Hocken shows how these movements of the Holy Spirit, both outside the mainline churches and as renewal currents within the churches, can be understood as mutually challenging and as complementary. The similarities and the differences are significant. The Messianic Jewish movement possesses elements of both the new and the old. Addressing the issues of modernity and globalization, this book explores major phenomena in contemporary Christianity including the relationship between the new churches and entrepreneurial capitalism.

As the charismatic movement penetrated the Protestant churches and then impacted the Catholic Church, great hopes for Christian unity were aroused among many. These hopes peaked with the great Kansas City conference of 1977 and the "Pentecost over Europe" gathering in Strasbourg, France, in 1982. After these high points, the Renewal's unity dynamic weakened at the same time as the ecumenical movement was losing momentum. Dr. Hocken argues that the charismatic movement was always a grace for unity, and that this can be seen from how it began and spread. Its deep orientation to unity finds its foundation in the "end-times" significance of baptism in the Spirit poured out on Christians from so many traditions that reinforces the "one hope" for the coming of the Lord. They diverted streams and drained marshes, burned native vegetation and planted hedges and grasses, stocked farms with sheep and cattle and poured on fertilizer. Through various letter books, ledgers, diaries, and journals, this book reveals how the first European settlers learned about their new environment: talking to Maori and other Pakeha, observing weather patterns and the shifting populations of rabbits, reading newspapers, and going to lectures at the Mechanics' Institute. Peter Ross examines how John Calvin might assist Pentecostals in the development of a global Pentecostal theology by examining the views of each on pneumatology and the Christian's union with Christ. He conducts a conversation between the two within the contexts of the assurance of faith; providence and guidance; and justification--each an area in which the Spirit and the union are substantially involved for both parties. He also looks closely at Spirit release, showing that this Pentecostal distinctive can sit well as an extension from Calvin's thought. Ross shows that affinities exist between Pentecostals and Calvin in these contexts. These affinities clearly identify Calvin's thought as a rich resource for Pentecostals; one they should not hesitate to mine as they develop their own global theology.
