Heidegger S Way Of Thinking Has Left A Rich Legacy For Post-Modern Philosophers, Particularly For Jacques Derrida Who Has Greatly Influenced Philosophy And Literature In The Modern Times.Derrida, Like His Mentor Heidegger, Understands That In The Western Philosophy, The Meaning Of Being Has Been Determined By Metaphysics Of Presence. However, Unlike Heidegger, Derrida Does Not Begin His Philosophical Career With A Question On Being. Nor Does He Take Up Philosophical Positions Traditional Or Otherwise. The Purpose Of The Present Study Is The Critical Evaluation Of Derrida S Claim That He Deconstructed One Of Heidegger S Most Important Essays The Origin Of The Work Of Art By Which He Tries To Overcome The Metaphysics Of Presence. The Book Presents An In-Depth Analysis Of Heidegger S Question Of The Meaning Of Being, And Derrida S Critique Of Western Logocentrism And His Philosophy Of Deconstruction. It Delves Into The Origin Of The Truth Of The Work Of Art Studying The Essence Of Thing, Equipment And Work Of Art, As Philosophised By Heidegger. It Discusses Truth As The Strife, Taking Originary Strife As The Essence Of The Meaning Of Being. It Also Includes Derrida S Criticism Of The Restitution Of The Truth Of The Work Of Art, And An Evaluation Of The Differential Structure Of The Truth Of The Painting As A Work Of Art. A Comparative Study Of The Philosophies Of Heidegger And Derrida Has Been Given Under Non-Originary Origin Of Truth And Difference As The Origin .References Have Been Given At The End Of Each Chapter To Facilitate Easy Understanding Of The Concepts Discussed In The Text. Popular culture often champions freedom as the fundamentally American way of life and celebrates the virtues of independence and self-reliance. But film and television have also explored the tension between freedom and other core values, such as order and political stability. What may look like healthy, productive, and creative freedom from one point of view may look like chaos, anarchy, and a source of destructive conflict from another. Film and television continually pose the question: Can Americans deal with their problems on their own, or must they rely on political elites to manage their lives? In this groundbreaking work, Paul A. Cantor explores the ways in which television shows such as Star Trek, The X-Files, South Park, and Deadwood and films such as The Aviator and Mars Attacks! have portrayed both top-down and bottom-up models of order. Drawing on the works of John Locke, Adam Smith, Alexis de Tocqueville, and other proponents of freedom, Cantor contrasts the classical liberal vision of America -- particularly its emphasis on the virtues of spontaneous order -- with the Marxist understanding of the "culture industry" and the Hobbesian model of absolute state control. The Invisible Hand in Popular Culture concludes with a discussion of the impact of 9/11 on film and television, and the new anxieties emerging in contemporary alien-invasion narratives: the fear of a global technocracy that seeks to destroy the nuclear family, religious faith, local government, and other traditional bulwarks against the absolute state.
This work is an engaging exploration of the process of historical research, following historians as they search for solutions to the greatest mysteries of all time. Award-winning author Paul Aron takes readers on a journey through great historical mysteries through the ages. Entertaining in themselves, the stories also show that history is not merely living, but lively. The reader who comes to the book thinking history is boring will leave with a changed outlook with regard to both the subject matter and the process of writing history. Each chapter is a carefully and thoroughly researched presentation not of popularized accounts but of valid historical scholarship. Chronologically arranged, the essays show the historical process in action. For each disputed historical point, theories arise, become standard wisdom, and then are revised as additional information becomes available. This book reveals the mechanics of that process, including spirited debate, swashbuckling archaeology, and the application of modern science to ancient questions.
