Economists have written about economic expansion and contraction and/or the primary example of it, the Great Depression, as it has been an area of economic thought that seems to evade answers while tempting explanation. In this book the author offers both a descriptive and a quantitative approach which offers new perspectives. Similarities are found between the pre-depression years, and our current economic malaise. The presence of a housing boom and bust in both situations is attributed to individuals reaching home buying age. As this peak of home buying reaches its crest and ages beyond that time of life, a rapid decline in population occurs. This decline is followed by a housing crisis as the number of home buying individuals declines. Foreclosures follow as unemployment increases and incomes decline. Banks suffer as the amount of checkbook money (part of M2) declines. Government may or may not respond with an increase of central bank money (part of M2). Reserves decline if there is a decline of checkbook money or central bank money. Lack of reserves makes it such that banks cannot meet obligations to their customers and further tighten credit. Depositors lose faith in the banking system. The impact of this scenario becomes widespread. The question raised and addressed by Martin Feldstein (ed.) and contributing authors in The Risk of Economic Crisis (1991), should be answered with a resounding yes. We are in a time where the number of live births in the U.S. peaked in 1960 and was followed by a major decline in live births from 1961-1975. Some mistakenly term 1933-1960 as a baby boom. This was an increase in live births that began in 1933-1934. As this increase and decrease of live births passes through the U.S. economic system, it carries with it economic consequences. Now, we are living in a time that is an accident of our history.
The author worked and vacationed in Liberia and West Africa from 1962-1964. The author kept a diary of most of his stay. This book reveals the day-to-day life of a Peace Corps volunteer as well as the experiences of students and villiagers. The experiences are both diverse and unexpected. Reading these diaries results in a fair perspective on the volunteer's life and times. Furthermore, it provides many insights into Liberia, Americo-Liberian culture, life up-country, or life in the interior. This book carries the reader from experience to experience. You'll have a hard time setting it down."--Back cover.
This book is about observation and process. It addresses what we observe, how we observe, and the value and consequences of how we observe. It also explores the terms of value and meaning, the attribution of value and meaning to observation, and the process of existence. Second, this essay examines time and change and how we observe both. It discusses the concept of living in the now or living in the moment and examines their relevance to a life well lived. Third, the essay proposes a framework for observing reality. The framework suggests that not only can we observe life from a global perspective but that we have the capacity to experience reality at multiple levels. This is where the empiricist confronts the level-of-analysis issue. Fourth, it explores our human and assisted levels of observation. This represents a broad spectrum of innate as well as chemical, physical, and electronic devices that allow us to explore our universe, our relationships, and our personal lives. Fifth, the essay investigates various methods that humans employed to rationalize their understandings of reality. Included in the discussion is the relevance of these practices to an individuals personal life. In addition, the essay discusses observing the world as it is and the difficulties inherent in maintaining objectivity while observing precisely. One of the conditions of our current environment is the loss of pragmatism. Ideologies now dominate our political discourse, be it local, statewide, national, or international. In such an environment, compromise becomes unlikely. There is a black and a white with no room for gray. The essay discusses the eventual, and alternative, consequences of this.

The mathematical basis, the data used, and the results are all presented in graphic form. The estimates are compared to National Bureau of Economic Research Dating Committee data. Projections using estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Census are used to further project personal income, personal income annual change, and disposable personal income to 2030.
