The first complete English translation of Lacoue-Labarthes most innovative and original work, exploring the very origins of experience, language, desire, and mortality. Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe (19402007) is widely acknowledged in his native France and in the English-speaking world as one of the most important philosophers of his generation and an exceptionally rigorous reader of Heidegger, Hölderlin, Benjamin, Blanchot, and Celan. An astute thinker of the political and a far-reaching and decisive analyst of the place of theater and music in Western metaphysics, Lacoue-Labarthe also had another, clandestine passion for something called poetry or literature, though he would remain deeply suspicious of these words. Phrase is his most original work, a sequence of texts both autobiographical and philosophical, written in lucid prose and in free verse over a period of more than twenty-five years. VY Mudimbe: Undisciplined Africanism is the first English-language monograph dedicated to the work of Valentin Yves Mudimbe. This book charts the intellectual history of the seminal Congolese philosopher, epistemologist, and philologist from the late 1960s to the present day, exploring his major essays and novels. Pierre-Philippe Fraiture highlights Mudimbe’s trajectory through major debates on African nationalism, Panafricanism, neo-colonialism, negritude, pedagogy, Christianisation, decolonisation, anthropology, postcolonial representations, and a variety of other subjects, using these as contexts for close readings of many of Mudimbe’s texts, both influential and lesser-known. Published posthumously, Ending and Unending Agony is Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe’s only book entirely devoted to the French writer and essayist Maurice Blanchot (1907–2003). The place of Blanchot in Lacoue-Labarthe’s thought was both discreet and profound, involving difficult, agonizing questions about the status of literature, with vast political and ethical stakes. Together with Plato, Holderlin, Nietzsche, Benjamin, and Heidegger, Blanchot represents a decisive crossroads for Lacoue-Labarthe’s central concerns. An award-winning biography of one of the greats. Simon Leys is the pen-name of Pierre Ryckmans, who was born in Belgium and settled in Australia in 1970. He taught Chinese literature at the Australian National University and was Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney from 1987 to 1993. He died in 2014. Writing in three languages – French, Chinese and English – he played an important political role in revealing the true nature of the Cultural Revolution. His writing on China and on varied literary and cultural topics appeared regularly in the New York Review of Books, Le Monde, Le Figaro Littéraire, Quadrant and the Monthly, and his books include The Hall of Uselessness, The Death of Napoleon, Other People’s Thoughts and The Wreck of the Batavia & Prosper. In 1996 he delivered the ABC’s Boyer Lectures. His many awards include the Prix Renaudot, the Prix Mondial Cino Del Duca, the Prix Guizot and the Christina Stead Prize for fiction. This substantial biography – recently published by Gallimard in France to wide acclaim and winning an award from the Académie Francaise – draws on extensive correspondence with Ryckmans, as well as his unpublished writings. It has been translated by an internationally renowned French translator Julie Rose (based in Sydney).
Three renowned philosophers discuss the work of Martin Heidegger, and the moral quandary of engaging with a major philosopher who was also a Nazi. In these rural areas, given the fertility rate, the population will double by 2050; agricultural practices must preserve the environment to maintain its productive capacity, for current and future generations; the necessity to rapidly adapt farming practices to cope with climate changes. Regarding these three challenges, Inter Aide has developed an innovative approach that consists in combining fodder production and soil and water conservation. The basic idea is simple: to plant fodder on anti-erosive structures and in unproductive places on the farm.

Cinema has been long associated with France, dating back to 1895, when Louis and Auguste Lumi_re screened their works, the first public viewing of films anywhere. Early silent pioneers Georges MZli_s, Alice Guy BlachZ and others followed in the footsteps of the Lumi_re brothers and the tradition of important filmmaking continued throughout the 20th century and beyond. In Encyclopedia of French Film Directors, Philippe Rège identifies every French director who has made at least one feature film since 1895. From undisputed masters to obscure one-timers, nearly 3,000 directors are cited here, including at least 200 filmmakers not mentioned in similar books published in France. Le Roman de la Manekine marks the beginning of its author's literary career. Philippe de Remi, on whom much attention has focused in the last two decades, was an unusual figure: a 13th-century land-holder and professional administrator who loved literature and who produced a large and varied corpus of narrative and lyric. Here is presented for the first time since 1884 a scholarly edition of Philippe's first romance, a tale centering on a heroine of great courage and integrity who passes through many trials without losing hope. The text is accompanied by a line-by-line English version, and by extensive commentary touching on the author, his milieu, and the literary context and major themes of the romance. It is presented here in a scholarly edition accompanied by a facing translation into English and an ample commentary. In addition, this volume contains the rest of Philippe's works as preserved in the unique manuscript, Paris BNF fr. 1588: eight substantial verse compositions offering much variety in length, tone, and content. Two other bodies of work are also included: eleven songs in BNF fr. 24006 (of which ten are surely by him) and the series of 'Resveries' in BNF fr. 837 now generally ascribed to him. The volume, a companion to Le Roman de la Manekine (1999), rounds out the complete works of this 13th-century land-holder, professional administrator, family man, gifted amateur writer, and lover of literature. It includes the first English translation of Jehan et Blonde and is the only edition of Philippe's works to contain the songs and the 'Resveries.' It should be of interest to specialists in medieval French romance and lyric verse, and also to general readers of medieval narrative who find English translations useful.

This is a pioneering attempt to rearticulate the relationship between music and the problem of mimesis, of presentation and re-presentation. Four "scenes" compose this book, all four of them responses to Wagner: two by French poets (Baudelaire and Mallarme), two by German philosophers (Heidegger and Adorno). It is difficult today to realize how profoundly Wagner affected the cultural and ideological sensibilities of the nineteenth century. Wagnerism rapidly spread throughout Europe, partly because of Wagner's propagandizing talent and the zeal of his adherents. But the main reason for his ascendance was the sudden appearance of what the century had desperately tried to produce since the beginnings of Romanticism - a work of art on the scale of great Greek and Christian art. Finally, here it was, the secret of what Hegel called the "religion of art" rediscovered. The first two scenes of the book, contemporary with the European triumph of Wagnerism, inscribe themselves in a historical sequence that is punctuated by the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, in which the universal unbridling of nations and classes is prefigured. The second two register certain effects of Wagnerism that are not just ideological but make themselves felt in a new political configuration that solidifies a confusion between the "national" and the "social." Art and politics are both at play here, but as neither a politics of art nor, even less, an art of politics. Instead, what is at stake, more gravely, is the aestheticization, the figuration, of the political. The four scenes frame and clarify the "true scene" that sanctioned Nietzsche's rupture with Wagner, the major philosophical event that Heidegger, in1938, said it was imperative to understand as a turning point in Western history.

The Literary Absolute is the first authoritative study of the emergence of the modern concept of literature in German romanticism. The authors trace this concept from the philosophical crisis bequeathed by Kant to his successors, to its development by the central figures of the Athenaeum group: the Schlegel brothers, Schelling, and Novalis. This study situates the Jena romantics' "fragmentary" model of literature—a model of literature as the production of its own theory—in relation to the development of a post-Kantian conception of philosophy as the total and reflective auto-production of the thinking subject. Analyzing key texts of the period, the authors articulate the characteristics of romantic thought and at the same time show historical and systematic connections with modern literary theory. Thus, The Literary Absolute renews contemporary scholarship, showing the romantic origins of some of the leading issues in current critical theory.
