This book combines theoretical and experimental aspects of the establishment of dependency. It provides an account of dependency relations by focusing on the representation and interpretation of referentially dependent elements, particularly regular reflexives, logophors, and pronouns. First, the establishment of dependency is discussed within a model of syntax—discourse correspondences that predicts an economy-based dependency hierarchy contingent on the level of representation at which the dependency is formed as well as the internal structure of the dependent element and its antecedent. Secondly, the model’s predictions are substantiated by a series of experimental studies (conducted in English and Dutch) providing evidence from three sources of online sentence comprehension: reaction time studies, Broca’s aphasia patient studies, and event-related brain potential studies. The findings show that dependencies are established at distinct levels of linguistic encoding (i.e. syntax or discourse) determined by the presence or absence of coargumenthood and the representation of the dependency-forming elements.

In Europe, Indian hobbyism, or Indianism, has developed out of a strong fascination with Native American life in the 18th and 19th centuries. “Indian hobbyists” dress in homemade replicas of clothing, craft museum-quality replicas of artifacts, meet in fields dotted with tepees and reenact aspects of North American Indian lifeworlds, using ethnographies, travel diaries, and museum collections as resources. Grounded in fieldwork set among networks of Indian hobbyists in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and the Czech Republic, this ethnography analyzes this contemporary practice of serious leisure with respect to the general human desire for play, metaphor, and allusion. It provides insights into the increasing popularity of reenactment practices as they relate to a deeper understanding of human perception, imagination, and creativity.

The "margins" in Petra Fachinger's work are occupied largely by second-generation migrant writers from Spain, Italy, and Turkey, German Jewish writers of diverse ethnic origins, and writers born in the GDR. She demonstrates that during the 1980s and 1990s writers from various cultural backgrounds engaged in oppositional discourse to construct their own version of Germany and write back to the German canon. While most studies of texts by minority writers in Germany favour content over form, Fachinger focuses on identifying counter-discursive strategies, and applies postcolonial theory concerned with textual resistance to the German situation. In doing so, this study effectively relates marginal writing in Germany to similar forms of writing in other national and cultural contexts. The oppositional impulse, whether manifested in counter-canonical discourse, postcolonial picaresque, hybridity, rewriting of genre, or grotesque realism, is prompted by the exclusionary politics of the dominant culture. The discursive strategies used by the authors discussed to rewrite Germany expose the assumptions that underlie German public discourse and destabilise notions of Germanness, Jewishness, and Turkishness. Fachinger's reading of texts by marginal writers in Germany, all of whom endeavour to resist marginalisation while simultaneously experiencing or even celebrating the margin as a site of empowerment, was motivated by the absence of comparative studies of such writing. Rewriting Germany from the Margins demonstrates the necessity and usefulness of comparative approaches to minority discourses across national and cultural borders.

Theologian. Conspirator. Martyr. Saint. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was killed in the waning days of World War II, having been implicated in the July 20th assassination attempt on Hitler. Since his death, Bonhoeffer’s life and writings have inspired contradictory responses. He is often seen as a model for Christian pacifist resistance, and more recently for violent direct political action. Bonhoeffer’s name has been invoked by violent anti-abortion protestors as well as political leaders calling for support on a ‘war on terror’ in the aftermath of 9/11. Petra Brown critically analyses Bonhoeffer’s writing preceding and during his conspiracy involvement, particularly his recurring concept of the ‘extraordinary.’ Brown examines this idea in light of ‘the state of exception,’ a concept coined by the one-time Nazi jurist and political theorist, Carl Schmitt. She also draws on the existentialist philosopher Sören Kierkegaard to consider what happens when discipleship is understood as obedience to a divine command. This book aims to complicate an unreflective admiration of Bonhoeffer’s decision for conspiracy, and draws attention to the potentially dangerous implications of his emerging political theology.

Evropské neonacistické hnutí se ze své ideologické podstaty staví negativně vůči globalizaci a mezinárodní migraci. Přesto samo těchto fenoménů využívá k sjednocování se na evropské a celosvětové úrovni ve snaze vytvořit jednotné hnutí, které bude schopné prosadit vlastní ideologii. V Evropě pozorujeme výrazné posilování mezinárodních vazeb mezi neonacisty z jednotlivých zemí, posilování vzájemných kontaktů a narůstající počet aktivit s mezinárodní účastí. Viditelné je rychlé šíření se jednotlivých konceptů a strategií a upevňování společné ideologie nacionálního socialismu s velmi jasnou vizí bílé Evropy. Cílem této publikace je analyzovat transnacionalizaci neonacistického hnutí, a to z perspektivy českých neonacistů. Publikace nabízí vhled do představy neonacistického hnutí o Evropě, představuje ideologii sjednocující jednotlivá národní neonacistická hnutí. Také představuje neonacistické koncepty a strategie jako příklady transnacionalizace. Dále identifikuje formy konkrétních aktivit mezinárodní spolupráce.

