our real passions and deeper fulfilment. Her simple manifesto enables us to replace stress with courage, and connect with the people around us on a far deeper level. This type of success isn't about trophies or beating others, it's about winning at the very deepest level: winning from within. It's time to fear less.
From one of the world’s top performance psychologists—a proven framework for overcoming the primary obstacle to success: fear In more than 20 years helping leaders and athletes reach their true potential, renowned sports psychologist and culture coach Dr. Pippa Grange has found that even the most successful people experience fears of inadequacy. What sets them apart is their ability to pinpoint their fears and “turn down the volume.” In Fear Less, Grange walks you through the process of identifying and facing the fears that manifest in perfectionism, jealousy, self-criticism, and harsh judgment, and replacing those fears with acceptance, purpose, passion, or laughter―to name just a few. And she provides effective fear-management techniques for facing moments of critical pressure, including: Processing – through conscious tactics that bring the mind back to where you want it: the job at hand Distraction – deliberately focusing on other tasks when there’s nothing active to be done about what you actually fear Rationalization – drawing on the actual facts and evidence to talk yourself through the situation Our hidden fears are what make us feel our lives aren’t enough, that prompt us to spend our time worrying about competition, status, and control. Fear is what turns life into a battle, telling us we need to hide our real selves and that we’re not good enough. Fear Less gives you the tools you need to practice your responses to fear in the same way elite athletes train for and perform at a big game―with equally dramatic results. You’ll gain the knowledge and insight you need to change your perspective and move beyond fear to a place of joy, fulfillment, and meaning.

The approach in this book is two-fold: Coaching to help you learn how to make and act on an ethical decision when faced with a dilemma, and an exploration of those deep personal values and beliefs about sport that underpin your actions. This book considers ethics in the context of modern sport and highlights the classic ethical traps and cultural slippery slopes to avoid using case studies and examples.

Trevor Manuel became South Africa's first black finance minister in 1996, a time when the economy threatened to spiral into a debt trap. It took five years before Manuel could present his first 'good news' Budget in Parliament. He described that Budget as a tale of 'irrevocable and powerful transformation', a tale of 'patience and obstinacy ... of determination and hope ... Of choice, not fate.' He could have been telling the tale of his own life. Born into a working-class family on the Cape Flats, his family's story embodied the fate that befell thousands of people classified coloured under apartheid. Homes lived in and lost under the cruel Group Areas Act, a mother who struggled to bring up her children on a garment worker's wages, clashes with gangsters who roamed the streets of the Flats, a truncated education. Manuel stared down fate - and internecine Western Cape politics - to become one of the most prominent anti-apartheid leaders in the internal resistance movement of the 1980s. He confronted apartheid's police and prisons with a boldness that sometimes bordered on recklessness. After Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990, Manuel rose quickly through the ranks of the African National Congress becoming a member of Mandela's first cabinet. When Mandela appointed him minister of finance in 1996, business leaders sneered at his lack of qualifications and experience. When he drove through a tough macroeconomic plan in a post-apartheid South Africa, some of his own constituency turned on him. 'Obstinate and patient', he saw out the worst until the economy began to turn. Under his stewardship, South Africa entered its longest growth period ever. By 2007, he was the world's longest serving minister of finance and, across the world, the most respected African finance minister.
Why do we speak so much of nature today when there is so little of it left? Prompted by this question, this study offers the first full-length exploration of modern British nature writing, from the late eighteenth century to the present. Focusing on non-fictional prose writing, the book supplies new readings of classic texts by Romantic, Victorian and Contemporary authors, situating these within the context of an enduringly popular genre. Nature writing is still widely considered fundamentally celebratory or escapist, yet it is also very much in tune with the conflicts of a natural world under threat. The book's five authors connect these conflicts to the triple historical crisis of the environment; of representation; and of modern dissociated sensibility. This book offers an informed critical approach to modern British nature writing for specialist readers, as well as a valuable guide for general readers concerned by an increasingly diminished natural world.
