The studies included in this selection - the opening two being published for the first time - are concerned with various aspects of the history of Christian Spain between the 6th century and the 14th. A recurrent theme is that of the invention of the past: of the manner in which, for reasons which have seemed good to them, at different times and places, from Toledo in the 1240s to Cambridge in the 1920s, men have sought to appropriate and recolonise that past. Three more technical articles on the subject of 13th-century papal diplomatic in a Spanish setting illustrate the related activity of the invention of the future as reflected in the activity of the agents or proctors and others whose services were retained in order to ensure that it was their employer's particular view of the present that prevailed. In enforcing EU competition law, the Commission employs a unique doctrine of parental antitrust liability: it imposes fines on the parent company of an infringing subsidiary in cases where the parent exercises decisive influence over the subsidiary's commercial policy. Critics of this contentious aspect of EU competition law believe that the doctrine is unfair, ineffective, obscure, disproportionate, contrary to due process, and based upon a dubious, if not extremely flimsy, justificatory foundation. Such criticism raises serious and unanswered questions about the legitimacy of the Commission's efforts to enforce competition law. Parental Liability in EU Competition Law: A Legitimacy-Focused Approach is the first monograph to be dedicated to this controversial topic. Written by Professor Peter Whelan, the book contends that, although the general concept of parental liability can be justified in principle, the current EU-level doctrine of parental antitrust liability in fact suffers from a distinct and problematic lack of legitimacy. More specifically, the said doctrine displays significant deficiencies with respect to effectiveness, fairness, and legality. Carbon analogs of carbohydrates, dubbed C-glycosides, have remained an important and interesting class of mimetics, be it in natural product synthesis, for pharmacological applications, as conformational probes, or for biological studies. C-Furanosides: Synthesis and Stereochemistry provides a much-needed overview of synthetic and stereochemical principles for C-furanosides: analogs of a 5-membered ring carbohydrate glycoside (furanoside), in which the anomeric oxygen has been replaced with a carbon. While our understanding of conformational behavior and of stereoselective synthesis in 6-membered ring compounds is quite good, our ability to predict the conformation of 5-membered ring compounds, or to predict the stereochemical outcome of a given reaction, remains anecdotal. This volume starts the updating of the information on organonickel chemistry, one of the most active areas of modern organometallic chemistry. It covers all mononuclear compounds containing one nickel-to-carbon bond. The main part is devoted to the family of planar NiII compounds, RNi(D)2X, which within 20 years has increased from about 250 to more than 1000 members. This research interest has been stimulated by the fact that many compounds insert various unsaturated species into the Ni-C bond to create new organonickel species. Moreover, these compounds are important as intermediates in many catalytic processes involving organic halides. Compounds containing h*2-bonded heteroalkene molecules including the C1 fragments CO2 and CS2, and related metallocyclic compounds are also emphasized in this volume. These types of compounds play an important role in a number of nickel-catalyzed co-oligomerization reactions involving unsaturated organic compounds. Most of the compounds are well-characterized by modern spectroscopic techniques. The various types of compounds are in most cases confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The author of these volumes, a member of the M lheim group, has made many contributions of his own and is eminently qualified to critically review this area of research.