Gendered Testimonies of the Holocaust: Writing Life begins with the premise that writing proves virtually synonymous with survival, bearing the traces of life and of death carried within those who survived the atrocities of the Nazis. In reading specific testimonies by survivor-writers Paul Celan, Charlotte Delbo, Olga Lengyel, Gisella Perl, and Dan Pagis, this text seeks to answer the question: How was it possible for these survivors to write about human destruction, if death is such an intimate part of the survivors’ survival? This book shows how the works of these survivors arise creatively from a vigorous spark, the desire to preserve memory. Testimony for each of these writers is a form of relation to oneself but also to others. It situates each survivor’s anguish in writing as a need to write so as to affirm life. Writing as such always bears witness to the life of the one who should be dead by now and thus to the miracle of having survived. This book’s claim is that the act of writing testimony manifests itself as the most intensive form of life possible. More specifically, its exploration of writing’s affirmation of life and assertion of identity focuses on the gendered dimension of expression and language. This book does not engage in the binary structure of gender and the hierarchically constructed roles in terms of privileging the male over the female. The criteria that guide its discussion on Gendered Testimonies emerge out of Levinas’s concept of maternity.

How are biological diversity, protected areas, indigenous knowledge and religious worldviews related? From an anthropological perspective, this book provides an introduction into the complex subject of conservation policies that cannot be addressed without recognising the encompassing relationship between discursive, political, economic, social and ecological facets. By facing these interdependencies across global, national and local dynamics, it draws on an ethnographic case study among Maya-Q'eqchi' communities living in the margins of protected areas in Guatemala. In documenting the cultural aspects of landscape, the study explores the coherence of diverse expressions of indigenous knowledge. It intends to remind of cultural values and beliefs closely tied to subsistence activities and ritual practices that define local perceptions of the natural environment. The basic idea is to illustrate that there are different ways of knowing and reasoning, seeing and endowing the world with meaning, which include visible material and invisible interpretative understandings. These tend to be underestimated issues in international debates and may provide an alternative approach upon which conservation initiatives responsive to the needs of the humans involved should be based on.

When Prince Albert died in 1861 at the age of forty-two, his wife Queen Victoria followed this tragic event by an elaborate mourning period in which she surrounded herself as well as her people with memorials of the Prince Consort. Of these, the three most elaborate, the Albert Memorial Chapel, the Royal Mausoleum and the National Memorial to the Prince Consort, all included mosaic decoration. In close connection to current architectural theories such as polychromy or the ideal of the complete decoration as well as the research and experimentation that was carried out with and about the medium mosaic, the memorial mosaics were planned and designed. The medium Queen Victoria chose for these monuments served to underline and strengthen the image of Prince Albert that she created and through this also helped to secure her own claim to power as female sovereign. This book presents an overview of the history of mosaic in England up to the 1860s and a detailed description of the processes of planning and creating the mosaics. Queen Victoria’s memorial program as a whole will be described and compared to contemporary mourning rituals as well as British precedents for initiating similar cults.

This volume deals with the determination of the times of Muslim prayer and the direction towards the Kaaba in Mecca (Arabic qibla) in a little known astronomical tradition of the Islamic Middle Ages. It presents an edition, translation, and explanation of selected chapters from three of the most important folk astronomical treatises, written by al-Aṣbaḥī (Yemen, 13th c.), Ibn Raḥīq (Hejaz, 11th c.), and al-Fārisī (Yemen, 13th c.). The first part introduces the authors and their works and describes the relevant religious and astronomical background. The second part comprises the edition of the selected – and now for the first time published – chapters of the three works and a German translation. The third part contains a lexicographical survey with basic astronomical, religious, and related information, and a commentary on each chapter. The fourth part gives an overview of the topics dicussed.

Why is voice so important to us? How does the concept of voice encompass such disparate practices as vocal sound, marks on a page, identity production and the execution of power? With these questions in mind, this book studies voice as both a textual and a bodily phenomenon. By using both drama and film, and by exploring the translation between the two, this study shows that voice can be placed in a grid where the subject, body, language and power interconnect in ways that question established ideas concerning voice – what it is and what it can do. The book investigates how voice, as an expression of the individual subject, is central in the fight for power in plays such as The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Amiri Baraka’s Dutchman and Ntosake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide, where voice is seen as fundamental for political action. However, it also questions the seemingly failsafe connection between voice and the subject. In Eugene O’Neill’s Strange Interlude, the relation between voice and thought is neither harmonious nor given, and thus voice becomes something other than an expression of subjective interiority. The discussion of Clare Booth’s The Women highlights how voice in ironic discourse disrupts notions of intentionality, subjectivity and power in ways that destabilize preconceived notions of voice. Lastly, the chapter on David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross asks if voice really can empower the subject in an age where processes of reification have invaded the subject’s consciousness, including the ability to communicate.

In order to mitigate the lack of context inherent to the study of dead languages, the author has developed a descriptive model that combines (a) cognitive approaches to reference, (b) a theory of information structure, and (c) typological studies on demonstratives. With the help of this model the author not only provides for the first time a thorough description of the long-known demonstratives ka- "this" and apa- "that", but also identifies a third demonstrative, asi "that, yonder". This identification has led to a reappraisal of the distal semantics of apa-: apa- does not mark remote objects at all but points at objects in the vicinity of the addressee. In short, the Hittite demonstratives are not distance- but person-based. As a third person pronoun, apa- also expresses emphasis. A detailed analysis within the framework of information structure shows, for example, that apa- in preverbal position marks a referent as the Contrastive Focus of its clause (in "the dog (not the cat) chased the horse", dog is in Contrastive Focus). Non-contrastive focal apa-, on the other hand, always occurs in initial position. The addition of information structure to the grammatical description of Hittite thus provides a better understanding of the meaning effects of word order variation in this SOV language.
