The paucity of published material on the borders of New Guinea and the international significance of the Irian boundary led me to bring together the information I had gathered over the past few years. Ideally, a book of this kind should cover the subject in its total historical and geographical context. The aim of this work is more modest: it intends merely to throw some light on the birth and development of New Guinea's boundaries. With this purpose in mind, after an introductory chapter attention is given to the historical events leading up to the parti tion of New Guinea among three European powers. In subsequent chapters the development of the boundaries between the various parts of the island is discussed. It is realized that this approach may tend to convey the impression that each particular border is in some way unique. This, however, is not intended and it is hoped that the reader will recognize some of the common underlying themes and problems which are given attention in the introductory and concluding chapters. It was intended originally to present in a brief appendix those docu ments which define the borders. It soon appeared desirable to include also the unpublished records of more recent border conferences and relevant correspondence leading up to the actual treaties, exchange of notes, Orders in Council, or (as the case might be) lack of action.

The advances made in vascular biology in the last 25 years have considerably changed the perception that one could have of the endothelial cells. Once considered as a diffusion barrier preventing the access of the blood cells to the vascular matrix, the endothelium is now recognized as playing a major role in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation, and vascular tone, but also in immunology, inflammation, angiogenesis, and for serving as a metabolizing and an endocrine organ. -- from the preface Cardiovascular diseases, so prevalent in the Western world during the twentieth century, could well become the scourge of the twenty-first century in emerging countries as well as the West. Endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or release of contracting and relaxing factors is often evoked to explain the initiation of the cardiovascular pathology or its development and perpetuation. Two decades ago, when nitric oxide was demonstrated to mediate endothelium-dependent relaxations, the vascular world seemed convinced that nitric oxide was the ultimate and sole explanation for such relaxations. However not everyone agreed. EDHF: The Complete Story is the work of two leading researchers who did not accept that simple conclusion, but instead continued to search, along with others, for a deeper understanding of the ways in which endothelial cells communicate with the underlying smooth muscle to signal it to hyperpolarize. Locations of the books are given, as far as possible, as well as bibliographical sources. Many of these publications are pirate editions, mainly from France and Germany. Technical and historical introductions precede this bibliography, and several indexes and registers conclude this work. The titles show the areas in which Jesuits have been active, and indicate their influence in many fields. A similar work has never been attempted before.

It regards linguistic variation in its synchronic and diachronic dimensions as well as in its social contexts as important sources of insight for a better understanding of the design of linguistic systems and the ecology and evolution of language. Bonfiglio examines the ideological legacy of the metaphors "mother tongue" and "native speaker" by historicizing their linguistic development. The early nation states constructed the ideology of ethnolinguistic nationalism, a composite of language, identity, geography, and ethnicity that configured the national language as originating in the mother-infant relationship, as well as in local organic nature. These insular protectionist strategies generated the philologies of (early) modernity and their genetic and arboreal "families" of languages, and continue today to evoke folkloric notions that configure language ethnically. Scholarly recognition of the biological metaphors that racialize language will help to illuminate persisting gestures of ethnolinguistic discrimination.

With prevalence figures close to 0.2% at birth and rising to 0.35% during adolescence, hearing loss is the most frequent sensory impairment in childhood. This silent handicap has to be actively sought for without delay as it will seriously interfere with the development of speech, language, cognitive and socio-emotional behavior. Objective physiological techniques (evoked potentials, oto-acoustic emissions, tympanometry) combined according to the cross-check principle allow early diagnosis. Objective testing yields invaluable information about the mechanism of the loss and the contribution of disruption of the neural code to the handicap. Among the acquired causes, cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections plays a major role and may take elusive forms. Aminoglycoside ototoxicity has a genetic determinant. Meningitis can lead to rapid endocochlear ossification prompting for rapid cochlear implantation. Genetic causes account for more than 60% of congenital hearing loss, new genetic causes being discovered at an amazing rate. The high number of genetic entities and their huge heterogeneity among them requires guidelines for requesting genetic testing when desirable. Several syndromes prone to request neuropediatricians’ attention as an early diagnosis followed by specific treatment can considerably limit the ensuing handicap. Whatever the type of assistive device fitted (amplifying hearing aid or cochlear implant) and the importance of associated handicaps, a multidisciplinary rehabilitation combined with educated parental commitment is necessary for optimal results.
