Teaching History in an Uncivilized World is the latest book by National Teacher of the Year Philip Bigler. It is a fascinating chronicle of his 23-year odyssey as a high school history and humanities teacher. Widely recognized for his innovative and exciting methods, Bigler explains how as a novice teacher he discovered the power of using historical simulations to motivate students and to help them become active participants in their own learning. At BCC and McLean High Schools, Bigler taught a variety of history courses and was actively involved in implementing the latest computer technology into his instruction. As the yearbook advisor at McLean, he aggressively upgraded the publication’s limited computer resources and introduced the editors and staff to desktop publishing. Widely respected by both staff and students, Philip Bigler was twice selected by the McLean High School senior class as their “most influential teacher” and was chosen as the school’s Teacher of the Year in 1996. In order to pursue his avid interest in the potential of educational technology to improve student learning, Bigler transferred to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the fall of 1996. There he was selected as the Fairfax County and the Virginia Teacher of the Year. In 1998, Philip Bigler was named the National Teacher of the Year by President Bill Clinton who remarked, “We need more teachers like Philip Bigler…in every classroom in America today for it is they who can make our schools the best in the world.” As the National Teacher of the Year, Bigler was granted a one year sabbatical and traveled extensively speaking to various educational groups and organizations about the importance of teaching. He persuasively argues that “Civilization begins anew with each child” and that “if we fail to teach and educate our young people, we are just one generation removed from barbarism.” Bigler advocates for a return of academic rigor to our nation’s classrooms and the need for strong content standards. This book explains why the climate change crisis is a symptom of a much larger underlying problem – namely, humankind’s predilection with continuous GDP-growth. Given this starting point, the world’s high-income nations must begin the transition to a qualitatively-improving steady-state economy and low-income nations must follow suit at some stage over the next 20-40 years. Unless they do, a well-designed emissions protocol will be as useless as the paper it is written on. Adopting an ecological economic approach, this book sets out why we must abandon the goal of continuous growth; how we can do so in a way that improves human well-being; what constitutes a safe atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases; and what type of emissions protocol and emissions-trading framework is likely to achieve a desirable climate change outcome. Failure of the world’s leaders to achieve these goals will not only put future human well-being at risk, it will threaten freedom in the liberal-democratic tradition and international peace.
Motivation addresses a central problem in psychology: Why does an animal's behavior fluctuate in the face of an unaltered environment? In a sense this is the opposite of the question from which work on motivation began, and for which Claude Bernard invented the concept of the fixity of the internal milieu: How does an animal maintain constancy in the face of a fluctuating environment? Dealing with motivation has become extremely complex as new experiments, phenomena, and theories have extended the concept. This book embodies some of the ways in which work on motivation is currently proceeding. One of the major changes has been the recognition that motivation cannot be explained without an understanding of the biological rhythms and activational systems that underlie behavior. Another is that ecological and evolutionary perspectives add enormously to answering the central problem of why an animal does what it does when it does. The book suffers from several omissions. There is no chapter on the devel opment of motivated behavior. There is none on reward systems in the brain, owing to the untimely death of James Olds, whose contribution would have enriched this book appreciably, and to whom we dedicate it. This book provides a new look at the climatic history of the last 2.6 million years during the ice age, a time of extreme climatic fluctuations that have not yet ended. This period also coincides with important phases of human development from Neanderthals to modern humans, both of whom existed side by side during the last cold stage of the ice age. The ice age has seen dramatic expansions of glaciers and ice sheets, although this has been interspersed with relatively short warmer intervals like the one we live in today. The book focuses on the changing state of these glaciers and the effects of associated climate changes on a wide variety of environments (including mountains, rivers, deserts, oceans and seas) and also plants and animals. For example, at times the Sahara was green and colonized by humans, and Lake Chad covered 350,000 km2 – larger than the United Kingdom. What happened during the ice age can only be reconstructed from the traces that are left in the ground. The work of the geoscientist is similar to that of a detective who has to reconstruct the sequence of events from circumstantial evidence. The use of coal is required to help satisfy the world's energy needs. Yet coal is a difficult fossil fuel to consume efficiently and cleanly. We believe that its clean and efficient use can be increased through improved technology based on a thorough understanding of fundamental physical and chemical processes that occur during consumption. The principal objective of this book is to provide a current summary of this technology. The past technology for describing and analyzing coal furnaces and combus tors has relied largely on empirical inputs for the complex flow and chemical reactions that occur while more formally treating the heat-transfer effects. GrOWing concern over control of combustion-generated air pollutants revealed a lack of understanding of the relevant fundamental physical and chemical mechanisms. Recent technical advances in computer speed and storage capacity, and in numerical prediction of recirculating turbulent flows, two-phase flows, and flows with chemical reaction have opened new opportunities for describing and modeling such complex combustion systems in greater detail. We believe that most of the requisite component models to permit a more fundamental description of coal combustion processes are available. At the same time there is worldwide interest in the use of coal, and progress in modeling of coal reaction processes has been steady.
