Having grown up in post-World War II Poland, Loth had known very little about his past. As an adult he had discovered he had been born in Stutthof Concentration Camp. In this gripping memoir, Loth embarks on a painful journey back to his childhood.
The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 35 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.
In the first part of this book, the reader is introduced to the theory of abelian groups focusing on the classification problem. The structure of totally projective p-groups is determined and Hill's version of Ulm's Theorem is proved. It is shown how this classification theorem is generalized to larger classes of abelian groups such as the balanced projective groups and Warfield groups. A variety of characterizations of these groups is proved generalizing corresponding results for totally projective p-groups. In the second part of this text, the author studies certain classes of compact abelian groups using Pontrjagin duality. After providing the necessary tools for dualization, the structure of the compact groups dual to the totally projective p-groups, balanced projective groups, and Warfield groups is established. Finally, the duals of completely decomposable groups and Butler groups are studied. Supplemented with numerous exercises and research problems, this book is suitable for graduate students, as well as undergraduate students with a sufficient background in algebra and topology.
The idea of a connection between poetry and religion is as old as civilization. Homer consulted the Olympian gods on the fate of the fighters on the plain before Troy, and the poet made the heavenly ones speak. It was through poetry that the gods were brought within reach of human hearing. In the centuries after Homer, the Athenian stage became the setting where gods made their poetic interventions, resolving human impasses and contributing to the emotional synchronization of the public life of the city. Sloterdijk argues that, as with the culture of the Ancient Greeks, all religions inscribe a kind of “theopoetry” at the heart of their cultural life and thought, even as they strenuously obscure these poetic origins through the cultivation and enforcement of orthodox norms. Sloterdijk also shows how, in conditions of religious pluralism, religions poetically reshape themselves to accommodate the demands of the religious marketplace. This highly original study of the poetic devices that inform accounts of the otherworldly offers a new interpretation of religious practice and its theological elaboration through history, as well as a fresh perspective on our contemporary age in which collective life, interwoven with imaginative fabrications, is fraying under critical stress.
This study aims to shed light on the relationship of writers with power in East Germany by setting their work in the context of Soviet and SED German policy after 1945. Peter Davies provides an analysis of the politics of German division as it affected visions of German national identity within the East German artistic community, and shows how this can give us a profound insight into contentious questions of artistic `dissidence' and `conformity'. The second part of the study develops these ideas through a series of case studies of important individuals such as Johannes R. Becher, Peter Huchel, Bertolt Brecht and Hanns Eisler, analysing the complexities of their relationship with the power structures and ideology of the East German state in the institutional context of the Deutsche Akademie der Kunste. The study concludes with an account of the consequences of the June 1953 uprising for these artists' view of their role in the GDR.
The languages belonging to the British subgroup of Celtic, i.e. Welsh, Cornish and Breton, have been the subject of thorough research for over a century now. Yet the phonological history of the prehistoric stages of these languages and the details of their connection with the other Celtic and Indo-European languages still present numerous unsolved issues. This volume aims to tackle the most acute problems of the historical phonology of British Celtic. Also it provides an up-to-date reference guide to British historical phonology in general, as well as a study of a large body of etymologies relevant to the correct evaluation of the historical phonology. This volume is of interest for the Celtologist, the Indo-Europeanist and the general historical linguist.
A look at the lives of more than 100 young white men from Virginia's last generation to grow up with the institution of slavery. By examining members of this generation on personal as well as generational and cultural levels, Carmichael sheds light on the formation and reformation of Southern identity.
Drawing on recently declassified Soviet archival sources, this book sheds new light on how the division of Europe came about in the aftermath of World War II. The book contravenes the notion that a neutral zone of states, including Germany, could have been set up between East and West. The Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin was determined to preserve control over its own sphere of German territory. By tracing Stalin's attitude toward neutrality in international politics, the book provides important insights into the origins of the Cold War.
Advances in Energy Systems and Technology present the first volume of articles that provides a critical review of specific topics within the general field of energy. It discusses the technological issues in a broader systems context. It addresses the technical factors underlying energy developments. Some of the topics covered in the book are the introduction and development of wind power, the production of fuels from biomass, biomass conversion, aerodynamics, sources of biomass, and the technologies used to obtain energy from biomass. The analysis of the ethanol fermentation is covered. The process of pyrolysis is discussed. The text describes the anaerobic digestion of organic substrates. The alcohol production from sugar cane is presented. A chapter is devoted to the fuel production from pyrolysis of wastes. Another section focuses on the conversion of forest products to electric power and generation of geothermal energy. The book can provide useful information to scientists, engineers, students, and researchers.
This seminal project aims to fundamentally change the way we think about semantics, from the combined perspectives of the mind, nature, society and culture, with enormous implications for the human future and what the author originally called its 'post-human' fate.

Peter Swenson's study implies that contrary to popular wisdom the welfare state builders in the USA and Sweden during the 1930s were motivated by a pragmatism founded in capitalist interests and preferences.
A clear, concise and thought-provoking introduction to the history of East Germany which engages critically with key debates and advances new interpretations of the origins, development and demise of the GDR. Peter Grieder also offers an original conceptualization of the GDR as a totalitarian welfare state.
In 1945 Britain emerged from the Second World War exhausted and debilitated, but still a major global power, with enormous strategic commitments, imperial responsibilities and a sense of historical destiny as a major economic and political influence. This book charts how this role and self-image changed and how abruptly in 1945 the United States assumed Britain's mantle of world leader. Taylor provides an alternative interpretation of how the Cold War arose, and how the reordering of the global economic, political and strategic system in the post-war world came about. It is essential reading for political geographers, historians, international relations experts and political scientists.
