Hannah Arendt's most important contribution to political thought may be her well-known and often-cited notion of the "right to have rights." In this incisive and wide-ranging book, Peg Birmingham explores the theoretical and social foundations of Arendt's philosophy on human rights. Devoting special consideration to questions and issues surrounding Arendt's ideas of common humanity, human responsibility, and natality, Birmingham formulates a more complex view of how these basic concepts support Arendt's theory of human rights. Birmingham considers Arendt's key philosophical works along with her literary writings, especially those on Walter Benjamin and Franz Kafka, to reveal the extent of Arendt's commitment to humanity even as violence, horror, and pessimism overtook Europe during World War II and its aftermath. This current and lively book makes a significant contribution to philosophy, political science, and European intellectual history.

Anxiety Breakthrough breaks you out from the walls of Anxiety State Prison. First, the author inspires you with her own compelling story of imprisoning anxiety and panic. She helps you understand how and why you both became incarcerated, and then gives you her plan for escape; tools and strategies that will nourish your mind, body and spirit. Now, a psychotherapist specializing in anxiety, the authors down to earth, personable and empowering style jumps out of the pages making you feel she is working directly with you. Anxiety Breakthrough promotes a shift from a reactive, symptom-driven, disease approach to a proactive, practical, empowering, all natural approach and ensures that you wont return to your tiny cell anytime soon. Anxiety is part of the human fabric and a capacity that insured that our distant ancestors survived and is useful in modern life protecting us from danger and guiding our decisions. However, in modern times so much anxiety is without purpose and interferes with functioning and enjoyment of life. The author has written a book that describes anxiety in language that is easily understandable and presents a holistic approach to managing anxiety. This book could be of great benefit to the millions of people suffering from unneeded anxiety. Daniel Beck, LICSW Clinical Supervisor, Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy
She'd Lost Her Memory, Not Her Mind! Why can't Susan Hovis even remember her young son, Cody? Why is she haunted by a name, a shadow, called Tag? And why is her mother encouraging her to forget him, this half-remembered man? Well, thank God for Malorie, her grown-up daughter. And thank God for the people in Sweetbranch, Alabama, who rally around, especially at Christmas, when Susan most needs friends at her side. As for Tag, he'd obviously been far more than a friend. But what is he now?
The women who served in the Army, Navy, Woman Marines, and CoastGuard during World War II ventured into a 'man's world'to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and perform the military duties that brought the war to its end. They were radio operators, aircraft mechanics, storekeepers, nurses, physical therapists, pilots, Link trainer operators, parachute packers, photographers, intelligence analysts, transportationand motor pool operators, and teletypists. They served in Europe, NorthAfrica, the Far East, and on Japanese-occupied islands in the Pacific. Some were killed, others were taken POW. They were not on the peripheries of the war - many were 'in up to the top of their GI boots' fulfilling their assigned duties, and all were extremely proud to contributetheir skills and support. Here are 53 stories of the nearly 400,000 women veterans who served in World War II. PEG TROUT is a native of a small farming town in northwestern Ohio. I wrote this book to help families who have a child with a traumatic brain injury. My daughter was involved in an accident, the severity of which changed her life and the lives of our family forever. During her accident, subsequent treatment, and recovery I found professional systems to be lacking in information and support. Technical medical expertise to keep Tania alive was available, but there was a shortage of awareness for the family's pain, helplessness and frustration. Information and resources that could have helped us cope better were either not available or easily assessable. Here is how this book can help you: Part One is Tania's story and mine which will give you insight into our journey. Part Two gives details on issues many of us face and solutions that are available to help. Part Three is a resource listing of helpful books and web sites. When I think of my experience as a mother of a traumatically brain injured child, despite the sadness I feel, I realize that I can take this seemingly worthless experience and create some meaning by helping families and professionals better deal with brain trauma with brain trauma.
