Philip H. J. Davies is one of a growing number of British academic scholars of intelligence, but the only academic to approach the subject in terms of political science rather than history. He wrote his PhD at the University of Reading on the topic 'Organisational Development of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service 1909-1979', and has published extensively on intelligence and defence issues. After completing his PhD he taught for a year and a half on the University of London external degree programme in Singapore before returning to the UK to lecture at the University of Reading for two years. He was formerly Associate Professor of International and Security Studies at the University of Malaya in Malaysia where he not only conducted his research but provided a range of training and consultancy services to the Malaysian intelligence and foreign services. In August 1914, Kitchener's 'Contemptible Little Army' was highly professional but small, equipped with only what they could carry – and they were facing a force of continental proportions, heavily armed and well supplied. The task of equipping the British Army was truly Herculean. Many able men had volunteered to fight in the trenches, and others would soon be called up, so this vital work was to be undertaken by the ordinary men and women left behind. In time, the government recognised the need for skills of engineering and logistics, and many of those who had survived the onslaught were brought back home to work. Ordnance is the story of these men and women. It traces the provision of equipment and armaments from raw material through manufacture to the supply routes that gave the British Army all the material it needed to win the war. It is a story of some failures, but also of ingenuity and effort on the part of ordinary people to overcome shortfalls in organisation. It is a story of some lessons learnt, but of others that weren't, and these would have long-lasting repercussions.

It deals with the concepts of sound isolation, examines some of the principal processes at work, and provides drawings and descriptions of actual rooms and techniques. The book describes how the isolation requirements have their effect on the internal acoustics of the rooms, and how the room treatments must be conceived with such interactions taken into consideration. Starting from the initial concepts, to the measurements of the finished items, Recording Spaces discusses many different types of room, from vocal `booths' to orchestral rooms. There are many stories of how actual `classical' musical performances, from rock to orchestral, have been inspired, or strongly influenced, by the acoustics of their recording spaces. Philip Newell lives in Spain and travels extensively - he is currently designing a concert hall in the Ukraine. Philip began his career working with classic groups such as The Who, whilst at the same time recording brass bands, Welsh male voice choirs, Scottish pipes, church and fairground organs, musicals, and classical recitals. Philip has close links with the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at Southampton University and has written articles for the major audio magazines.
