Volume IV The Second Golden Age of the Viennese Symphony Brahms, Bruckner, Dvorák, Mahler, and Selected Contemporaries Although during the mid-19th century the geographic center of the symphony in the Germanic territories moved west and north from Vienna to Leipzig, during the last third of the century it returned to the old Austrian lands with the works of Brahms, Bruckner, Dvorák, and Mahler. After nearly a half century in hibernation, the sleeping Viennese giant awoke to what some viewed as a reincarnation of Beethoven with the first hearing of Brahms's Symphony No. 1, which was premiered at Vienna in December 1876. Even though Bruckner had composed some gigantic symphonies prior to Brahms's first contribution, their full impact was not felt until the composer's complete texts became available after World War II. Although Dvorák was often viewed as a nationalist composer, in his symphonic writing his primary influences were Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. For both Bruckner and Mahler, the symphony constituted the heart of their output; for Brahms and Dvorák, it occupied a less central place. Yet for all of them, the key figure of the past remained Beethoven. The symphonies of these four composers, together with the works of Goldmark, Zemlinsky, Schoenberg, Berg, Smetana, Fibich, Janácek, and others are treated in Volume IV, The Second Golden Age of the Viennese Symphony, covering the period from roughly 1860 to 1930.
The Advancea Kesearch Workshop on Superstrings was held on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder from July 27th through August 1, 1987. Since the work of Green and Schwartz in the summer of 1984, string theories have elicited tremendous amount of interest from both theoretical physicists and mathematicians. The objective of the Workshop was to bring together practitioners in the field to discuss the progress and problems, and possible directions of future research. There were ten talks of one hour each and twenty three talks of one-half hour each. The talks covered new formulations and technical developments. There were intense discussions both during and at the end of the lectures; 'further discussions continued during lunch and dinner. These proceedings contain all talks given at the Workshop except those by Victor Kac, Darwin Chang and Doron Gepner. The Workshop was sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which provided generous financial support enabling many young physicists from the U.S. and abroad to participate in the Workshop. Additional co-sponsors were the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of Colorado. The former offered further financial assistance and the latter furnished clerical and technical services and its campus facilities for the purpose of the organization and running of the Workshop. The International Organizing Committee consisted of John Ellis, Francois Englert, Peter G.O. Freund (co-director), K. T. Mahanthappa (co-director) and Abdus Salam.
Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Law - Civil / Private / Industrial / Labour, grade: A, University of Buea, language: English, abstract: The protection of workers from work-related accidents and diseases is a socio-economic right recognized and preserved by a variety of international and national human rights and industrial law instruments. The work exams the nature of work-related hazards from both the statutory and common law perspectives. In this vein, it critically examines the concepts of industrial accidents, occupational diseases, and personal injury for the purpose of protection. It is argued that damning consequences are bound to be felt by the worker and his dependents, the employer and the society at large, if workers are not protected from the risk of accidents and diseases inherent in their jobs. The research also discussed the common law defenses used by employers to escape liability towards injured workers; vital amongst which is the defense of volunti non fit injuria. The research there calls for the non-applicability of the said doctrine/defense within the employer/employee relationship. The research further examines the statutory and on law remedies available to worker who get injured or contract a disease while at work.
It’s early 1918, and after four brutal years, the fate of the Great War hangs in the balance. On the one hand, the fact that Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks have seized power in Russia – immediately suing for peace with Germany – means that no fewer than one million of the Kaiser’s soldiers can now be transferred from there to the Western Front. On the other, now that America has entered the war, it means that two million American soldiers are also on their way, to tip the scales of war to the Allies. The Germans, realising that their only hope is striking at the Allied lines first, do exactly that, and on the morning of 21 March 1918, the Kaiserschlacht, the Kaiser’s battle, is launched – the biggest set-piece battle the world has ever seen. Across a 45-mile front, no fewer than two million German soldiers hurl themselves at the Allied lines, with the specific intention of splitting the British and French forces, and driving all the way through to the town of Villers-Bretonneux, at which point their artillery will be able to rain down shells on the key train-hub town of Amiens, thus throttling the Allied supply lines. For nigh on two weeks, the plan works brilliantly, and the Germans are able to advance without check, as the exhausted British troops flee before them, together with tens of thousands of French refugees. In desperation, the British commander, General Douglas Haig, calls upon the Australian soldiers to stop the German advance, and save Villers-Bretonneux. If the Australians can hold this, the very gate to Amiens, then the Germans will not win the war. 'It's up to us, then,' one of the Diggers writes in his diary. Arriving at Villers-Bretonneux just in time, the Australians are indeed able to hold off the Germans, launching a vicious counterattack that hurls the Germans back the first time. And then, on Anzac Day 1918, when the town falls after all to the British defenders, it is again the Australians who are called on to save the day, the town, and the entire battle. Not for nothing does the primary school at Villers-Bretonneux have above every blackboard, to this day, 'N’oublions jamais, l’Australie.' Never forget Australia. The volume is concerned exclusively with all the binary species formed between the elements silicon and fluorine such as SiF, SiF2, SiF3, SiF4, and Sif62-. Most of the volume, i.e. 144 pages, is devoted to the description of the well known physical and chemical properties of the SiF4 as well as to its preparation. This is followed in length by the report on SiF2 with its interesting chemistry, along with a section on the diatomic radical SiF. Species with fivefold and sixfold coordination of silicon are exemplified by SiF5- and by the well known SiF62-. Interestingly, the detailed models for describing the bonding situation in both ions are still a matter of discussion. While for Si2F6 most of the basic data are known, information on the chemical and physical properties of the higher members of the acylic perfluorosilanes, SinF2n+2, is scarce. All available information on the unstable cyclic perfluorosilanes of composition (SiF2)n and some even more exotic species is also included.
