Macroautophagy is mainly considered to be a mechanism for the bulk degradation of the cytoplasm in times of nutrient depletion. However, growing evidence suggests that macroautophagy is more substrate-specific than originally considered. Numerous cytosolic components are selectively degraded by macroautophagy, including aggresomes, damaged mitochondria, peroxisomes, ribosomes, midbodies, and bacteria and viruses. Although the specific molecular components may differ for each substrate, the general mechanism of selective macroautophagy involves the targeted ubiquitination of the substrate and the recruitment of autophagy receptors. Autophagy receptors are proteins that act as an interface between the substrate and the nascent autophagosome, the double-membrane structure that sequesters the cytoplasm for delivery to lysosomes for degradation. In this chapter we will describe the general mechanism of selective autophagy in the mammalian system, focusing on the most described autophagy receptor, p62. The emerging data suggest that selective autophagy is not only necessary for cell survival during nutrient starvation, but also plays a critical role in cell development, cellular responses to oxidative stress, and innate immunity.

This first of two volumes presents the archaeological evidence of a long sequence of settlement and funerary activity from the Beaker period (Early Bronze Age c. 2000 BC) to the Early Iron Age (c. 500 BC) at the unusually long-occupied site of Cladh Hallan on South Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland. Particular highlights of its sequence are a cremation burial ground and pyre site of the 18th–16th centuries BC and a row of three Late Bronze Age sunken-floored roundhouses constructed in the 10th century BC. Beneath these roundhouses, four inhumation graves contained skeletons, two of which were remains of composite collections of body parts with evidence for post-mortem soft tissue preservation prior to burial. They have proved to be the first evidence for mummification in Bronze Age Britain. Cladh Hallan’s remarkable stratigraphic sequence, preserved in the machair sand of South Uist, includes a unique 500-year sequence of roundhouse life in Late Bronze Age and Iron Age Britain. One of the most important results of the excavation has come from intensive environmental and micro-debris sampling of house floors and outdoor areas to recover patterns of discard and to interpret the spatial use of 15 domestic interiors from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. From Cladh Hallan’s roundhouse floors we gain intimate insights into how daily life was organized within the house – where people cooked, ate, worked and slept. Such evidence rarely survives from prehistoric houses in Britain or Europe, and the results make a profound contribution to long-running debates about the sunwise organisation of roundhouse activities. Activity at Cladh Hallan ended with the construction and abandonment of two unusual double-roundhouses in the Early Iron Age. One appears to have been a smokery and steam room, and the other was used for metalworking.

In 1960 a young Englishman decided to invest ten pounds for the opportunity to travel to the other side of the world on a cruise liner, the trip being heavily subsidised by the Australian Government. He was to become one of the many Ten pound Tourists to migrate from Britain to Australia following the Second World War. Within a week of his arrival in Australia he had managed to secure a flat at Bondi Beach, a job in Sydneys business district and had also met the girl he was to marry two years later. Little could he have foreseen at that time that these events would prove to have such a profound effect not only on their lives but also those of other family members. Shortly after he and his fiance had married they decided to travel to England to meet his family and enjoy a two year stay before returning to Australia. However, after a few months in England, whilst enjoying a few drinks in a local pub with friends, his younger brother mentioned the idea of an overland trip back to the Land Down Under. The idea of Overland on a Shoestring was born. It took over two years to prepare for the journey, during which time the party of eight purchased two 1942 vintage ex World War II Willys Jeeps and an old Bedford van that cost fifty pounds. Thus, in June, 1964 they set off on a journey which would take them through Scandinavia, Europe and Asia where their adventure would be punctuated by numerous vehicle breakdowns. There were also other surprises including waking up one morning in the desert to behold vultures circling above them and on another occasion, having set up camp one evening, they found that the field that they had chosen was in fact a Turkish artillery range that was to be bombarded minutes later. They eventually arrived in Australia in December, 1964, fit and well in spite of having shed almost a third of their bodyweight. Every member of the party remained in Australia to become Australian citizens.

After the 1960s, rapid urbanization in developing regions in Latin America, Africa, and Asia was marked by the expansion of low-income "irregular" settlements that developed informally and which, by the 2000s, often constituted between 20-60 percent of the built-up area of metropolitan areas and other large cities. There has been a variety of research directed at the housing policies involved with these informal settlements, yet apart from the activities of Latin American Housing Network (LAHN), there has been minimal attention directed at the earliest portion of settlements that formed some 25-40 years ago that now form a large part of the intermediate ring of the cities. This volume breaks new ground by opening up a new generation of housing policy in Latin America cities with broader application for other developing countries. Its editors bring unique perspectives: Peter Ward coordinates the LAHN, and Edith Jiménez and María Di Virgilio are founding members of the network who have led project teams in Guadalajara and Buenos Aires respectively. Developed as a coordinated collaborative research project, the volume encompasses nine Latin American countries and eleven cities. The editors and contributors offer original perspectives on the policy challenges facing much of the low income housing of Latin American cities; document the changing nature of the "first suburbs"; present comparative survey findings in order to better understand the types of consolidated settlements that exist today; describe the physical nature of the dwellings themselves; identify the reasons behind market dysfunction that impede the operation of consolidated housing informal markets in Latin American cities; and outline a new generation of housing policies that will support the processes of densification, rehabilitation, and regeneration of these settlements. This book is the first and only composite overview of the research findings and advocacy of the generic policy lines that the LAHN identifies as central to a new generation of housing strategies and approaches.
