Typhoon," "earthquake," "explosion," "upheaval," are words connoting waste and destruction, to be sure. But remember there is a creative aspect to catastrophe which sweeps away the old and prepares the way for the new. Be that as it may, in describing the presidency of Duffy Artois the word "revolution" is simply inadequate. "Firestorm" might be a word used by members of the two-party machine that governed America before Artois. But in truth no single word suffices. Only a bookful of words might hope to capture the visionary reel of the Artois era. Hence "The Dangerous Dream." We can discover no writing nor record that predicted greatness for the ambitious and popular boy growing up in Los Angeles: growing first into a passable scholar, then into a criminal attorney, into a prosecutor, a district attorney, and climactically, in 1998, into the California governor's mansion. Young Duffy Artois seemed destined merely for worldly success. In 2002, as California governor, Artois bravely took all the blame for an abyssal budget deficit, even though there was plenty of blame to go around. After one 4-year term, he was narrowly defeated for reelection. For the next 5 years he was content to work behind the scenes as a consultant, speechwriter, campaign manager. He was content to be invisible. All the while, in the privacy of his heart, a critical mass was smoldering. Historians may quibble about whether the catharsis began during his term as governor or afterward. There is no quibble about the historical fact that by 2007, the year a man named Skipper came along and lighted the fuse, Artois had morphed into a walking, talking megaton bomb.

In Heritage and Hoop Skirts: How Natchez Created the Old South, author Paul Hardin Kapp reveals how the women of the Natchez Garden Club saved their city, created one of the first cultural tourism economies in the United States, changed the Mississippi landscape through historic preservation, and fashioned elements of the Lost Cause into an industry. Beginning with the first Natchez Spring Pilgrimage of Antebellum Homes in 1932, such women as Katherine Grafton Miller, Roane Fleming Byrnes, and Edith Wyatt Moore challenged the notion that smokestack industries were key to Natchez’s prosperity. These women developed a narrative of graceful living and aristocratic gentlepeople centered on grand but decaying mansions. In crafting this pageantry, they created a tourism magnet based on the antebellum architecture of Natchez. Through their determination and political guile, they enlisted New Deal programs, such as the WPA Writers’ Project and the Historic American Buildings Survey, to promote their version of the city. Their work did save numerous historic buildings and employed both white and African American workers during the Depression. Still, the transformation of Natchez into a tourist draw came at a racial cost and further marginalized African American Natchezians. By attending to the history of preservation in Natchez, Kapp draws on a rich archive of images, architectural documents, and popular culture to explore how meaning is assigned to place and how meaning evolves over time. In showing how and why the Natchez buildings of the “Old South” were first preserved, commercialized, and transformed into a brand, this volume makes a much-needed contribution to ongoing debates over the meaning attached to cultural patrimony.

As a young Air Force officer, Major General Paul Landers flew small Cessna O-1 aircrafts, called Bird Dogs, over the trees and rice paddies of the Mekong Delta as a forward air controller (FAC). His duty was to conduct reconnaissance and direct airstrikes in support of the only large US unit operating there: the Mobile Riverine Force (MRF). The MRF, combining 2d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division and Navy Task Force 117, fought along the many rivers and canals of the Delta, seeking to regain control of that quarter of Vietnam, where over half the population lived. After Tet 1968, when the MRF had driven the VC out of the major Delta cities, General Westmoreland praised the MRF, saying that “they saved the Delta.” Paul Landers was there. He flew more than 375 combat missions, directed hundreds of airstrikes, and helped rescue downed aircrew and save outposts under attack. This is his story.