This book establishes a new theoretical and practical framework for multimodal disciplinary literacy (MDL) fused with the subject-specific science pedagogies of senior high school biology, chemistry and physics. It builds a compatible alignment of multiple representation and representation construction approaches to science pedagogy with the social semiotic, systemic functional linguistic-based approaches to explicit teaching of disciplinary literacy. The early part of the book explicates the transdisciplinary negotiated theoretical underpinning of the MDL framework, followed by the research-informed repertoire of learning experiences that are then articulated into a comprehensive framework of options for the planning of classroom work. Practical adoption and adaptation of the framework in biology, chemistry and physics classrooms are detailed in separate chapters. The latter chapters indicate the impact of the collaborative research on teachers' professional learning and students’ multimodal disciplinary literacy engagement, concluding with proposals for accommodating emerging developments in MDL in an ever-changing digital communication world. The MDL framework is designed to enable teachers to develop all students' disciplinary literacy competencies. This book will be of interest to researchers, teacher educators and postgraduate students in the field of science education. It will also have appeal to those in literacy education and social semiotics. In this engaging volume, Capetz argues that Protestants have largely ignored Luther’s heritage when it comes to thinking about biblical authority and instead have followed Calvin’s biblicism, leading to many intellectual and moral problems in the face of a fully historical-critical understanding of the Bible in our time. After prefacing the book with a personal story that illustrates what is at stake in this question for the church’s pastoral ministry, he examines in detail the debate between Barth—an heir of Calvin—and Bultmann—a Lutheran—regarding Sachkritik or “content criticism” of Scripture since their debate serves to clarify the central issue facing Protestants today. He then traces their debate back to the Reformation itself to show how the difference between Luther and Calvin presented Protestants from the outset with two conflicting models of biblical authority. He then reflects on how this question of the proper understanding of biblical authority manifests itself in the debates over sexual ethics that have plagued mainline denominations for the past four decades. And he concludes by arguing that Luther’s heritage provides Protestants with a viable way to engage in a robust theological interpretation of the Bible that does not violate what historical criticism has taught us about it.
From journalist Paul Kix, the riveting story, never before fully told, of the 1963 Birmingham Campaign—ten weeks that would shape the course of the Civil Rights Movement and the future of America. It’s one of the iconic photographs of American history: A Black teenager, a policeman and his lunging German Shepherd. Birmingham, Alabama, May of 1963. In May of 2020, as reporter Paul Kix stared at a different photo–that of a Minneapolis police officer suffocating George Floyd–he kept returning to the other photo taken half a century earlier, haunted by its echoes. What, Kix wondered, was the full legacy of the Birmingham photo? And of the campaign it stemmed from? In You Have To Be Prepared To Die Before You Can Begin To Live, Paul Kix takes the reader behind the scenes as he tells the story of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s pivotal 10 week campaign in 1963 to end segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. At the same time, he also provides a window into the minds of the four extraordinary men who led the campaign—Martin Luther King, Jr., Wyatt Walker, Fred Shuttlesworth, and James Bevel. With page-turning prose that read like a thriller, Kix’s book is the first to zero in on the ten weeks of Project C, as it was known—its specific history and its echoes sounding throughout our culture now. It’s about Where It All Began, for sure, but it’s also the key to understanding Where We Are Now and Where We Will Be. As the fight for equality continues on many fronts, Project C is crucial to our understanding of our own time and the impact that strategic activism can have.
A man's obsession with a silent-film star sends him on a journey into a shadow world of lies, illusions, and unexpected love Six months after losing his wife and two young sons in an airplane crash, Vermont professor David Zimmer spends his waking hours mired in a blur of alcoholic grief and self-pity. Then, watching television one night, he stumbles upon a clip from a lost silent film by comedian Hector Mann. Zimmer's interest is piqued, and he soon finds himself embarking on a journey around the world to research a book on this mysterious figure, who vanished from sight in 1929 and has been presumed dead for sixty years. When the book is published the following year, a letter turns up in Zimmer's mailbox bearing a return address from a small town in New Mexico-supposedly written by Hector's wife. "Hector has read your book and would like to meet you. Are you interested in paying us a visit?" Is the letter a hoax, or is Hector Mann still alive? Torn between doubt and belief, Zimmer hesitates, until one night a strange woman appears on his doorstep and makes the decision for him, changing his life forever. This stunning novel plunges the reader into a universe in which the comic and the tragic, the real and the imagined, the violent and the tender dissolve into one another. With The Book of Illusions, one of America's most powerful and original writers has written his richest, most emotionally charged work yet.
Dominique Cantrell, First Citizen of America is the second of three general/science fiction novels concerned with the future of American society. The stability of our representative democracy is taken for granted by most Americans. And yet, a careful study of history suggests that economic, social, and political forces at work in contemporary America represent an internal threat to the survival of the greatest democratic republic in human history. The novels comprising this trilogy are concerned with these forces and serve as cautionary tales. The Certification of America, Volume I in the series, suggested that the historically unprecedented polarization of wealth that is happening in the United States today could progress to class warfare and the establishment of a plutocracy. Dominique Cantrell, First Citizen of America raises the even more disturbing possibility that our treasured liberty could be lost to dictatorship and tyranny. Lincoln warned that if the American Republic is destroyed, we the people will be responsible. Reform is possible. Steps could be taken to prevent the events described in these novels from happening. As Nevil Shute suggested in On the Beach, an apocalyptic story about nuclear holocaust, there is still time.
