The idea for publishing these books on the mechanism of action and on the biosynthesis of antibiotics was born of frustration in our attempts to keep abreast of the literature. Gone were the years when we were able to keep a biblio graphy on antibiotics and feel confident that we could find everything that was being published on this subject. These fields of investigation were moving for ward so rapidly and were encompassing so wide a range of specialized areas in microbiology and chemistry that it was almost impossible to keep abreast of developments. In our naivete and enthusiasm, however, we were unaware that we were toying with an idea that might enmesh us, that we were creating an entity with a life of its own, that we were letting loose a Golom who instead of being our servant would be our master. That we set up ideals for these books is obvious; they would be current guides to developments and information in the areas of mechanism of action and bio synthesis of antibiotics. For almost every subject, we wished to enlist the aid of an investigator who himself had played a part in determining the nature of the phenomena that were being discussed. One concept for the books was that they include only antibiotics for which a definitive, well-documented mechanism of action or biosynthetic pathway was known.
This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Abelian Groups and Modules held at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland, from August 10 until August 14, 1998. The meeting brought together more than 50 researchers and graduate students from 14 countries around the world. In a series of eight invited survey talks, experts in the field presented several active areas of research, including:· Almost completely decomposable abelian groups, Butler groups and almost free groups nbsp;â the classification problem, and invariants of special classes of torsion-free abelian groups.· Totally projective groups, their automorphism groups and their group rings â questions about unique passage between these categories.· Radicals commuting with products.· The Ziegler spectra of Neumann regular rings and the class (semi-) groups of PrÃ1⁄4fer domains.· The Krull-Schmidt property for valuation domains.These main talks were accompanied by many other presentations of current research on abelian groups and modules. Methods from model theory, category theory, infinite combinatorics, representation theory, classical algebra and geometry were applied to the study of abelian groups and modules; conversely, results and methods from abelian group theory were applied to general module theory and non-commutative groups.All this is reflected in the 30 articles in this volume, which introduce the reader to an active and attractive part of algebra that over the years has gained much from its position at the crossroads of mathematics. Lively discussions at the conference influenced the final work on the presented papers, which convey some sense of the intellectual ferment they generated and stimulate the reader to consider and actively investigate the topics and problems contained therein.

This second edition of Design of Observational Studies is both an introduction to statistical inference in observational studies and a detailed discussion of the principles that guide the design of observational studies. An observational study is an empiric investigation of effects caused by treatments when randomized experimentation is unethical or infeasible. Observational studies are common in most fields that study the effects of treatments on people, including medicine, economics, epidemiology, education, psychology, political science and sociology. The quality and strength of evidence provided by an observational study is determined largely by its design. Design of Observational Studies is organized into five parts. Chapters 2, 3, and 5 of Part I cover concisely many of the ideas discussed in Rosenbaum’s Observational Studies (also published by Springer) but in a less technical fashion. The social sciences study knowing subjects and their interactions. A "cognitive turn", based on cognitive science, has the potential to enrich these sciences considerably. Cognitive economics belongs within this movement of the social sciences. It aims to take into account the cognitive processes of individuals in economic theory, both on the level of the agent and on the level of their dynamic interactions and the resulting collective phenomena. This book is a result of a three-year experiment in interdisciplinary cooperation in cognitive economics.
