This book is the first study of its kind that reveals the social justice linkages between three unique characteristics of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus: namely, veterinary scourge, public health contagion fear, and potential bioterrorist weapon. With its extensive referencing, it will be invaluable for scholars of security studies, global public health, and international relations, as well as for professionals, diplomats, and practitioners with an interest in the relationship between global health security and social justice. Comprised of two major sections, the book examines the various representations of knowledge about the H5N1 virus. The first part explores the three major narratives that were used to describe the virus during its 20-year journey from 1996 to 2016. During this time, the virus multiplied its ontological status through narratives that described a localized animal virus, a global public health crisis, and finally an irrational contagion fear. The text’s second section describes in detail a unique aspect of the H5N1 virus’s journey as an emerging infectious disease—its representation as a potential weapon for bioterrorists. As a result, the US government attempted to secure knowledge about the H5N1 virus. This attempt produced a global debate between scientists and policy makers over how to balance the nation-state’s desire for security with the life sciences’ tradition of openly shared research. Known as the dual-use dilemma, this debate set up binaries of impossible reconciliation between the scientific and security communities. This book argues that the H5N1 dual-use dilemma obscures larger questions of justice, and proposes a new concept of justice, knowledge justice, as an alternate, more globally inclusive framework for exploring a socially just way out of the dilemma.

This study deals with the theory and phenomenology of transverse spin effects in high-energy hadronic physics. Contrary to common past belief, it is now rather clear that these effects are far from irrelevant. A decade or so of intense theoretical work has shed much light on the subject and brought to the surface an entire class of new phenomena, which now await thorough experimental investigation. Over the next few years a number of experiments worldwide (at DESY, CERN and Brookhaven) will run with transversely polarised particles, providing data that will enrich our knowledge of the transverse spin structure of hadrons. The principle aim of this work is to assess the state of the art as it stands in 2002. After a few introductory remarks (Chapter 1), in the first part (Chapters 2-4) attention is directed to polarised deep inelastic scattering (DIS), particularly DIS on transversely polarised targets, which probes the transverse spin structure function g2. This structure function is examined within the framework of the quark-parton model and its improvement via perturbative QCD. The existing data are reviewed and commented on (for completeness and comparison, a brief presentation of longitudinally polarised DIS and of the helicity structure of the proton is provided). The second part of the book (Chapters 5-8) focuses on the transverse polarisation of quarks, the so-called "transversity". The partonic content and the QCD evolution of the transversity distributions are presented in detail. The phenomenology of transversity is then studied in the context of Drell-Yan processes and of semi-inclusive lepto- and hadroproduction. The interpretation of data on single-spin asymmetries is discussed and, finally, the prospects for future measurements are reviewed.

This thinking is responsible for a plethora of harmful policies, ranging from a drive towards socialized healthcare systems, to calls for the centralization and semi-nationalization of pharmaceutical research and development, to impractical but grandiose UN-sponsored schemes for tackling HIV/AIDS and malaria.In spite of the abysmal track record of top-down approaches, non-governmental organizations and UN agencies continue to promote them, to the detriment of the private sector, economic development, and human health. The resulting politicization of diseases such as HIV/AIDS has led to a diversion of resources away from more easily treatable diseases that affect more people. Meanwhile, cost-effective and simple interventions such as vaccination are being subordinated to other more politically correct diseases.This centralizing mindset has also resulted in many governments in less developed countries attempting to plan and control universal healthcare systems, which has encouraged rationing, inequitable access, and entrenched corruption. It has also seriously undermined the effectiveness of overseas development aid. Moreover, the politicization of diseases such as HIV/AIDS has led to a diversion of resources away from more easily treatable diseases that affect more people. As a result, cost-effective and simple interventions are neglected by donors.There has to date been little public discussion of the role of markets and their underlying institutions--property rights and the rule of law--in improving human health. Economic growth and globalization has led to unprecedented improvements in human health. The challenge is to enable the poorest countries to take part more fully in this process. Unless you write yourself, you cant know how wonderful it is; I always used to bemoan the fact that I couldnt draw, but now Im overjoyed that at least I can write. And if I dont have the talent to write books or newspaper articles, I can always write for myself.ANN FRANK, A Diary of a Young Girl. And that was what I did, sitting at the kitchen table, pencil in hand, Oxford Dictionary of Current English and a pencil sharpener beside me. It was daunting at the beginning, putting pencil to paper, and I could not remember the number of times I stared blankly at the refrigerator facing me in the kitchen, scouring my mind to recollect memories of past events. Somehow, the encouraging words from the books I had read to prepare me for this journey seemed to lubricate the long stagnant gears of my mind and I just do itthe way I wanted it to be done.

It argues that such changing images were the result of increasing knowledge about the origins of Islam and of various social, intellectual and political changes in the West. It demonstrates that the meaning of Islam for the West was created in the complex relations between the "fact" of Islam and the Western "myth" about it.
