Peter van de Kamp was born in The Hague, The Netherlands in 1956. He taught English and Anglo-Irish Literature, Rhetoric and Stylistics at the University of Leiden and University College, Dublin, where he was a Newman Scholar. He now teaches at the Institute of Technology, Tralee. A poet, translator, critic, anthologist and scholar, he has published extensively in Ireland, England, Europe and the States. In all, he has published 17 books. His first collection of poetry, Notes, was published by Salmon in 1999. He was the founder of K.I.S.S., the Kerry International Summer School of Living Irish Authors.

This book provides essential information on 12 cockroach assemblages with more than a thousand specimens analyzed and investigates the Jurassic site in Bakhar, Mongolia, as one of the most diverse fossil insect sites worldwide. The findings presented here include 32 new cockroach species (of a total of 300 Jurassic species described worldwide). Since several individuals of each species are investigated, the book is the first that contains information on the variability of an Upper Jurassic organism. The wings of the cockroach specimen only rarely show wing deformations, suggesting that the ecological conditions at Bakhar were optimal during that time. The book’s content is clearly structured, moving from collection methods, to phylogenetic analyses, to a comparison of global fossil sites. Given its scope, the book appeals to all (Jurassic) paleontologists, botanists and paleoentomologists, as it offers an unbiased counterpart to the extensively studied Daohugou site in China. It is also useful in the mining industry, as the strata contain strategic coal (and other materials).

The conversion of Lutz Löb and Jenny van Gelder from Judaism to Roman Catholicism dramatically changed the lives of the extended Löb family. This scientific-historical study traces the personal and spiritual journey of Lutz and Jenny from their baptisms in 1907 through the lives of their children. The story benefits from historical documents and pieces of oral history from the only one of their eight children who survived the Nazi era, Paula van Broekhoven-Löb. The abbess of Koningsoord Abbey and the abbot of Koningshoeven Abbey generously provided access to the archives of the monasteries where the seven other Löb children lived as nuns and monks of the Löb family. Each chapter begins with a citation from a significant situation or event, placing the reader immediately within the lived experience of that period. Photos of the time and the family supplement the historical narrative. The secret conversion of Lutz and Jenny and their lifelong witness to their faith created a tear in the fabric of the extended family while later leading to many idealized portrayals of them and their children. It is the intent of this book to offer an accurate and balanced account, situating the Catholic Löb family within their extended Jewish family, and to correct several decades of hagiography, so restoring humanity and dignity to the memories of the Löb family.

Multidimensional Pharmacochemistry: Design of Safer Drugs deals with techniques based on the theory of simultaneous statistical inference and the qualitative rules that can be applied in solving problems of high toxicity. This book points out that the multidimensional view of data analysis can be applied to solve problems in medicinal chemistry. Investigators use different approaches; a certain procedure can prove to be the most beneficial for a specific drug design. This text presents the theoretical assumptions that mathematicians make to derive the basis for their multivariate techniques. This book also describes, in nonmathematical terms, a set of methods that are valuable, as well as explain the different designs by using numerical examples. According to E.J. Ariens, drug action involves the pharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic-toxokinetic, and pharmacodynamics-toxodynamic phases. The multivariate structure-activity analysis (MASCA) Model of Pharmacochemistry is a highly unified multivariate approach to drug design. To develop a multidimensionally oriented pharmacology, the book notes that the investigator can use the "dynamic structure-activity analysis." This entails the experimentalist and chemist using quantitative approaches and intuitive elements from a small number of compounds toward larger groups, with successive changes being inputted in the desired biological activity. This book is strongly recommended for toxicologists, pharmacologists, applied mathematicians, medicinal and agricultural chemists.

Among the more intriguing documentary sources from late medieval Europe are pardon letters—petitions sent by those condemned for serious crimes to monarchs and princes in France and the Low Countries in the hopes of receiving a full pardon. The fifteenth-century Burgundian Low Countries and duchy of Burgundy produced a large cache of these petitions, from both major cities (Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, and Dijon) and rural communities. In Honor, Vengeance, and Social Trouble, Peter Arnade and Walter Prevenier present the first study in English of these letters to explore and interrogate the boundaries between these sources' internal, discursive properties and the social world beyond the written text.Honor, Vengeance, and Social Trouble takes the reader out onto the streets and into the taverns, homes, and workplaces of the Burgundian territories, charting the most pressing social concerns of the day: everything from family disputes and vendettas to marital infidelity and property conflicts—and, more generally, the problems of public violence, abduction and rape, and the role of honor and revenge in adjudicating disputes. Arnade and Prevenier examine why the right to pardon was often enacted by the Burgundian dukes and how it came to compete with more traditional legal means of resolving disputes. In addition, they consider the pardon letter as a historical source, highlighting the limitations and pitfalls of relying on documents that are, by their very nature, narratives shaped by the petitioner to seek a favored outcome.
