Winner, A Choice Outstanding Academic Book From 1964 until 1985, Brazil was ruled by a military regime that sanctioned the systematic use of torture in dealing with its political opponents. The catalog of what went on during that grim period was originally published in Portuguese as Brasil: Nunca Mais (Brazil: Never Again) in 1985. The volume was based on the official documentation kept by the very military that perpetrated the horrific acts. These extensive documents include military court proceedings of actual trials, secretly photocopied by lawyers associated with the Catholic Church and analyzed by a team of researchers. Their daring project—known as BNM for Brasil: Nunca Mais—compiled more than 2,700 pages of testimony by political prisoners documenting close to three hundred forms of torture. The BNM project proves conclusively that torture was an essential part of the military justice system and that judicial authorities were clearly aware of the use of torture to extract confessions. Still, it took more than a decade after the publication of Brasil: Nunca Mais for the armed forces to admit publicly that such torture had ever taken place. Torture in Brazil, the English version of the book re-edited here, serves as a timely reminder of the role of Brazil's military in past repression.
Computer Simulation is a very important tool in modern science, playing an intermediate role between theoretical models and experiments. In particular, an important fraction of the human knowledge about critical phenomena and phase transitions is due to computer simulations performed on statistical models. In this text, a class of statistical models that allows parallel processing using conventional hardware is treated using only personal computers. This class of systems is defined on a discrete lattice of points, and every point holds a Boolean variable that can assume only two values, 1 or 0, these can be associated to the logical values true and false respectively. The parallel processing is possible due to the Boolean operations AND, OR, XOR (for exclusive OR) and NOT provided by any digital computer.The strategy shown in the text consists of storing the state of the system bit by bit in computer words (each one with 16 bits in our personal computer) and processing them in parallel through fast bitwise logical operations. Using this strategy, various problems like the exact computation of the thermodynamic properties of small systems (for real space renormalization group calculations) and the Monte-Carlo simulation of uniform ferromagnets, spin glasses, and related models is treated. An interesting application of those calculations is an annealed square lattice spin glass where ferro and antiferromagnetic bonds are allowed to migrate along the lattice, used for testing an entropy-induced mechanism of charge pairing recently proposed for ceramic superconduc-tors. Some cellular automata rules are also treated by the same method. Fully connected neural networks with more than 108 synapses were simulated (the largest simulation up to now, as far as we know) and processed by our PC in a few minutes. Applications of large neural network simulations are also presented.

This book is the result of several years of research on children’s and youth telenovelas, which began during my doctoral studies and with previously disseminated productions in the form of conference papers, scientific articles, and book chapters, but always in the Portuguese language. More than a compilation of these materials, the purpose of this book is to rescue the presented concepts, while updating them, and reconsidering the analyses conducted by intersecting them. It also aims to contribute to the internationalization of the research by presenting it in a new language (English), going beyond the limits of the Portuguese-speaking world.
Fernando Pessoa wrote prolifically in many genres until his untimely death in 1935, and he has long been widely recognized as Portugal's most influential twentieth century writer. The publication of the Book of Disquiet in 1982, however, caused a seismic change in the appreciation of his work and its place in Modernism. In that great and vast collection of fragments, Pessoa firmly established his place among the canon of European modernists and radically questioned many of Modernity's assumptions. Alain Badiou, for example, has argued that philosophers are not yet able to assimilate Pessoa's thinking. Paulo de Medeiros's new study, one of the first to be dedicated to the Book of Disquiet, takes up that challenge, exploring the text's connections with photography, film, politics and textuality itself, and developing comparisons with D. H. Lawrence, Walter Benjamin, and Franz Kafka. The massive grasslands of Brazil -- known as the cerrados -- which cover roughly a quarter of its land surface and are among the most threatened regions in South America, have received little media attention. This book brings together leading researchers on the area to produce the first detailed account in English of the natural history and ecology of the cerrado/savanna ecosystem. Given their extent and threatened status, the richness of their flora and fauna, and the lack of familiarity with their unique ecology at the international level, the cerrados are badly in need of this important and timely work.
Design of Very High-Frequency Multirate Switched-Capacitor Circuits presents the theory and the corresponding CMOS implementation of the novel multirate sampled-data analog interpolation technique which has its great potential on very high-frequency analog frond-end filtering due to its inherent dual advantage of reducing the speed of data-converters and DSP core together with the specification relaxation of the post continuous-time filtering. This technique completely eliminates the traditional phenomenon of sampled-and-hold frequency-shaping at the lower input sampling rate. Also, in order to tackle physical IC imperfections at very high frequency, the state-of-the-art circuit design and layout techniques for high-speed Switched-Capacitor (SC) circuits are comprehensively discussed: -Optimum circuit architecture tradeoff analysis -Simple speed and power trade-off analysis of active elements -High-order filtering response accuracy with respect to capacitor-ratio mismatches -Time-interleaved effect with respect to gain and offset mismatch -Time-interleaved effect with respect to timing-skew and random jitter with non-uniformly holding -Stage noise analysis and allocation scheme -Substrate and supply noise reduction -Gain-and offset-compensation techniques -High-bandwidth low-power amplifier design and layout -Very low timing-skew multiphase generation Two tailor-made optimum design examples in CMOS are presented. The first one achieves a 3-stage 8-fold SC interpolating filter with 5.5MHz bandwidth and 108MHz output sampling rate for a NTSC/PAL CCIR 601 digital video at 3 V. Another is a 15-tap 57MHz SC FIR bandpass interpolating filter with 4-fold sampling rate increase to 320MHz and the first-time embedded frequency band up-translation for DDFS system at 2.5V. The corresponding chip prototype achieves so far the highest operating frequency, highest filter order and highest center frequency with highest dynamic range under the lowest supply voltage when compared to the previously reported high-frequency SC filters in CMOS.
