This volume exhaustively reviews all aspects of the radiology of blunt chest trauma, as well as the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, and pathology of such trauma. The interest of the book lies above all in the richness of its illustrations, resulting from an image data file spanning more than 10 years. Most radiological patterns described in the literature as well as some new ones are comprehensively discussed and displayed. Moreover, findings of conventional radiology, CT, and sometimes ultrasonography and angiography are displayed simultaneously, allowing comparison between the different imaging modalities. An introductory chapter describes the prevalence, risk factors, and biomechanics of blunt chest trauma. Blunt traumas of each anatomical compartment are then systematically reviewed according to a constant, concise, and structured approach. The book should be a valuable tool both for radiologists and for intensivists and other physicians involved in trauma care.
Ozone is a phytotoxic air pollutant, impairing photosynthesis and reducing plant growth. The predicted increase in tropospheric ozone concentration could lead to an increased vulnerability of forests, mitigating carbon sink strength of vegetation under the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. To improve European risk indices, currently based on atmospheric O3 concentration (i.e. O3 exposure), it is necessary to assess the phytotoxic ozone dose, reflecting the balance between stomatal ozone uptake and detoxification capacity of foliar cells. Advancing knowledge on plant response mechanisms would allow for integrating a sub-model into global ozone impact prediction models towards consolidating process-based indices for risk assessment. Crucial parameters are (i) stomatal characteristics, (ii) constitutive detoxification potential, (iii) capacity for antioxidant regeneration and (iv) cellular redox power. The combination of ozone with other impacting factors (drought, high temperature and CO2) will be discussed in view of the challenge of scaling tree-level ozone responses to the forest ecosystem level under conditions of climate change.

This is an area which is assuming ever greater importance for radiologists as its mucosal surface continues to elude the endos copist. Moreover, it is an aspect of radiology which calls for the greatest technical and interpretative skill. It is a great pleasure to welcome the English language version of this beautiful work on Radiology of the Small Intestine. English speaking physicians are frequently not as familiar with the large body of work published in French as they should be. Tant pis ! It is well known that solid carbons can be found in various guises with different forms of bulk phases (graphites, diamonds and carbynes) as well as more molecular forms (fullerenes,nanotubes and graphenes) resulting from recent discoveries. The cause of this rich polymorphism is analyzed in the first part of this book (chapters 1-5) with the propensity of carbon atoms for forming different types of homopolar chemical bonds associated with variable coordination numbers. Precursor organic molecules and parent compounds are also described to establish specific links with this rich polymorphism. Then in a second part (chapters 6-10) a comparative review of the main classes of bulk physical properties is presented. This approach emphasizes in particular the electronic behavior of (pi) polyaromatic systems organized in plane and curved atomic sheets. Finally in a third part (chapters 11-15) the surface and interface characteristics are introduced together with the texture and morphology of these multiscale carbon materials. An overview of the main field of applications is related showing the large use and interest for these solids.
Epithelial phenotype is a dynamic stage of differentiation that can be modulated during several physiological or pathological events. The rapid conversion to a mesenchymal-like phenotype is called an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The Rise and Fall of Epithelial Phenotype is the first book to comprehensively introduce the concept of EMT. The first part of this volume describes main examples and models and explains their physiological relevance. These examples include hydra morphogenesis, gastrulation in mouse, drosophila and sea urchin, as well as neural crest cell migration and heart morphogenesis in vertebrates. Part two reviews in detail, specific EMT molecular pathways covering extracellular induction, transduction and transcription response and modulation of cell-cell adhesion structures. It emphasizes new specific pathways with potential medical applications. EMTs can also be linked to pathological events such as wound healing and cancer progression, as detailed in this section of the book.