A collection of think pieces on a variety of topics: the environment, business, rights and responsibilities, social issues, ethics, education, sports, religion, and so on. Philosophy with an attitude. Because the unexamined life is dangerous. Note that this is an omnibus of the four Shit that Pisses Me Off volumes (minus the pieces that address sexism, which are anthologized in Sexist Shit that Pisses Me Off), plus over a hundred additional pieces, some of which were previously in The Philosophers’ Magazine, Philosophy Now, Humanist in Canada, and Victoria Times Colonist, some of which are previously unpublished. “An excellent collection of thought-provoking essays and short pieces. Just Think about It! (2nd edn) covers an amazingly wide range of topics that really made me think and reconsider my life, my choices, and our business-as-usual world. So much of what we are bombarded with on social media and mass media, so-called “op-eds,” are just a lot of noise; this author provides something very different. These are thought pieces, succinctly and logically presented for one’s consideration. I came away feeling like I’d had a meaningful interaction and I really enjoyed and appreciated it.” Karen Siddall “Just Think about It! (1st edn) covers a wide range of topics (too numerous to mention), and she has endeavoured to group them together by subject. Some are only a page long, others cover several pages and are more like essays, but they will all make you think!” James M. Fisher, The Miramichi Reader "Tittle's pieces are atypical of philosophical writing in the best ways: of interest to non-specialists, yet instructive and profound, yet entertaining." Ron Cooper, Professor of Philosophy "... a passionate, stylistically-engaging writer ..." George
The Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA), which became law in 1997, elicited a major shift in federal policy and thinking toward child welfare, emphasizing children’s safety, permanency, and well-being over preserving their biological ties at all costs. The first edition of this volume was the earliest major social work textbook to map the field of child welfare after ASFA’s passage, detailing the practices, policies, programs, and research affected by the legislation’s new attitude toward care. This second edition highlights the continuously changing child welfare climate in the U.S., including content on the Fostering Connections Act of 2008. Gerald P. Mallon and Peg McCartt Hess have updated the text throughout, drawing from real world case examples, using data obtained from the national Child and Family Services Reviews and emerging empirically based practices. They have also added chapters addressing child welfare workforce issues, supervision, and research and evaluation. Divided into four sections—child and adolescent well-being, child and adolescent safety, permanency for children and adolescents, and systemic issues within services, policies, and programs—this newly edited volume provides a current understanding of family support and child protective services, risk assessment, substance and sexual abuse issues, domestic violence issues, guardianship, reunification, kinship and foster family care, adoption, and transitional living programs. Recognized scholars, practitioners, and policy makers also discuss meaningful engagement with families, particularly Latino families; health care for children and youth, including mental health care; effective practices with LGBT youth and their families; placement stability; foster parent recruitment and retention; and the challenges of working with immigrant children, youth, and families.

The Lyons created a legacy for their children and grandchildren—a legacy of business success and family loyalty. But the Lyon Legacy is also a history of feuding, betrayal, deceptions. What is your name? Where did you come from? And where are you going? In this immersive novel set in 1840s Britain and France, these questions probe at the essence of what it means to be human. A wet nurse in a lively Scottish household goes by an assumed name, but longs to know the identity of her father. A quarryman furtively extricates a remarkable fossil from an island off the Northumberland coast and promptly smuggles it abroad to Paris. A sensational best-selling book that shatters cherished notions about the universe and everything in it triggers widespread argument and speculation—but its author’s name is a well-guarded secret. Another book, roundly ignored, neatly sets forth in an obscure appendix the principle that will become the centerpiece of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. All these threads—some historical, others fictional—converge and illuminate one another in unexpected ways in the climactic revelations of this brilliant story.
It's easy to accept God's will when all is well and life is going along smoothly. But what about the hard times? Here is a compassionate guide for yielding to God's sovereignty in times of need -- and remembering His promise to never leave us nor forsake us.
This book reflects on the problematic relation of ethics to politics in our 'democratic' era. If democracy implies the loss of an ultimate foundation for both ethics and political action, how can it be defended against its (ultra-nationalist, fundamentalist, ...) critics. Are there reasons for being a 'democrat' and what does it mean to be so or to act 'democratically'. Does this merely imply strict obedience to certain procedures that we call 'democratic' or does a democratic society ask for a democratic attitude or ethos. If so, how can this ethos be defined and grounded. All contributions to this volume articulate answers to these questions or to problems intrinsically related to them (i.e. what is the status of the law when it loses ultimate foundation). They do so by reflecting on the work of some important contemporary French philosophers: Lefort, Lyotard, Derrida, Levinas, Lacan, etc
