Few bands embodied the pure excess of the Seventies like Queen. Theatrical, brilliant, even mercurial – there has never been another band like them, or a frontman like Freddie Mercury. Their performance at the 1985 Live Aid Concert is the stuff of legend and 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are the Champions' have become anthems at sporting events around the world. With one of the most iconic videos ever, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ achieved even greater recognition through inclusion in the movie Wayne's World. Their 1981 Greatest Hits album has sold more than 25 million copies to date. Queen were one of the biggest Eighties stadium rock bands of the Eighties but the death of frontman, songwriter and producer Mercury at the start of the Nineties brought the band to a premature halt. This book tells the full story of the band and its members from pre-Queen to post Freddie.

Austin Osman Spare is the definitive biography of the controversial occultist and artist, an enfant terrible of the Edwardian art world whose work was both hailed as genius and decried as immoral decadence. As George Bernard Shaw reportedly said, "Spare's medicine is too strong for the average man." Trained as a draughtsman, Spare enjoyed early acclaim when, at the age of seventeen, his work was shown at the Royal Academy in London. But his star soon declined; Spare went underground, falling out of the gallery system to live in poverty and obscurity. After a brief association with Aleister Crowley, he became absorbed in occultism and sorcery, voyaging into inner dimensions, while developing his own magical philosophy of pleasure, obsession, and the subjective nature of reality. All the while, Spare continued to produce extraordinary art, and held his exhibitions outside of the conventional art world, in London pubs. Today Spare is both forgotten and famous, a cult figure whose modest life has been much mythologised since his death; the world's largest Spare collection is held by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. Biographer Phil Baker separates fact from myth, providing wide-ranging insights into Spare's art and mind, reconnecting him with the art community that ignored him and exploring the rich tapestry of the culture that surrounded him, interweaving the birth of psychoanalysis, the historiography of the occult, and the British class system. This richly readable and illuminating biography, containing 50 black and white and 8 color photographs of Spare's art, takes us deep into the strange inner world of this enigmatic artist.

Was Philip de László a secret agent and was MI5’s source really as they claimed?Did an enemy spy really paint the portrait of the young Princess Elizabeth? In 1917, noted society portrait painter Philip de László, who painted such luminaries as the Pope, the Austrian emperor, King Edward VII and Prince Louis Battenberg, was subjected to a secret tribunal which interned him for trading with the enemy. At the outbreak of the First World War, de László had pulled strings to be naturalised as British, but in 1919 he was referred to a public committee to revoke his naturalisation. With the aid of skilled counsel, de László had the application overturned – however, newly discovered records show MI5 had evidence obtained from a top-secret source that alleged that he was supplying the enemy with important information on politics and industrial production. Crucially, the source’s anonymity prevented MI5 from presenting evidence to the tribunal, which has particular resonance in the contemporary War on Terror. In the only book to examine MI5’s secret evidence, Phil Tomaselli explores these allegations and reaches a shocking conclusion.

This is a living collection of photos and notes that cover nearly 20 years documenting the life and projects of Artist Phil Hansen (still alive). For what it lacks in depth (coming in the next edition) it makes up in scale. There are over 700 pages of photos, notes and artworks from the personal archives of the Artist. This book also includes a previously unpublished book of mazes and portions of this book act as a flip book. The artist also encourages you to email him if you wonder about something you see or don't see -- your note might prompt an expansion in the next edition.

Swifts pose some of the most difficult identification field identification problems and it is the aim of this guide to provide information that will help resolve many of these problems. For the first time all 96 species of swifts and treeswifts are included in a single volume. Swifts are found throughout the world except in the polar regions; some, such as the Common Swift and the Chimney Swift, are common and widespread, but others are both elusive and scarce. The 24 colour plates have been designed so that, wherever possible, species that can be confused are shown together. All species and, wherever relevant, all distinct plumage differences have been illustrated in flight, from above and below. The main field characteristics are highlighted in the accompanying caption text to facilitate the separation of species whose ranges overlap. The comprehensive text has a strong emphasis on identification and distribution, but also includes information on habitat, voice, habits and breeding. The species' descriptions are very detailed, often describing features that are not easily visible in the field but which may contribute to the overall appearance of the bird. They are intended to be useful both in the field and in the hand. A range map accompanies each species account and many line drawings are included to illustrate specific features. Phil Chantler and Gerald Driessens have between them observed a large number of the world's swifts and they have drawn extensively on this experience in producing this work. This text includes much unpublished data and the painstakingly-researched plates are based on field sketches and photographs wherever possible. This important book, which is the standard reference on the subject, will stimulate interest in these fascinating and challenging birds.
