Monkey Puzzler is the second book in a trilogy. It follows young heroine, Zoe Marshall, as she challenges the strange occurrences in her hometown, Cristelee. In this sequel to The Soul Snatcher, Zoe is trying to write an essay when she comes across a strange story in the local newspaper. She is certain she has seen the article before... Meanwhile, Bob Waterhouse – following a traumatic encounter with monkeys and a lion in the local safari park – is offered a job as sales representative by a mysterious but charming stranger, Zak Araz, who seems to know all about Bob’s life. Bob begins his door-to-door selling with a special offer courtesy of Mr. Araz, a free computer game. When Zoe’s family plays the game, she notices a change in their behaviour as if they were being controlled. After a night out with a friend Zoe realises that a spell has been cast on the town. Puzzled by her brainwashed community, she sets out to find answers from Zak Araz and soon afterwards is paralysed by a venomous spider bite. As Zoe recovers in hospital, she notices that something weird is happening to the clocks and calendars. She believes that Zak is somehow responsible for all of the strange events and when astrophysicist Professor Tompkins reveals evidence of alien activity in the safari park Zoe realises that the future of the World and the Universe is under threat. With the help of the professor and promoted officer DI Benson, Zoe attempts to save her town and the planet from mass destruction. The story climaxes inside the monkey compound in the safari park with a battle between animals and humans, resulting in a terrifying conclusion. This adventurous novel will be enjoyed by children aged 10-16 who relish fantasy fiction. Readers of sci-fi will find this story out-of-this-world with excitement as heroine Zoe tries to save Cristelee.

Hipness has been an indelible part of America's intellectual and cultural landscape since the 1940s. But the question What is hip? remains a kind of cultural koan, equally intriguing and elusive. In Dig, Phil Ford argues that while hipsters have always used clothing, hairstyle, gesture, and slang to mark their distance from consensus culture, music has consistently been the primary means of resistance, the royal road to hip. Hipness suggests a particular kind of alienation from society--alienation due not to any specific political wrong but to something more radical, a clash of perception and consciousness. From the vantage of hipness, the dominant culture constitutes a system bent on excluding creativity, self-awareness, and self-expression. The hipster's project is thus to define himself against this system, to resist being stamped in its uniform, squarish mold. Ford explores radio shows, films, novels, poems, essays, jokes, and political manifestos, but argues that music more than any other form of expression has shaped the alienated hipster's identity. Indeed, for many avant-garde subcultures music is their raison d'être. Hip intellectuals conceived of sound itself as a way of challenging meaning--that which is cognitive and abstract, timeless and placeless--with experience--that which is embodied, concrete and anchored in place and time. Through Charlie Parker's "Ornithology," Ken Nordine's "Sound Museum," Bob Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man," and a range of other illuminating examples, Ford shows why and how music came to be at the center of hipness. Shedding new light on an enigmatic concept, Dig is essential reading for students and scholars of popular music and culture, as well as anyone fascinated by the counterculture movement of the mid-twentieth-century. Swifts pose some of the most difficult identification field identification problems and it is the aim of this guide to provide information that will help resolve many of these problems. For the first time all 96 species of swifts and treeswifts are included in a single volume. Swifts are found throughout the world except in the polar regions; some, such as the Common Swift and the Chimney Swift, are common and widespread, but others are both elusive and scarce. The 24 colour plates have been designed so that, wherever possible, species that can be confused are shown together. All species and, wherever relevant, all distinct plumage differences have been illustrated in flight, from above and below. The main field characteristics are highlighted in the accompanying caption text to facilitate the separation of species whose ranges overlap. The comprehensive text has a strong emphasis on identification and distribution, but also includes information on habitat, voice, habits and breeding. The species' descriptions are very detailed, often describing features that are not easily visible in the field but which may contribute to the overall appearance of the bird. They are intended to be useful both in the field and in the hand. A range map accompanies each species account and many line drawings are included to illustrate specific features. Phil Chantler and Gerald Driessens have between them observed a large number of the world's swifts and they have drawn extensively on this experience in producing this work. This text includes much unpublished data and the painstakingly-researched plates are based on field sketches and photographs wherever possible. This important book, which is the standard reference on the subject, will stimulate interest in these fascinating and challenging birds.
