Magda Trocmé (1901-1996) was the Italian-born wife of Reverend André Trocmé (1901-1971), a French pastor deeply involved in the social gospel movement that saw Christianity embedded in progressive political struggles. Together, they worked heroically, and under dangerous circumstances, to prevent the deportation of thousands of people to Nazi concentration camps. Living in the small, mainly Protestant town of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon on the Plateau Vivarais-Lignon in southern France, Magda and André Trocmé inspired a network of resistance to the Vichy regime's deportation of Jews and would eventually be honoured as "Righteous Among the Nations" by the state of Israel. This book includes a mosaic of sermons, letters, published articles, diaries, and speeches from the war years, but also before and after, extending from the 1920s to the 1970s. The couple travelled widely after the war, meeting with the likes of Martin Luther King Jr, Indira Gandhi, Elie Wiesel, and Rosa Parks, and played an active role in movements for anti-colonialism, nuclear disarmament, and peace. Appearing for the first time in English, these texts have been selected by Pierre Boismorand, who offers bridging commentary and explanatory notes throughout. Through a diverse range of public, private, and autobiographical documents, the reader enters the heart of this remarkable couple's motivations, hopes, and also their unfulfilled dreams. André and Magda Trocmé lived through a troubled time with conviction, courage, and dignity - their writings provide a powerful example of an unyielding dedication to justice and peaceful resistance.

A Happy and Informative Present: at the new Université de Sherbrooke, Pierre had developed a four-month teaching program for clinical nurses prior to their departure to the Canadian Far North where they would be in charge of a Nursing Station. In 1973, a group of them gave me as a parting gift the French translation of "The Scalpel and the Sword" by Ted Allen and Sydney Gordon (Toronto, 1952); the French version was by Jean Pare, 'Docteur Bethune' (Montreal, 1973). As new Canadians, we thought it odd that the French version should take 20 years to appear on the scene. We had been in Canada for 15 years. In 1975, Pierre's career led him to 1'hospitaldu Sacré-Coeur where Dr. Bethune worked for over three years (1933-1936), his first experience in a non-English environment before going to Spain and China where he died in 1939. He became my last model. During the last seven years of his life Dr Bethune was able to adapt in a masterful way to three completely different important complex situations on three different continents (January 1936 November 1939). On the social side, Joan became secretary of the Montreal-based Norman Bethune Foundation. A year later, Pierre became its fourth Chairman, eventually becoming responsible for a professional exchange program between Montreal and China, working most of the time at the Bethune International Peace Hospital in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province (19891994). Joan was responsible for a TESL program, Pierre for a medical teaching program. Note: Joan is the note-taker, keeping a daily agenda since 1960 without interruptions! Pierre took lots of pictures and accumulated written stuff all classified and in sequence, in about fifty tightly packed binders.

In occupied France, the Nazis pursued aggressive, tightly orchestrated measures designed to monopolize the French market and foster agitation against Americans, Jews, Communists, and others. The documentary film was one instrument of propaganda employed by the Nazi occupiers, as well as the Vichy government and collaborationists. Nearly two hundred of those documentaries have been restored by the French Film Archives. Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit’s Propaganda Documentaries in France: 1940–1944 is the first volume specifically devoted to nonfiction propaganda films distributed in France during the “dark years” of the German Occupation. This book provides a concise overview of Vichy and German film policies, including the purchase of an extensive network of movie houses, many of which were expropriated from Jewish owners. In addition, popular prewar American and French feature films were banned, while theaters were flooded with propagandist titles. Bertin-Maghit also illustrates how ideological priorities and political negotiations played out in both topical documentaries and weekly newsreels, juxtaposing Vichy’s integrationist propaganda with German-sponsored documentaries of agitation and exclusion. While documentaries are the primary focus of this work, the author also addresses other forms of propaganda, such as newsreels and posters. This volume is the outcome of a CIRM Workshop on Renormalization and Galois Theories held in Luminy, France, in March 2006. The subject of this workshop was the interaction and relationship between four currently very active areas: renormalization in quantum field theory (QFT), differential Galois theory, noncommutative geometry, motives and Galois theory. The last decade has seen a burst of new techniques to cope with the various mathematical questions involved in QFT, with notably the development of a Hopf-algebraic approach and insights into the classes of numbers and special functions that systematically appear in the calculations of perturbative QFT (pQFT). The analysis of the ambiguities of resummation of the divergent series of pQFT, an old problem, has been renewed, using recent results on Gevrey asymptotics, generalized Borel summation, Stokes phenomenon and resurgent functions. The purpose of the present book is to highlight, in the context of renormalization, the convergence of these various themes, orchestrated by diverse Galois theories. It contains three lecture courses together with five research articles and will be useful to both researchers and graduate students in mathematics and physics.
