This book examines literary representations of human and non-human animality in British Romanticism. The book’s novel approach focuses on the role of aesthetic taste in the Romantic understanding of the animal. Concentrating on the discourses of the sublime, the beautiful, and the ugly, Heymans argues that the Romantics’ aesthetic views of animality influenced—and were influenced by—their moral, scientific, political, and theological judgment. The study reveals how feelings of environmental alienation and disgust played a positive moral role in animal rights poetry, why ugliness presented such a major problem for Romantic-period scientists and theologians, and how, in political writings, the violent yet awe-inspiring power of exotic species came to symbolize the beauty and terror of the French Revolution. Linking the works of Wordsworth, Blake, Coleridge, Byron, the Shelleys, Erasmus Darwin, and William Paley to the theories of Immanuel Kant and Edmund Burke, this book brings an original perspective to the fields of ecocriticism, animal studies, and literature and science studies.

The observation, in 1919 by A.S. Eddington and collaborators, of the gra- tational de?ection of light by the Sun proved one of the many predictions of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity: The Sun was the ?rst example of a gravitational lens. In 1936, Albert Einstein published an article in which he suggested - ing stars as gravitational lenses. A year later, Fritz Zwicky pointed out that galaxies would act as lenses much more likely than stars, and also gave a list of possible applications, as a means to determine the dark matter content of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. It was only in 1979 that the ?rst example of an extragalactic gravitational lens was provided by the observation of the distant quasar QSO 0957+0561, by D. Walsh, R.F. Carswell, and R.J. Weymann. A few years later, the ?rst lens showing images in the form of arcs was detected. The theory, observations, and applications of gravitational lensing cons- tute one of the most rapidly growing branches of astrophysics. The gravi- tional de?ection of light generated by mass concentrations along a light path producesmagni?cation,multiplicity,anddistortionofimages,anddelaysp- ton propagation from one line of sight relative to another. The huge amount of scienti?c work produced over the last decade on gravitational lensing has clearly revealed its already substantial and wide impact, and its potential for future astrophysical applications.

This book examines the content of a complex perfective anthropology beyond absolute, abstract, negative and minimalist readings. A rich sense of perfection is here to stay because of the ineradicable existential role of gradational estimation in terms of better and worse. The first section focuses on the connection between hermeneutics and perfectionism. The author claims that a hermeneutical conception of interpretation unavoidably implies a perfective scheme of better and worse, and that a contemporary perfectionism should be based exactly on a hermeneutical theory of interpretation. The second section introduces a differentiated language of perfection as positive. The author argues that we need a plurivocal list of kinds and levels of perfection as to be able to reach a higher sense of estimation. Human appraisal itself, so it turns out, can be undertaken in better and worse ways. The third section consolidates and extends the idea of a perfective anthropology. Here we are brought to a consideration of ourselves as organisms of a certain kind, of the personalised aspects of the human quest for perfection, of perfective experience in the context of concrete practices, and of the possibility of future perfection. The book ends with a chapter on environmental perfectionism, arguing that a benign human interpretation of non-human nature should include a careful application of the perfective concept of a life story to the realm of plants and animals. This application is meant to underscore the moral insight that we are not the only heroes of perfective being.

Concurrent systems abound in human experience but their fully adequate conceptualization as yet eludes our most able thinkers. The COSY (ConcurrentSystem) notation and theory was developed in the last decade as one of a number of mathematical approaches for conceptualizing and analyzing concurrent and reactive systems. The COSY approach extends theconventional notions of grammar and automaton from formal language and automata theory to collections of "synchronized" grammars and automata, permitting system specification and analysis of "true" concurrency without reduction to non-determinism. COSY theory is developed to a great level of detail and constitutes the first uniform and self-contained presentationof all results about COSY published in the past, as well as including many new results. COSY theory is used to analyze a sufficient number of typical problems involving concurrency, synchronization and scheduling, to allow the reader to apply the techniques presented tosimilar problems. It discusses German public opinion of their colony in Southern Africa and the debates the Herero and Nama rebellions engendered in The Reichstag.

They could become the are the most controversial people of our time; the most despised and the most revered, but not due to their own making but due to the groups they lead. Their life is a paradox in that they create whirlwinds when they are not living in complete obscurity. As individuals they are the dullest, but as social actors, they are the most outrageous. The point of this book is that social actions do not occur in a personal vacuum. People’s traits ad cognitive styles fill them until they coalesce into a recognizable form which is the shape of a public group. The decision for social action originates under the skin; only later is it exhibited as a public posture. This book reveals the person behind the social action. I will describe the psychological processes and feelings of a breed of individuals as they blend into a group that promotes and creates the dominant institutions in our society. The Compulsive Personality rules. We only try to emulate.
