A seductive, stylish, compelling, and authoritative assembly of vanguard small-scale houses that tread very lightly in nature, leading the way for architects, homeowners, and dreamers to rethink ways we can live, reside, and flourish. Architects have sought more and more to integrate residences into their settings minimally disturbing nature, with houses that float on the water or up in the trees. This book reveals 51 designs that bring their residences into nature, even allowing the natural setting to enter the very walls, with priority given to sustainability and carbon footprint. Each of the book’s homes is carefully chosen for its innovative and seductive design, approachable scale, and stunning location, whether cocooned within the earth itself or soaring high amongst the treetops, surrounded by cooling waters, or resisting the desert heat. Considerations of energy consumption can dictate a green roof in some cases, while blending ever more fully into the environment gives the satisfaction of not existing in contradiction with the world, a kind of escape to the original garden, or more precisely, a return to fundamental, incontrovertible values. The book’s collection spans the globe—from a remote bay on Bruny Island (Tasmania) to an isolated beach in Nicaragua or cabin perched above a fjord in Norway. Today’s architectural vanguard is represented, as well as established firms working at the forefront of twenty-first-century design, such as Tom Kundig of the Seattle practice Olson Kundig and Snøhetta from Oslo. With a wealth of photographs showcasing each house inside and out, plus plans, Houses Natural/Natural Houses offers inspiration—and tranquility.
Oscar Niemeyer was something of an unstoppable architectural force. Over seven decades of work, he designed approximately 600 buildings, transforming skylines from Bab-Ezzouar, Algeria, to his homeland masterpiece, Brasilia.
A look at the most significant architectural and territorial projects by the world-renowned Chilean architect, a leader in the “geopoetic” methodology in architecture. This is the first major book on Zegers, who practices an intensely artistic and ecological form of architecture based on landscapes in which she builds. Working frequently in timber, Zegers reaches unique, sustainable, and recyclable solutions that combine and rescue the traditional work of Chilean carpenters with modern techniques. In an almost metaphysical journey, in which organic forms, curves, diagonals, and verticals are combined, Zegers affirms her rising presence as a force in ecologically minded architecture. The book includes private residences, hotels, and sacred spaces that evoke the geographical magnitude of the Andean landscape. Each project contains poems and sketches made by the architect. In the Soplo (Breath) House, living occurs without imposed spatial hierarchies, in a continuous flow, between interior and exterior. The Tierra Patagonia Hotel, which Zegers associates with the poetic word viento (wind), emerges beside craggy mountains and the glistening Lake Sarmiento at the entrance of the Torres del Paine National Park, with stunning views of the Patagonia wilderness. Zegers proposes a different approach toward architecture in an expressive search intimately related to Chile, its territory, landscape, and traditions. The large format book is specially printed with a fifth color throughout.

This beautifully illustrated book takes the reader on a journey through a number of outstanding contemporary houses designed and built across the richly varied and extraordinary European landscape. Philip Jodidio presents his expertise and knowledge on the most profound influences of contemporary residential architecture in this region. This book pairs images of unique architecture and interior design and a comprehensive analysis of each project, set within full-colour photographic portraits that all together reflect the strength of drive and progressive thinking that inspired these designs. Though progressive, the wide range of architects’ designs draw heavily on the local vernacular of the buildings of this region. Ordering principles borrow from the building’s context and often relate metaphorically to the surrounding natural landscape, connecting the building to its site in a meaningful way. Sustainability and green energy efficiency features are also crucial components in the house design objectives and are seamlessly integrated with the architecture, and these influences are clearly illustrated in this impressive volume.
The firm of Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, which has been practicing for 25 years, entered upon a new phase of its career in 1992, when the architects — in cooperation with the landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson — received the Equerre d’argent prize of the journal Le Moniteur for the L’Oréal corporate headquarters outside Paris. Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity. For some years, Valode & Pistre have not only been practicing in France, their native country, but also maintain offices in Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, China, and elsewhere. This book contains detailed presentations of 18 projects by Valode & Pistre, with documentation focusing on the specific working and design methods of the architects. Projects presented include the Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France; the Las Mercedes business park in Madrid, Spain; a group of office and hotel towers in Beijing, China; and the Hyatt Hotel in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Jean-Paul Viguier was born in Azas, France in 1946. For over twenty years now he has been one of the few French architects to have succeeded in bridging the gap between large-scale public and private projects. As well as numerous buildings in France, he has also realized projects in Asia and in the United States. Viguier was influenced by Mies van der Rohe, and he seeks actively to walk the fine line that separates responsibility and creativity. This publication presents sixteen selected projects by Jean-Paul Viguier dating from the last ten years; they include the Andre Citroen Park, Paris, the French Pavilion at Expo 92 in Seville, the Franco-Chinese Center at Tong Ji University, Shanghai and the Sofitel Hotel, Chicago."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Zaha Hadid est une architecte très controversée qui, malgré son succès critique et ses nombreux récompenses, n'a pourtant pendant des années concrétisé aucun de ses projets.
The Evolution of Designs tells the history of the many analogies that have been made, since the end of the eighteenth century, between the evolution of organisms and the human production of artefacts – especially buildings.
In 1892 Degas' painting In the Café was sold for a mere 180 guineas at auction, with the public hissing as the hammer fell. Less than a century later another Impressionist work, Renoir's Moulin de la Galette, sold at Sotheby's for $78 million, accompanied by enthusiastic applause. In this history-cum-memoir Philip Hook, Senior Director of Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art department, examines the public's change of heart toward Impressionism. Starting with its shocking novelty and confounding style, he traces the impact of the Impressionist painting as it spread to Germany, America, and Great Britain, polarizing modernists and conservatives. Equally fascinating is the story of Impressionism's change in status. More than exceptionally pretty pictures, Impressionist works have become a currency in their own right, being bought and sold like blue-chip stock - coveted as much for their monetary worth as for their intrinsic beauty. Drawn from Hook's own experiences with art collectors and dealers, this fascinating chapter in art history is narrated through the lens of today's art market.
