One family of viruses is responsible for the infection of many species of vertebrates. These are the retroviruses whose genomic RNA is used to support genetic information and ensures many essential functions that are required for the formation of an infectious viral particle. These functions depend on structures formed by the folding of the genomic RNA. Shells and plates have been widely studied by engineers during the last fifty years. As a matter of fact an important number of papers have been based on analytical calculations. More recently numerical simulations have been extensively used. for instance for large displacement analysis. for shape optimization or even -in linear analysis -for composite material understanding. But all these works lie on a choice of a finite element scheme which contains usually three kinds of approximations: 1. a plate or shell mndel including smnll parameters associated to the thickness, 2. an approximntion of the geometry (the medium sUrface of a shell and its boundary), 3. afinite element scheme in order to solve the mndel chosen. VI Obviously the conclusions that we can draw are very much depending on the quality of the three previous choices. For instance composite laminated plates with damage like a delamination is still an open problem even if interesting papers have already been published and based on numerical simulation using existing fmite element and even plate models. • In our opinion the understanding of plate modelling is still an area of interest. Furthermore the links between the various models have to be handled with care. The certainly best understood model is the Kirchhoff-Love model which was completely justified by P. O. Ciarlet and Ph. Destuynder in linear analysis using asymptotic method. But the conclusion is not so clear as far as large displacements are to be taken into account.
This dictionary refers to current and obsolete Welsh. First of all, this dictionary refers to a former language, older than Sanskrit or old Persian: this is the former language, originating from a very former religion, born in northwest India around ten thousand years ago. I have called this language: the Vedic language, because its vocabulary and its mechanisms can be observed in the Rg-Veda. Briefly: this language is based on the division of the Universe in two parts: day and night. Personally, I have studied this language mainly in Sanskrit, this is a sort of primitive sanskrit, nevertheless I have found help in the Gaulish and Welsh languages. Through this book, I show many origins and etymologies in French, old French, English, old English, German, Basque, and many other languages that I know fairly well. Sometimes, unfortunately rarely, I refer to Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or African languages. The analysis of these languages, much closer than one says until now, will be another great phase for a better knowledge of the past.

How meaning works—from monkey calls to human language, from spoken language to sign language, from gestures to music—and how meaning is connected to truth. We communicate through language, connecting what we mean to the words we say. But humans convey meaning in other ways as well, with facial expressions, hand gestures, and other methods. Animals, too, can get their meanings across without words. In What It All Means, linguist Philippe Schlenker explains how meaning works, from monkey calls to human language, from spoken language to sign language, from gestures to music. He shows that these extraordinarily diverse types of meaning can be studied and compared within a unified approach—one in which the notion of truth plays a central role. “It’s just semantics” is often said dismissively. But Schlenker shows that semantics—the study of meaning—is an unsung success of modern linguistics, a way to investigate some of the deepest questions about human nature using tools from the empirical and formal sciences. Drawing on fifty years of research in formal semantics, Schlenker traces how meaning comes to life. Debates about whether to maintain or abolish slavery revolved around two key values: the morality of enslaving other human beings and the economic benefits and costs of slavery as compared to free labor. Various and conflicting arguments were presented by abolitionists, colonists, and administrators in slave-holding societies, all of whom used calculations about the relative cost and productivity of slavery to defend their own point of view in an impassioned debate. In Calculation and Morality, Caroline Oudin-Bastide and Philippe Steiner consider how economic calculations, estimations, and arguments informed the long debate over French slavery between 1771 and 1848. They show how calculation was introduced into moral debate and became a critical social object in regard both to its consistency and its manifest effects. To do so they trace a process in which phenomena were classified into groups, becoming a category, and then how metrics and calculations were used to analyze the possible effects of emancipating slaves in French colonies. Abolitionists sought to demonstrate that it was in the interest of slaveowners and/or the entire nation to employ free labour in the colonies, and to show the irrationality of the colonial and metropolitan defenders of servitude; their aim was to enlighten various parties as to their real interest, and how that real interest coincided with justice. In turn, colonists accused those opposed to slavery of being blinded by their own philanthropic principles and insisted on the rationality of the slave system as the only means of meeting the interests of everyone, including slaves, at least in the short and medium term. Oudin-Bastide and Steiner closely examine the positions and reasoning of such influential French thinkers as Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours, Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Antoine Nicolas de Condorcet, Simonde de Sismondi, Jean Baptiste Say, and Alexis de Tocqueville. In doing so they shed light on the interaction of moral precepts and econonomic calculations in a trenchant study in the history of ideas.

Most people believe that consumer Christmas is a recent creation. However, it was more than a century ago that the consumer spirit of Christmas blossomed. Few societies illustrate this spectacular development better than French Canada. Here, the new spirit of Christmas that came to prevail imposed itself through two battles. On the one hand, New Year’s Day, which had been the true focal point of the winter season in French Canadians’ culture, was supplanted by the Nativity. On the other hand, Baby Jesus was replaced by Santa Claus. In seeking to understand how Christian celebrations became at the turn of the twentieth century the commercial event par excellence for French Canadians, this book invites the reader to question the genesis of seemingly immemorial traditions.

The name "Nadar" was on everyone's lips. Today, it is Nadar's photography that is remembered. His sitters, who were often his friends, included the great men and women of his time: Dumas, Rossini, Baudelaire, Sarah Bernhardt, Daumier, Berlioz, George Sand, Delacroix. Nadar's legendary name has been attached not only to his original photographs but to reprints, copies and a great deal of studio work. For that reason, this volume exactingly reproduces some one hundred photographs from the years 1854-60, the period of his earliest and finest photography, allowing viewers to become familiar with the subtle light and balanced, velvety tones that distinguish Nadar's original work.
