Now preserved for almost sixty years, the former Midland Railway branch from Keighley to Oxenhope to the west of Bradford may not be one of the countrys longest indeed it only stretches for just under five miles but it is one of the countrys most popular preserved lines. With a history stretching back to the mid-nineteenth century, the Keighley & Worth Valley provided an essential link for the communities that it served for almost a century. The harsh economic realities of the 1950s made its future uncertain and its fate was, theoretically, sealed before the infamous Beeching Report of March 1963. However, there were a number of local enthusiasts who, having previously witnessed the demise of the ex-Great Northern Railway Queensbury Triangle routes in the mid-1950s, were determined that the Oxenhope line would not suffer a similar fate. With the line preserved, services were triumphantly restored in 1968 and the line has been providing pleasures for tourists and enthusiasts ever since.

Peter Gow unites the ethnographic data collected by the fieldwork methods invented by Malinowski with Levi-Strauss's analyses of the relations between myth and time. His book is an analysis of a century of social transformation in an indigenous Amazonian society, the Piro people of PeruvianAmazonia, taking as its starting point a single myth told to the author by a Piro man. Gow explores Piro history and ethnography outwards into the domains of myth-telling in general, and following the logic of certain important myths, further out into important domains of Piro experience such asvisual art, shamanry and girls' initiation ritual. All of these domains, like the myths themselves, have been demonstrably changing over the period since the 1880s. The book then shows how these changes are in fact transformations of transformations, changes in social forms that are intrinsicallyabout change. The logic of these changes are then followed through the historical circumstances of Piro people from the 1880s to the 1980s, to show how the intrinsically transformational nature of Piro social forms led them to respond in the ways that they did to the coming of rubber bosses,missionaries, and film-makers.This book makes an important contribution to debates in anthropology on the nature of history and social change, as well as addressing neglected areas such as myth, visual art, and the methodological issues involved in addressing fieldwork and archival data.

They shared a name, of course, and their physical resemblance was startling. And both Frank Thrings were huge figures in the landscape of twentieth-century Australian theatre and film. He won fame playing tyrants in togas in Hollywood blockbusters, then, suddenly, came home to Melbourne to play perhaps his finest role — that of Frank Thring, actor and personality extraordinaire. Central to this role was that Frank the son was unapologetically and outrageously gay. Peter Fitzpatrick’s compelling dual biography tells the story of two remarkable characters. We examine whether Nigerian women have equal rights with men. To rectify these conditions such as discrimination based on gender, violence, and other maltreatments, we apply qualitative methodology using content analysis, personal knowledge, and observations. We found that in Nigeria, it is traditional customs and deep-rooted cultural mores, and Islamic religious beliefs tend to compete with customary law and the statutory laws inherited from England. The former has taken precedence and profoundly overshadowed the latter. However, there is a high incidence of violence, discrimination, and other maltreatments against women.

Although there had been experiments with the use of a new form of transport - the 'trackless tram' (better known as the trolleybus) - during the first decade of the 20th century, it was in June 1911 that Bradford and Leeds became the country's pioneering operators of trolleybuses. Whilst, in Leeds, the trolleybus was destined to have a fairly peripheral role (and finally disappeared in 1928), in Bradford, perhaps as a consequence of the hills surrounding the city centre which represented ideal territory for the trolleybus, the 'trackless' was destined to have a long and illustrious career stretching for more than 60 years until - on 26 March 1972 - the final first-generation trolleybus system finally succumbed to the all-conquering motorbus. This is the first of two volumes to cover the history of all of the trolleybus operators of the British Isles and focuses on those systems in the North of England and Scotland as well as the only network in Northern Ireland - Belfast. The book includes comprehensive fleet and route histories allied to some 250 illustrations, both color and mono, including a map of each network featured.
