Author Philip Van Munching and couples therapist Dr. Bernie Katz team up to show readers: how even our earliest childhood experiences dictate our relationship choices; how the unconscious elements of our personalities both attract and repel the people we become romantically involved with (often at the same time!); why breaking up is hard to do; and how to use this insight to fix their relationships.--From publisher description.
The bonds in molecules vibrate too, making endless symphonies. Each molecule is a little angel's harp." Thus writes the young Alan to Beth. Beth whom he has never met, but who lived in the house next door fifteen years earlier. Alan and Melanie growing up in an Australian suburb in the 1960s/70s; Beth growing up in the same suburb in the 1940s/50s. What strange orchestration weaves their lives together? And how will the final chord be resolved? Exploring themes from spirituality, to sexual awakening, to psychosis, the story gently leads the reader from the circumscribed world of the child, through the anguished teenage years, to the world of the adult, when everything should begin to make sense. Shouldn't it? Follow Alan Carter as he struggles to discern the meaning and patterns of his life, while the forces that compose the music of the universe roll on relentlessly.
Between 1800 and 1920, an extraordinary cast of bold innovators and entrepreneurs—individuals such as Cyrus McCormick, Brigham Young, Henry Wells and James Fargo, Fred Harvey, Levi Strauss, Adolph Coors, J. P. Morgan, and Buffalo Bill Cody—helped lay the groundwork for what we now call the American West. They were people of imagination and courage, adept at maneuvering the rapids of change, alert to opportunity, persistent in their missions. They had big ideas they were not afraid to test. They stitched the country together with the first transcontinental railroad, invented the Model A and built the roads it traveled on, raised cities and supplied them with water and electricity, established banks for immigrant populations, entertained the world with film and showmanship, and created a new form of western hospitality for early travelers. Not all were ideal role models. Most, however, once they had made their fortunes, shared them in the form of cultural institutions, charities, libraries, parks, and other amenities that continue to enrich lives in the West today. Out Where the West Begins profiles some fifty of these individuals, tracing the arcs of their lives, exploring their backgrounds and motivations, identifying their contributions, and analyzing the strategies they developed to succeed in their chosen fields.

Dr. Philip Lehman has no theological training so Philables are 'Layman stories' (pun intended) not sermons. Philables are intended to help believers see 'every act is an act of worship'. To see everyday events as teachable moments...little vignettes that can lead to moments of praise, reflection and encouragement. For several years Phil's morning devotions have frequently included writing short stories. Stories that are based on the day's scripture passage or some recent event. This allows him to bring Biblical values and lessons into his daily life in short, relatable stories. Several friends asked him to share these daily stories with them and have since encouraged him to have them published as they have shared them with their family and friends. Each weekday he also emails the new Philable to his niece, a missionary in Thailand and translates them into Spanish and emails them to a pastor in Peru. Other than scripture, ideas for these stories come to Phil in sermons, daily interactions with others, and comments and current events. Philables avoid politics and cultural concerns and conclude with a brief synopsis of a lesson to contemplate or scripture to bring the story into daily life. For example the first Philable ends: "Moriah returned from her mission trip in Australia with a serious fungal foot infection. Her friends and family saw dirty, smelly feet, her doctor saw infected feet, God saw beautiful feet." 'As it is written 'How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things' (Romans 10:15). Go get your feet dirty...get off the sidewalk. Be in the world but apart from the world. Don't worry about what man sees. Follow Jesus' example.

When marriage goes well, there is perhaps no greater human happiness; but when it goes poorly, there may be no greater misery!" So say these two popular authors & counselors, husband & wife. Having known "both the joyful & the painful sides of married life," Philip & Lisa offer Christian couples three major insights for turning marriage into a lifelong positive adventure. Faith - that God's love is always there, ready to bless a marriage Commitment - from both partners to make their marriage their most important human relationship Communication Skills - to prevent misunderstandings, hurt feelings, & futile conflicts The authors insist that a lasting, loving marriage must rest on all three areas & that strength in one cannot compensate for weakness in another. So, they provide helpful advice for building up each of the three. The opening section on "Healthy Communication" covers skills in listening, sharing feelings, asking for wants & needs, & negotiating change. Next, in "Understanding Our Personalities," the authors deal with personality types & how they relate, especially the different ways different personalities perceive reality & make decisions. The third section, "Sacramentality," offers a spiritual base for building intimacy - sexual, emotional, & intellectual. The final section brings all three areas together to show how to cope with the most common sources of wear & tear on a marriage: money, children, & "who does what, when." Perhaps the most welcome aspect of the book will be its format - it's designed so couples can read it together, then pause, discuss, & pray together. The result is a rare blend of faith-building spiritual counsel & problem-solving practical advice.
