Watch out! A little boy comes rushing down a hill, through busy streets, a pasture, a tennis yard and a meadow — before finally coming to rest, safely in a haystack. Peter Newell’s’s own hilarious, topsy-turvy illustrations fill the pages of the classic "The Slant Book", which was one of the earliest ‘picture books’. This first edition from 1910 is guaranteed to still entertain both young and old. Peter Newell (1862-1924) was an American artist, author and illustrator of children’s books. Creating his own picture books, such as "The Hole Book" and "The Slant Book", he also illustrated first editions of books by authors such as Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, John Kendrick Bangs, and Lewis Carroll.
This fully revised and expanded new edition provides a short and accessible introduction to how climate change is governed by an increasingly diverse range of actors, from civil society and business actors to multilateral development banks, donors, and cities. The issue of global climate change has risen to the top of the international political agenda. Despite ongoing contestation about the science informing policy, the economic costs of action and the allocation of responsibility for addressing the issue within and between nations, it is clear that climate change will continue to be one of the most pressing and challenging issues facing humanity for many years to come. The book: Evaluates the role of states and non-state actors in governing climate change at multiple levels of political organization: local, national, and global Provides a discussion of theoretical debates on climate change governance, moving beyond analytical approaches focused solely on nation-states and international negotiations Examines a range of key topical issues in the politics of climate change Includes multiple examples from both the north and the global south Providing an inter-disciplinary perspective drawing on geography, politics, international relations, and development studies, this book is essential reading for all those concerned not only with the climate governance but with the future of the environment in general.
A timeless classic, Topsys and Turvys Number 2 is the perfect interactive book for people of all ages. It's been 120 years since Peter Newell's enduringly popular Topsys and Turvys 2—the sequel to his bestselling Topsy and Turvys—was first published in the United States. Using the same ingenious style and imagination, he invents worlds of confusion and fun as he transforms hunters into bears, has a buffalo converse with a tree frog, or creates and illustrates pure nonsense. The story changes depending on whether you are holding the action book "upside-down" or "right-side-up." These beautiful classic books reproduce all of the brilliant color and charm of the originals while ensuring that Topsys and Turvys can be shared and enjoyed anew by future generations. Peter Newell (1862-1924) began his career as an artist drawing portraits, using crayons as his medium. In his fantastic humor, many believe, is the first appearance of the gentle comedy of the absurd which The New Yorker has subsequently developed to such a high level. Tuttle Publishing has kept Newell's retro books in print for the new generation to enjoy a whimsical, thought-provoking look at life.
Quirky, clever, and marvelously inventive, this book takes the reader into a world of imagination and adventure. Peter Newell utilizes a unique cartoon art form that the reader perceives as an optical illusion. Each illustration is supported by a caption that turns each page into loads of fun. Each page will delight the reader with a new and uniquely illustrated story that tells its tale right-side up and upside down. It provides as much entertainment for adults as it does for the children for whom it was created. Topsys & Turvys Book 2 also available from Tuttle Publishing.

He struck a match with one fell swoop; Then, on the concrete kneeling, he lit the rocket and—she—oop! It shot up through the ceiling." Long before Richard Scarry or Dr. Seuss, an American artist delighted a generation of children and their parents with hilarious, topsy-turvy illustrations and slightly subversive tales told in rhyme. This was illustrator/author Peter Newell. Originally published in 1912, The Rocket Book remains as profoundly enjoyable and incredibly popular as ever. This classic work will delight readers of all ages with the story of how a rocket launched from the basement floor of an apartment building and how it interrupts the day. Der freche Fritz zündet im Keller des Hochhauses, in dem sein Vater der Hausmeister ist, eine vergessene Rakete, und die saust nun mit Wunderkraft durch alle zwanzig Stockwerke. Was sie dabei anrichtet, hat sich Peter Newell ausgedacht und mit lustigen Bildern versehen.
In the early 1900s, author Peter Newell wrote tow special books for children to enjoy along with their parents. For the youngest, these were a "read to me" books. For children with a few years of experience, they could be read privately and enjoyed. Every page of story is accompanied by an illustration showing exactly what Newell pictured happening as he wrote the story. But, each book had something very special about it. For THE ROCKET BOOK, right in the middle of the text, from page to page, special pictures showed how the hole being made by the errant rocket grew and grew! For THE SLANT BOOK, Newell had everything set at an angle. Even the book was trimmed at an angle so the outside matched the inside. We are uncertain if these ever were published together (it is doubtful) but here they are. Together. To enjoy. Please note that because of their age, these stories are in the Public Domain.
