A variety of formalisms have been developed to address such aspects of handling imperfect knowledge as uncertainty, vagueness, imprecision, incompleteness, and partial inconsistency. Some of the most familiar approaches in this research field are nonmonotonic logics, modal logics, probability theory (Bayesian and non-Bayesian), belief function theory, and fuzzy sets and possibility theory. ESPRIT Basic Research Action 3085, entitled Defeasible Reasoning and Uncertainty Management Systems (DRUMS), aims to contribute to the elucidation of similarities and differences between these formalisms. It consists of 11 active European research groups. The European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Uncertainty (ESQAU) provides a forum for these groups to meet and discuss their scientific results. This volume contains 42 contributions accepted for the ESQAU meeting held in October 1991 in Marseille, together with 12 articles presenting the activities of the DRUMS groups and two invited presentations.

This work is devoted to the theory and approximation of nonlinear hyper bolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors, and we shall make frequent references to Godlewski and Raviart (1991) (hereafter noted G. R. ), though the present volume can be read independently. This earlier publication, apart from a first chap ter, especially covered the scalar case. Thus, we shall detail here neither the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws nor their approximation in the one-dimensional case by finite-difference con servative schemes, both of which were treated in G. R. , but we shall mostly consider systems. The theory for systems is in fact much more difficult and not at all completed. This explains why we shall mainly concentrate on some theoretical aspects that are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem, with occasional insights into more sophisticated problems. The present book is divided into six chapters, including an introductory chapter. For the reader's convenience, we shall resume in this Introduction the notions that are necessary for a self-sufficient understanding of this book -the main definitions of hyperbolicity, weak solutions, and entropy present the practical examples that will be thoroughly developed in the following chapters, and recall the main results concerning the scalar case.

This book explores the social, political, and historical forces that mediate language ideology and practices in post-colonial education and how such ideology and practices influence students’ academic achievement. Jean-Pierre provides empirical evidence that a relationship exists between language practices and school underperformance. He takes Haiti as the focus of study, finding that students and teachers experience difficulty constructing knowledge in a setting in which the language they speak at home (Creole) differs from the language of instruction (French). The research is based on ethnographic data collected in classrooms in both private and public school settings in addition to different sectors of the society (e.g. state and private institutions).
