The seven species of swans are an easily and universally recognized group of waterfowl, which have historically played important roles in the folklore, myths and legends in many cultures. Among the largest of all flying birds, they have been used as symbols of royalty, grace and beauty, and largely for these reasons swans have only rarely been considered acceptable as targets for sport hunting. Swans occur on all continents but Africa, though most species are found in the temperate and arctic zones of North America and Eurasia. Swans are a long-lived species and are among the most strongly monogamous of birds, having prolonged pair and family bonds that influence their flocking and social behavior, and contribute to the overall high degree of human interest in them. This volume describes their distributions, ecology, social behavior, and breeding biology. Included are nine distribution maps, 19 drawings, 23 photographs by the author, and a bibliography of nearly 700 references.

But on her way to The Hall, where she was to be trained, Kale runs into danger. Rescued by a small band of Paladin’s servants, Kale is turned from her destination. Feeling afraid and unprepared, Kale embarks on a perilous quest to find the meech dragon egg stolen by the foul Wizard Risto. Weaving together memorable characters, daring adventure, and a core of eternal truth, Dragonspell--the first book in the Dragon Keepers Chronicles--is a finely crafted and welcome addition to the corpus of fantasy fiction.
Building on recent developments in biblical studies, this book introduces the prophetic literature of the Old Testament against the background of today's postmodern context and crisis of meaning. Pulsating with anxiety over the empire--Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian--the prophet corpus is a disturbing cultural expression of lament and chaos. Danger, disjunction, and disaster bubble beneath the surface of virtually every prophetic text. Sometimes in denial, sometimes in despair, and sometimes in defiance, the readers of this literature find themselves living at the edge of time, immediately before, during, or after the collapse of longstanding symbolic, cultural, and geo-political structures. These written prophecies not only reflect the social location of trauma, but are also a complex response. More specifically, prophetic texts are thick meaning-making maps, tapestries of hope that help at-risk communities survive.
From the author of the bestselling novel The Shack and the New York Times bestsellers Cross Roads and Eve comes a compelling, conversational exploration of twenty-eight assumptions about God—assumptions that just might be keeping us from experiencing His unconditional, all-encompassing love. In his wildly popular novels, Wm. Paul Young portrayed the Triune God in ways that challenged our thinking—sometimes upending long-held beliefs, but always centered in the eternal, all-encompassing nature of God’s love. Now, in Wm. Paul Young’s first nonfiction book, he invites us to revisit our assumptions about God—this time using the Bible, theological discussion, and personal anecdotes. Paul encourages us to think through beliefs we’ve presumed to be true and consider whether some might actually be false. Expounding on the compassion fans felt from the “Papa” portrayed in The Shack—now a major film starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer—Paul encourages you to think anew about important issues including sin, religion, hell, politics, identity, creation, human rights, and helping us discover God’s deep and abiding love.
A novel based on the prophecy of the Bible concerning the end of days. While fiction, the prophetic events are as close to the prophecies foretold from the pages of the Bible as possible. The lens is based on the current geopolitical fervor of the middle east.

The Pauline Corpus in Early Christianity: Its Formation, Publication, and Circulation offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging examination of the canonical development of the collection of writings associated with the Apostle Paul. The volume considers a number of clues from the New Testament writings, ancient literary conventions related to the composition and collection of letters, and a variety of early witnesses to the early state of the corpus such as biblical manuscripts, canonical lists, and the testimony of writers. As a conclusion to these inquiries, Laird argues that at least three major archetypal editions of the Pauline corpus--those containing 10, 13, and 14 letters--appear to have been collected and edited as early as the first century. These major archetypal editions, Laird concludes, circulated simultaneously for many years until editions containing 14 letters became nearly universally recognized by the fourth century. The volume serves as a valuable resource of information for those engaged in the study of the early state of the New Testament canon and offers a fresh perspective on the process that led to the formation of the Pauline corpus.

