This biographical dictionary of some 3,000 photographers (and workers in related trades), active in a vast area of North America before 1866, is based on extensive research and enhanced by some 240 illustrations, most of which are published here for the first time. The territory covered extends from central Canada through Mexico and includes the United States from the Mississippi River west to, but not including, the Rocky Mountain states. Together, this volume and its predecessor, Pioneer Photographers of the Far West: A Biographical Dictionary, 1840-1865, comprise an exhaustive survey of early photographers in North America and Central America, excluding the eastern United States and eastern Canada. This work is distinguished by the large number of entries, by the appealing narratives that cover both professional and private lives of the subjects, and by the painstaking documentation. It will be an essential reference work for historians, libraries, and museums, as well as for collectors of and dealers in early American photography. In addition to photographers, the book includes photographic printers, retouchers, and colorists, and manufacturers and sellers of photographic apparatus and stock. Because creators of moving panoramas and optical amusements such as dioramas and magic lantern performances often fashioned their works after photographs, the people behind those exhibitions are also discussed.

A unique collection of concise but detailed information on 10,000 animals, plants, fungi and algae of the British Isles. Every species with an English common name is included. The compendium is in two parts. The first, smaller part, looks at various terms that people interested in natural history may come across. The second provides information on individual species or species groups, with entries on those with English (common) names, as well as selected families, orders, classes, etc. In the case of marine organisms, entries are given for intertidal and subtidal invertebrate species, and generally speaking for fish species that might be observed inshore. Indication is often given on distribution as well as whether a species is common, scarce or something in between. For some species a note is made of population size and trends. Comments are made where appropriate on etymology, both of the English name and the binomial. No other natural history dictionary or cognate publication relating to the British Isles is as comprehensive in taxonomic cover.

As scientific analysis of testable hypotheses has replaced the speculative approach to study of bone disease in recent and fossil amphibians and reptiles, the field has advanced from simply reporting observations to analyzing their implications. This process is predicated upon a reproducible data base which explains/diagnoses the nature of bony alterations and a secure review of the literature. Thereby hangs the rub. The herpetological literature are difficult to access (let alone read) and are scattered through many prominent and eclectic journals and in the lay literature. While older diagnoses often have not stood the test of time, the clarity of report descriptions usually allows confident identification of the underlying pathology.

The rich and varied epigraphic record of the city of Teos in northern Ionia has been dramatically enriched by recent excavations at the site, conducted since 2010 under the aegis of the University of Ankara. Over the past decade, the number of known inscriptions from Teos has increased from c. 300 to c. 500, and every season's campaign brings significant new finds. The most remarkable document discovered in recent years is a long honorific decree of Abdera for the dēmos of Teos, dating to the mid-160s BC (Chapter 1, Document 1). When Western Wyoming Land Management Company (LMC) plans a zinc and gold mine on a tract of 18,000 acres that it owns, Jim DeVries, a South African mining geologist specializing in the rare earths, goes undercover at LMC. DeVries has been sent by his former employer, Transvaal Mining, to find out what LMC is really after on Zinc Mountain. Transvaal suspects that LMC plans to exploit the rich deposits of ytterbium, a promising new mineral for semiconductor crystal lattices. While conducting studies on the zinc mine, Molly Berensen, the LMC environmental officer, stumbles onto a drilling fraud involving half a million dollars. The powers that be take steps to eliminate Molly. After a series of mysterious deaths, Molly and DeVries begin to zero in on a suspect. Who is the mastermind behind the nefarious actions?
