The neuronal cytoskeleton is a complex structure responsive to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Defined populations of neurons in the brains of patients with Alzheimer and several other neurodegenerative diseases contain abnormal filamentous accumulations which share elements with the cytoskeleton. Although there is a general consensus that these abnormal filaments do contain cytoskeletal elements, much debate remains regarding which cytoskeletal elements are incorporated and whether the cytoskeletal rearrangement is primary or secondary to other cellular changes. In this book these questions are addressed in a historical perspect ive in light of new data that allows the reinterpretation of previously reported results. Contributions are based on many of the major tech niques of modern biology including biochemistry, molecular biology, electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry. In the view of the editor, this volume is being written at a time when our understanding of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease is moving from predominantly descriptive to both analytical and mechanistic. I hope that this contribution will provide impetus to speed this transi tion. Players such as "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and Champ Osteen made their marks as "lintheads" in these semipro leagues. The fierce rivalries between competing mills and the impact of the teams on mill life are recounted. Appendices list club records and rosters for many of the teams from 1880 through 1955.

Focus on court activity by company allows for comparisons that emphasize the wide disparity in discipline within a regiment and brigade. By stressing the effectiveness of these deadly decisions as deterrents to others, this work maintains that an earlier and wider reliance on execution would have strengthened the Confederacy sufficiently to force a negotiated end to the war, thus saving many Confederate and Federal lives.

It is often said that California has four seasons: drought, flood, fire, and earthquakes. Certainly, the Golden State has experienced an abundance of these disasters in its history. The twenty-four chapters in this illustrated book highlights some of the major events that have occurred in the state. Some of these disasters occurred long ago, while others document recent events. Some are well-known, such as the snow-trapped Donner Party of 1846 and the unforgettable fire and earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Others are less familiar, such as the wreck of the paddle ship Brother Jonathan in 1865 or the fire at the Argonaut Mine in 1922. Included are disasters involving ships, planes, trains, and cars while others deal with tsunamis, dust storms, floods, and the collapses of bridges and dams. Some, like the shark attacks along the California coast, happen year after year and affect only a few. Other recurring disasters, like summer wildfires, claim dozens of lives and hundreds of structures, destroy wildlife, devastate miles of land, and even wipe out whole towns. The spectacular eruption of Lassen Peak has occurred only once. Although disasters usually bring loss, they sometimes bring us hard-won knowledge that may prevent future similar tragedies. Out of each disaster, acts of heroism, bravery, and compassion occur as individuals and groups attempt to aid victims in need. Illustrated with black & white archival photos. The nineteenth-century history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Max Perry Mueller argues, illuminates the role that religion played in forming the notion of three "original" American races—red, black, and white—for Mormons and others in the early American Republic. Recovering the voices of a handful of black and Native American Mormons who resolutely wrote themselves into the Mormon archive, Mueller threads together historical experience and Mormon scriptural interpretations. He finds that the Book of Mormon is key to understanding how early followers reflected but also departed from antebellum conceptions of race as biblically and biologically predetermined. Mormon theology and policy both challenged and reaffirmed the essentialist nature of the racialized American experience. The Book of Mormon presented its believers with a radical worldview, proclaiming that all schisms within the human family were anathematic to God's design. That said, church founders were not racial egalitarians. They promoted whiteness as an aspirational racial identity that nonwhites could achieve through conversion to Mormonism. Mueller also shows how, on a broader level, scripture and history may become mutually constituted. For the Mormons, that process shaped a religious movement in perpetual tension between its racialist and universalist impulses during an era before the concept of race was secularized.

NASCAR held its first Strictly Stock race in Charlotte on June 19, 1949, and, in the following decades, dozens of large and small tracks throughout the Carolinas were home to a major NASCAR event. Seven are one-race wonders, while others are as much racing legends as the sport's past champions.
