Between 2010 and 2025, most of the countries of Latin America will commemorate two centuries of independence, and Latin Americans have much to celebrate at this milestone. Most countries have enjoyed periods of sustained growth, while inequality is showing modest declines and the middle class is expanding. Dictatorships have been left behind, and all major political actors seem to have accepted the democratic process and the rule of law. Latin Americans have entered the digital world, routinely using the Internet and social media. These new realities in Latin America call for a new introduction to its history and culture, which Latin America at 200 amply provides. Taking a reader-friendly approach that focuses on the big picture and uses concrete examples, Phillip Berryman highlights what Latin Americans are doing to overcome extreme poverty and underdevelopment. He starts with issues facing cities, then considers agriculture and farming, business, the environment, inequality and class, race and ethnicity, gender, and religion. His survey of Latin American history leads into current issues in economics, politics and governance, and globalization. Berryman also acknowledges the ongoing challenges facing Latin Americans, especially crime and corruption, and the efforts being made to combat them. From midnight to 0200 are the hours that the streets are usually still moving with the bright headlights, from mostly cars flashing in the one direction and the red taillights flashing about in the other direction, giving the darkness an eerie and sometimes grotesque mingling of flashing multi-colored neon lights of businesses with the haze of streetlights. The excitement of the night to come is highlighted with the manmade Aurora Borealis of dancing hews. At 2 a.m. the bars close down, therefore, the restaurant’s alcohol drinks stop flowing. Now the streets are less filled with the kind of traffic that started that morning. Most of the business lights are dimmer, but not all. Mixed with a small amount of employees returning home from their late night shift are the cars returning from the bars. When graveyard begins and when the day darkens, many peace officers fall or are killed in the course of their job to protect the public while you are in your home safe. The hunt begins for criminals and we find them with handguns, knives, and all kinds of weapons. This is the time the drug addict’s dope is taken. This book describes the danger for the officer when he must solve the problems before he leaves to handle another call. The reader will understand when darkness arrives; the danger increases. It is a lonely shift as the deputy slowly drives his patrol until while looking for criminal activity in his area. Now the cat and mouse game begins as he is fighting fatigue and trying to stay alert for the next call. There are people out there who want to kill you or disable you rather than face arrest. You call for backup for help when you are arresting a dangerous person like a cold-blooded killer and especially when you are completing graveyard shift. As you slide under your warm blankets that cop is working the graveyard shift. Sleep peacefully and remember the road warriors are chasing crooks out in the neighborhood. And the war on crime begins again in the dark of night.

Up until the late 1960s the story of Australian literary magazines was one of continuing struggle against the odds, and of the efforts of individuals, such as Clem Christesen, Stephen Murray-Smith, and Max Harris. During that time, the magazines played the role of 'enfant terrible', creating a space where unpopular opinions and writers were allowed a voice. The magazines have very often been ahead of their time and some of the agendas they have pursued have become 'central' to representations, where once they were marginal. Broadly, 'little' magazines have often been more influential than their small circulations would first indicate, and the author's argument is that they have played a valuable role in the promotion of Australian literature.

The book "The Right Wing: the Good, the Bad, and the Crazy" discusses the political right in the United States from Prohibition through recent speculation concerning the presidential campaign of 2016. A chapter is devoted to each U.S. President from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to George W. Bush. Many references are contained in the book concerning right wing personalities such as Robert Welch, Joe McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, Rush Limbaugh, Darrel Issa and others. Right wing organizations such as the John Birch Society, Fox News, and the Tea Party are analyzed. The Afterword section contains the author's solution to issues such as gun control, the U.S. Debt, the need for additional federal revenues, and the lack of medium and large U.S. corporations' tax support of the U.S. government. Controversial issues such as sex education, immigration, and the present large gap between wealthy and middle class income are discussed in the book. The influence of the religious right in politics is analyzed. The author, Charles Rider, analyzes some of the above issues from an attorney's perspective. The book contains facts not generally known by readers such as Senator McCarthy, the communist witch hunter, subpoenaed many witnesses and forced them to testify in front of the Senate Permanent Sub Committee on Investigations. None of the witnesses ever went to jail or prison for communist activity. McCarthy's committee records of witnesses' testimony and background disappeared from the FBI files and the National Archives. During the Afghan War, Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld created a monetary reward program for information as to names of terrorists. Leaflets were distributed that the U.S. Government would pay up to $15,000 for names of terrorists. People turned in their enemies and sometimes goat herders and store clerks ended up in Guantanamo.

Promises of justice and equality made in the U.S. Constitution, numerous Amendments, and decisions of the Supreme Court are hallmarks of American civil rights. Yet the realities of inequality remain facts of modern life for too many Native Americans, African Americans, and Latino Americans, even though state-mandated racial segregation has been outlawed for years. Women still face a variety of forms of discrimination—some subtle and others more overt. There remain many laws that treat people differently because of sexual orientation. People with disabilities are supposed to be protected by a variety of statutes, but many of these policies remain unfulfilled promises. These are just some of the many challenges of civil rights that persist in a nation that proudly points to the words above the entrance to the U.S. Supreme Court that read "Equal Justice Under Law." This text is for current and future public service professionals —whether they are in government agencies, in nonprofit organizations that provide social services for government, or contractors who operate as state actors—who increasingly serve diverse communities with a range of complex challenges, while working and managing within organizations that, fortunately, are themselves more diverse than ever before. For those who work and serve in such settings, civil rights is not an abstract academic study, but a critically important and very practical fact of daily life. This book may also be used on civil rights law, policy, and public administration courses, and each chapter ends with a section on ‘Issues for Policy and Practice’ to guide an examination of key public policy hurdles in the fight for civil rights as well as the implications for public service practice. If you are looking for real constructive criticism, this book is for you. Phillip Torsrud has also written Preemptive Strike which is a novel on human trafficking, and Essays of a Penitentiary Philosopher which explores the structural failings of America's Justice system. While many of the topics addressed in America Unraveled are complicated, the simple and direct style of writing makes the reading not only easy, but enjoyable.
