Combining personal documents with a close reading of scientific texts, Todes fundamentally reinterprets Pavlov's famous research on conditional reflexes. Contrary to legend, Pavlov was not a behaviorist (a misimpression captured in the false iconic image of his "training a dog to salivate to the sound of a bell"); rather, he sought to explain not simply external behaviors, but the emotional and intellectual life of animals and humans. This iconic "objectivist" was actually a profoundly anthropomorphic thinker whose science was suffused with his own experiences, values, and subjective interpretations. Nevertheless, sufficient key recent references have also been included so that the existing ‘state of the art is delineated.

Hierfür werden zunächst Konzeptualisierung und Operationalsierung der betreffenden Konstrukte auf Basis einer fundierten Literaturanalyse die vorgenom-men. Im Weiteren wird der Einfluss des Country-of-Origin wie auch des Coun-try Image auf das Konsumentenverhalten untersucht. Dazu wird neben konventionellen Ansätzen wie Kategorisierung und Ethnozentrismus eine neue, ergänzende Sicht-weise beleuchtet. Insofern lässt sich abschließend die Relevanz des Länderimage für internationale Marketingstrategien aufzeigen, da es sich weiterhin um ein breit diskutiertes Konstrukt handelt, welches künftiger Forschungsaktivitäten bedarf. This paper analyses the concept of Country-of-Origin and Country Image with the purpose of highlighting implications for international marketing strategies. This is done by presenting an overview of the conceptual background of the two concepts, their influence on consumer behaviour as well as by discussing an integrative framework for their conceptualisation and operationalisation. After emphasising that these concepts indeed have an impact on product evaluations, their relevance for international marketing strategies is assessed. Conventional approaches such as categorisation and ethnocentrism that tend to bias Country-of-Origin effects will be complemented by a brand-new one. Thus, it is argued that Country Image is still a disputed issue and that there is need for further research on this construct.

Most people would agree that the healthcare system in the United States is a mess. Healthcare accounts for a larger percentage of gross domestic product in the United States than in any other industrialized nation, but health outcomes do not reflect this enormous investment. In this book, Philip Rosoff offers a provocative proposal for providing quality healthcare to all Americans and controlling the out-of-control costs that threaten the economy. He argues that rationing—often associated in the public's mind with such negatives as unplugging ventilators, death panels, and socialized medicine—is not a dirty word. A comprehensive, centralized, and fair system of rationing is the best way to distribute the benefits of modern medicine equitably while achieving significant cost savings. Rosoff points out that certain forms of rationing already exist when resources are scarce and demand high: the organ transplant system, for example, and the distribution of drugs during a shortage. He argues that if we incorporate certain key features from these systems, healthcare rationing would be fair—and acceptable politically. Rosoff considers such topics as fairness, decisions about which benefits should be subject to rationing, and whether to compensate those who are denied scarce resources. Finally, he offers a detailed discussion of what an effective and equitable healthcare rationing system would look like.

He was fortunate enough to land a job with Computer Sciences Corporation located on Edwards Air Force Base. There he worked as a computer operator for the company and the base. Philip later was employed by the JT3 Corporation on Edwards Air Force Base. He is currently employed by the United States government as a civil service worker serving as a data technician. Philip currently lives in Rosamond, California. Philip’s hobbies are playing pool, dining out, going to movies, and traveling. He became interested in movies while serving in the Air Force. He started writing movie reviews in 2003 because he thought it would be fun. He got the idea from a movie video catalog. Thus far, he has written over 1500 movie reviews. Philip decided to publish books because he wanted a way to officially document his reviews. Philip also writes reviews on hotels and restaurants.

This volume explores a model of epistemic stance, according to which speakers can communicate each single piece of information either as known/certain or uncertain or unknown. It presents a qualitative analysis of extracts from the Spoken British National Corpus 2014 to support the idea that questions come from two distinct epistemic positions: the Unknowing and the Uncertain; this latter ranges along two poles: Not Knowing Whether and Believing. In the epistemic continuum, Unknowing questions express a lack of knowledge and range from open to closed and dual wh-questions. On the other hand, Uncertain questions express a lack of certainty and range from maximum uncertainty (Not Knowing Whether-questions advancing a doubt) to minimum uncertainty (Believing-questions advancing a supposition). Both Unknowing and Uncertain questions can be directed either at the answerer’s Knowing or Believing position, depending on their aim.