Over the past decade, the integration of psychology and fine art has sparked growing academic interest among researchers of these disciplines. The author, both a psychologist and artist, offers up a unique merger and perspective of these fields. Through the production of fine art, which is directly informed by neuroscientific and optical processes, this volume aims to fill a gap in the literature and understanding of the creation and perception of the grid image created as a work of art. The grid image is employed (for reasons discussed in the text) to illustrate more general processes associated with the integration of vision, visual distortion, and painting. Existing at the intersection of perceptual neuroscience, psychology, fine art and art history, this volume concerns the act of painting and the process of looking. More specifically, the book examines vision and the effects of visual impairment and how these can be interpreted through painting within a theoretical framework of visual neuroscience.
This is a comprehensive introduction to literary stylistics offering an accessible overview of stylistic, with activities, study questions, sample analyses, commentaries and key readings - all in the same volume.
Offering an insightful analysis of North Carolina political trends and personalities, Paul Luebke moves beyond the usual labels of Republican and Democrat, conservative and liberal. In Tar Heel Politics 2000, he argues that North Carolina's real political battle is between two factions of the state's political and economic elite: modernizers and traditionalists. Modernizers draw their strength from the bankers, developers, news media, and other urban interests that support growth, he says. Traditionalists, in contrast, are rooted in small-town North Carolina and fundamentalist Protestantism, tied to agriculture and low-wage industries and threatened by growth and social change. Both modernizers and traditionalists are linked with politicians who represent their interests. An updated and revised version of Luebke's Tar Heel Politics: Myths and Realities (1990), Tar Heel Politics 2000 highlights the resurgence of the southern Republican Party for the first time in a century and discusses a number of significant changes that have occurred over the last decade. These include the institutionalization of a viable two-party system in the General Assembly, the further shift of native-born whites throughout the South into the Republican voting column, and ideological conflict in North Carolina that parallels to some extent the post-1994 battles between the Republican Congress and the Clinton White House. In addition, the book provides a detailed analysis of the political appeal of Senator Jesse Helms and draws on Luebke's insights as a member of the North Carolina State House since 1991.

As the definitive textbook on Kolmogorov complexity, this comprehensive and self-contained work is an invaluable resource for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers in all fields of science.
The String People is a collection of twenty-eight unforgettable short stories drawn from Dr. Anthony Paul Sterling’s imagination, mixed with other tales of the author’s life experiences. The title of the book and the first story “The String People” came from “when I was very young. My brother and I had only matches to make people that we played with. We were poor and couldn’t afford real toys. These string people became soldiers, cowboys, etc.” From the short story “My Bald Head:” “Early in life, at age 5 or 6, I told my Grandma Cheecha (Francis), who spoke only Sicilian, that I wanted to be unna Doctura, so I could listen to her heart and give her injections of insulin. She would laugh and hug me. I never forgot this woman who got off a boat from Sicily with her husband Paul and 22 children … The next major influence came when I arrived on the children’s cancer unit. What affected me was the number of bald heads seen in almost every bed; this meant that all of them had cancer and were on chemotherapy. I never got over this; I prayed, cried, and eventually shaved my head.”
Combining the art of storytelling with biography, Church history, and Catholic teaching and belief, this collection shows how real people lived the eight beatitudes and seven sacraments, revealing the richness of the Christian life and offering inspirational models of the faith.
Paul Mendes-Flohr is emerging as the leading Jewish intellectual historian of the present generation. In particular, he is responsible for a significant amount of the important and pertinent scholarship in the field of German-Jewish intellectual history. No one else is quite as intimately knowledgeable with this material, the ambiguous legacy of one of the most inventive and poignant episodes of creativity in the life of the Diaspora. Divided Passions is a collection of published and unpublished essays and articles by Paul Mendes-Flohr from the past decade. In a manner that underscores their continued relevance and significance, Mendes-Flohr writes about the problems that Buber, Rosenzweig, Bloch, Simon, Scholem and others tried to crystallize and resolve. Mendes-Flohr moves with effortless authority among the disciplines of theology, philosophy, literature, history, and sociology. Fitted with these interdisciplinary resources, he enriches his treatment of themes and figures in ways that exceed the scope, to say nothing of the execution, found in other literature. The book conveys a rare metaphysical depth, for questions of faith, identity, and Dasein explored by the intellectual figures of the past are also personal ones for the author as well. Mendes-Flohr's exceptional ability to keep this body of work alive and available provides an outstanding source of commentary on the subjects that dominate the agenda of modern Jewish studies.
