Interest in visualization design has increased in recent years. While there is a large body of existing work from which visualization designers can draw, much of the past research has focused on developing new tools and techniques that are aimed at specific contexts. Less focus has been placed on developing holistic frameworks, models, and theories that can guide visualization design at a general level—a level that transcends domains, data types, users, and other contextual factors. In addition, little emphasis has been placed on the thinking processes of designers, including the concepts that designers use, while they are engaged in a visualization design activity. In this book we present a general, holistic framework that is intended to support visualization design for human-information interaction. The framework is composed of a number of conceptual elements that can aid in design thinking. The core of the framework is a pattern language—consisting of a set of 14 basic, abstract patterns—and a simple syntax for describing how the patterns are blended. We also present a design process, made up of four main stages, for creating static or interactive visualizations. The 4-stage design process places the patterns at the core of designers’ thinking, and employs a number of conceptual tools that help designers think systematically about creating visualizations based on the information they intend to represent. Although the framework can be used to design static visualizations for simple tasks, its real utility can be found when designing visualizations with interactive possibilities in mind—in other words, designing to support a human-information interactive discourse. This is especially true in contexts where interactive visualizations need to support complex tasks and activities involving large and complex information spaces. The framework is intended to be general and can thus be used to design visualizations for diverse domains, users, information spaces, and tasks in different fields such as business intelligence, health and medical informatics, digital libraries, journalism, education, scientific discovery, and others. Drawing from research in multiple disciplines, we introduce novel concepts and terms that can positively contribute to visualization design practice and education, and will hopefully stimulate further research in this area.

This book opens from the viewpoint of a four year old child who sees his father leave to fight in World War II and how it affects him. After the war our family moves into a new subdivision made up of all manner of WW II vets. Our house neighbored a five acre dairy farm. When the farm owner dies, the widow makes a bad decision that causes an invasion of rats. After a battle with the rats, the widow begins boarding horses which we were allowed to ride in exchange for caring for them. Our family fell into hard times in the mid-50's, the house was sold, and a move took place to a rural town (Arnold, Mo). The move occurred at a time which placed the author in a unique historical event, the graduation of Fox High School's very first senior class. After Graduation the author served three years in the U.S. Army, twenty six months of it in Germany. He was in Germany when the Berlin Wall was built It was also while the author was in Germany that the he received Jesus Christ as Savior. The papers are organized in topical sections on simulation of multi-agent systems, techniques and technologies, methodology and modeling, social dynamics, and application.
Unlike humans, computers generally do not take their peers in communication into account. Adding to this the increasing complexity of information systems, the need for adaptive personalisation is there. In this thesis we look at adaptive systems from the perspective of interactive systems. As most systems are, or can be seen as, interactive systems this should pose no problem. In interactive systems users cause events. These events can be passed on to an adaptation system to maintain a user model. The events also cause the interactive system to react. These reactions may be parameterised by the user model. In this thesis the following research questions are addressed: * How can adaptive personalisation be integrated into user adaptive systems? * How can adaptive personalisation be evaluated? To answer these questions it is essential to first provide a model of user adaptive systems. We introduce the Generic Adaptivity Model (GAM). The GAM divides the system into four layers: the application layer, the interface layer, the reasoning layer and the user model layer. It is important to notice that the reasoning layer consists of two reasoning components: the push adaptation component and the pull adaptation component. The push adaptation component is responsible for transforming user events into user model updates. As such it maintains the user model and the reasoning happens when users perform events. It is not necessary that these updates have been completed for the application to react to the user events. The pull adaptation component is responsible to using the user model to answer questions about the user that influence the system reaction to the user. As such this is computed at the moment a reaction is required and is more time critical than push reasoning. The behaviour of an adaptation component largely standard. As such it makes sense to create an adaptation engine that can be used in conjunction with an adaptation description to implement the adaptation component. The adaptation description then describes, by means of a script language, the push and pull reasoning to be performed as well as the events and questions to be recognised. Related elements in an adaptation model can be grouped together into an adaptation element. Together all adaptation elements in an adaptation model form an adaptation graph. This dependency graph can be used to visualise an adaptation model. In evaluating adaptation models the final evaluation involves testing with users. There are however two other evaluation layers that are less costly. The first evaluation layer involves a rough evaluation on the kind of reasoning used (push or pull). The second layer performs a detailed structural analysis of an adaptation model. The evaluation layers work on a number of dimensions. These dimensions are: predictability, adaptability, supportability, control, speed, extensibility, model size, privacy, concurrency and prediction quality. In the structural evaluation level a number of indicators are used for each dimension. Looking at the GAM it has a number of benefits: * It will allow different applications to cooperatively maintain properties by using common names and merging adaptation models. * It has strong capabilities for ensuring privacy and user control over the user models. * By cooperative modelling more information be used to have more effective personalisations. * The model is very generic and does not prescribe reasoning models. As such it is broadly applicable. * The model coexists well with the evaluation framework and does not violate any dimension. To answer the question how to integrate adaptive personalisation we introduce a seven stage method for creating adaptation models. In the first step the application is analysed. In the second step possible personalisation opportunities are determined. In the third step questions about the user are found. In the fourth step the user properties are determined. The fifth step determines the events needed to maintain the user model. The sixth step combines the results and cleans out infeasible options. Finally the seventh step evaluates the options to select only the best opportunities for adaptive personalisation.
Speed in acquiring the knowledge and skills to perform tasks is crucial. Yet, it still ordinarily takes many years to achieve high proficiency in countless jobs and professions, in government, business, industry, and throughout the private sector. There would be great advantages if regimens of training could be established that could accelerate the achievement of high levels of proficiency. This book discusses the construct of ‘accelerated learning.’ It includes a review of the research literature on learning acquisition and retention, focus on establishing what works, and why. This includes several demonstrations of accelerated learning, with specific ideas, plans and roadmaps for doing so. The impetus for the book was a tasking from the Defense Science and Technology Advisory Group, which is the top level Science and Technology policy-making panel in the Department of Defense. Most of the current literature on healthcare operations management is focused on importing principles and methods from manufacturing. The evidence of success is scattered and nowhere near what has been achieved in other industries. This book develops the idea that the logic of production, and production systems in healthcare is significantly different. A line of thing that acknowledges the ingenious characteristics of health service production is developed. This book builds on a managerial segmentation of healthcare based on fundamental demand-supply constellations. Demand can be classified with the variables urgency, severity, and randomness. Supply is constrained by medical technology (accuracy of diagnostics, efficacy of therapies), patient health behavior (co-creation of health), and resource availability. Out of this emerge seven demand-supply-based operational types (DSO): prevention, emergencies, one-visit, electives, cure, care, and projects. Each of these have distinct managerial characteristics, such as time-perspective, level of co-creation, value proposition, revenue structure, productivity and other key performance indicators (KPI). The DSOs can be envisioned as platforms upon which clinical modules are attached. For example, any Emergency Department (ED) must be managed to deal with prioritization, time-windows, agitated patients, the necessity to save and stabilize, and variability in demand. Specific clinical assets and skill-sets are required for, say, massive trauma, strokes, cardiac events, or poisoning. While representing different specialties of clinical medicine they, when applied in the emergency – context, must conform to the demand-supply-based operating logic. A basic assumption in this book is that the perceived complexity of healthcare arises from the conflicting demands of the DSO and the clinical realms.
