Computing all the zeros of an analytic function and their respective multiplicities, locating clusters of zeros and analytic fuctions, computing zeros and poles of meromorphic functions, and solving systems of analytic equations are problems in computational complex analysis that lead to a rich blend of mathematics and numerical analysis. This book treats these four problems in a unified way. It contains not only theoretical results (based on formal orthogonal polynomials or rational interpolation) but also numerical analysis and algorithmic aspects, implementation heuristics, and polished software (the package ZEAL) that is available via the CPC Program Library. Graduate studets and researchers in numerical mathematics will find this book very readable.
The impact of the embodied cognition thesis on the scientific study of film The embodied cognition thesis claims that cognitive functions cannot be understood without making reference to the interactions between the brain, the body, and the environment. The meaning of abstract concepts is grounded in concrete experiences. This book is the first edited volume to explore the impact of the embodied cognition thesis on the scientific study of film. A team of scholars analyse the main aspects of film (narrative, style, music, sound, time, the viewer, emotion, perception, ethics, the frame, etc.) from an embodied perspective. By combining insights from various disciplines such as cognitive film theory, conceptual metaphor theory, and cognitive neuroscience, they show how the process of meaning-making in film is embodied and how empathy and embodied simulation play a role in understanding the way in which the viewer interacts with the film. Foreword by Mark Johnson, Knight Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Department of Philosophy, University of Oregon. Contributors Warren Buckland (Oxford Brookes University), Juan Chattah (University of Miami), Maarten Coëgnarts (University of Antwerp), Adriano D’Aloia (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan), Michele Guerra (University of Parma), Miklós Kiss (University of Groningen), Peter Kravanja (KU Leuven), María J. This book focuses on recent advances in dental gold alloys and gold nanoparticles (GNPs) for biomedical applications. Dental gold alloys combine several highly desirable mechanical properties, such as high strength, ductility, and elasticity, with an extremely robust chemical stability in the mouth. Moreover, astonishing progress has been made in the use of GNPs as novel gold biomaterials that provide a multifunctional platform for cellular imaging, biosensing, and targeted drug delivery in tumour immunotherapy and photothermal therapy. Beginning with a comprehensive overview of the development and use of dental gold alloys, the book addresses the materials properties that are crucial for dental applications, focusing on aspects such as microstructure, chemical and mechanical stability, ageing, biocompatibility, and colour retention. The book then shifts focus to the use of GNPs in dental applications, delving into different techniques of GNP synthesis for specifically tailoring the size, shape, and stability of GNPs in biological media. In addition to these factors, it addresses how their exposure route, surface chemistry, as well as how the steric effects of their coating impact biodistribution and determine the level of GNP toxicity in the human body. Featuring topical literature reviews alongside up-to-date published experimental results, this book offers an attractive resource for practicing scientists and engineers working in the field of gold-based biomaterials.
This book presents a novel way to enable people, regardless of their scale of influence, to take responsibility for global environmental problems including climate change. It introduces a new framework called Planetary Accounting, which allows the Planetary Boundaries, non-negotiable limits for the environment, to be translated into limits for human activity. It shows how such limits can be broken down into chunks that can be managed at different levels (from individual and community, to business and sector levels, to cities and regions), and at any level of government. The book begins by summarising the science of climate change and introducing the notion of the Anthropocene – the “human age”. It highlights the importance of returning to and remaining within the Planetary Boundaries but shows that we can’t realistically do so unless we have a new approach to environmental accounting. The book then outlines how Planetary Accounting furnishes this new approach by combining sustainability science, change theory, and environmental accounting to create a scalable framework for environmental management that encourages systemic and individual change. The details of the science of and our human contribution to ten critical human pressures are then presented, and the book concludes with a guide for those seeking to apply Planetary Accounting in practice. Planetary Accounting could form the scientific underpinning of behaviour change programs, guide the development of policy and regulations, and provide both the basis for environmental laws, and the foundation of future global environmental agreements. It has been 50 years since the first views from space showed a blue planet alone in our solar system. This book is an historic opportunity to provide humanity for the first time with sufficient information to begin implementing Planetary Accounting.
This fascinating volume investigates the structure of eigenvectors and looks at the number of their sign graphs ("nodal domains"), Perron components, and graphs with extremal properties with respect to eigenvectors. The Rayleigh quotient and rearrangement of graphs form the main methodology. Eigenvectors of graph Laplacians may seem a surprising topic for a book, but the authors show that there are subtle differences between the properties of solutions of Schrödinger equations on manifolds on the one hand, and their discrete analogs on graphs.
Supply Chain Processes introduces readers to the view that genuine supply chain competitive advantage is achieved via supply chain excellence which in turn is underpinned by supply chain process excellence. The ultimate supply chain goal is to deliver the right product, of the right quality, in the right quantity, to the right place, at the right time and for the right cost. The author identifies four core supply chain processes – strategy, design, execution and people – to which the process improvement techniques explained can be applied to ensure superior supply chain performance. Key topics are addressed, including supply chain risk, resilience, sustainability, challenges confronting modern-day supply chains and developing an elegant supply chain design. Each chapter starts with a section that explores learning opportunities and is followed by detailed chapter content. Carefully explained examples are provided, as well as end of chapter case studies, review questions and written assignments. A full suite of teaching aids is also provided for lecturers and tutors. Providing both management expertise and technical skills, which are essential to decision-makers in the supply chain, this textbook should be essential reading for undergraduate and post-graduate students, post-experience students studying for professional qualifications, and operating supply chain leaders and supply chain professionals. Online resources include chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint slides, tutorial exercises, written assignments and a test bank of exam questions.
The basin of attraction of an equilibrium of an ordinary differential equation can be determined using a Lyapunov function. A new method to construct such a Lyapunov function using radial basis functions is presented in this volume intended for researchers and advanced students from both dynamical systems and radial basis functions. Besides an introduction to both areas and a detailed description of the method, it contains error estimates and many examples.
Constantin presents the Euler equations of ideal incompressible fluids and the blow-up problem for the Navier-Stokes equations of viscous fluids, describing major mathematical questions of turbulence theory. These are connected to the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg theory of singularities for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, explained in Gallavotti's lectures. Kazhikhov introduces the theory of strong approximation of weak limits via the method of averaging, applied to Navier-Stokes equations. Y. Meyer focuses on nonlinear evolution equations and related unexpected cancellation properties, either imposed on the initial condition, or satisfied by the solution itself, localized in space or in time variable. Ukai discusses the asymptotic analysis theory of fluid equations, the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya technique for the Boltzmann-Grad limit of the Newtonian equation, the multi-scale analysis, giving compressible and incompressible limits of the Boltzmann equation, and the analysis of their initial layers.