In Compassionate Leadership, Ted Engstrom and Paul Cedar bring their considerable experience to bear on the issues facing young leaders of today. Instead of discussing power, management, and organization, their advice involves being generous, believing in people, and helping to meet needs, encouraging friends, getting excited about the good things that happen to others, and helping others in their walk with the Lord. Jesus told us that to become great, we must be compassionate servants. Here's how.

Leaders are unique individuals. They seem to have the innate ability to dream big, craft a vision, rally followers, and create change. While it’s true that leaders think and act differently than the average person, the truth is that these distinctions all have a surprisingly simple origin: their words. If the words we use affect...
The context of the story begins with an overview of the familys heritage of both parents which provides the reader with the character of their ancestors that rightly prepared them for having the moral and insightful capabilities they faced in caring for their daughter named Joanna. From the first chapter, the story tells of her critical birth process which left her seriously injured, grievously impacting her own life but also strongly affecting her immediate family as well. Her first five years and her schooling away from home for three years are presented. When she became eight years old she was transferred to an Institute where she could develop skills in hope of discovering a more rounded promise toward achieving a life worth living. Through training, hard work and perseverance she is able to reach the capability of living independently and working in a professional dental office. (No doubt aided because she has been blessed by having a prodigious memory in most all activities.) While her effort was a significant achievement, it demanded enormous concentration and most surely caused emotional and medical problems which she overcame only through Gods providential care to live in a normal world which none of her early physicians could ever have imagined. After working for some thirty five years she chose to quit and has since come to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. She also enjoys being a volunteer in helping the needy which is ironic since she has depended on others for so much in her own life. On the personal side, this young woman delights in being with her family and her company has always been equally meaningful for both her sisters and Dad . Their encouragement has kept her growing in understanding to believe in herself and continually improve in most everything she does. She visits them in New York City, Tidewater Virginia and central Pennsylvania and rejoices in being with her family knowing that she is indeed much loved.
A provocative challenge for men to discover and exercise masculine faith, expressed through Thumos--the Greek word "courage," leading to greater power, purpose, and integrity.

The changes and divisions on the left over the Israel-Palestine conflict forms the central theme of this archive based study. While the Labour Party’s supported establishing a Jewish state in Palestine, as a modernising force, the communist movement opposed it, on the grounds that it facilitated imperial influence in the Middle East. In 1947, however, the British Communist Party rallied to the Zionist cause, leaving the Palestinian cause with no effective protagonists in Britain. The left’s sympathy, at the time, was overwhelmingly with the Israeli state, considering its establishment a recompense to the Jewish people for the Holocaust. It was only after the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, that the new left in Britain began to articulate a critical attitude to Israel and support for Palestinian nationalism. It is a perspective which has gradually gained ground in the political mainstream.

A Newly Updated and Rebranded Edition of The Deliberate Church If churches are the dwelling place of God's Spirit, why are so many built around the strategies of man? Eager for church growth, leaders can be lured by entertaining new schemes, forgetting to keep doctrinal truth as their driving force. Churches must find a way out of the maze of programs and methods and humbly lean on the sufficiency of God's Word. How to Build a Healthy Church, a revised and expanded edition of The Deliberate Church, challenges leaders to evaluate their motivations for ministry and provides practical examples of healthy, deliberate leadership. Written as a companion handbook for Nine Marks of a Healthy Church, it covers important topics including membership, worship, responsible evangelism, and church roles. This is more than a step-by-step plan to mimic; it's a biblical blueprint for pastors, elders, and anyone committed to the church's vitality.
There is a lot at stake as it pertains to correctly understanding and teaching God’s call to repent. God makes amazing promises about what He will do when his people truly live in repentance. Perhaps nowhere else in the Bible is this promise so clear as in Acts 3:19 (NASB): “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” Repentance brings forgiveness from sins, but there is also a second promise attached to repentance: the presence of God. As you read this book, you’ll consider questions such as: Who does the Bible say God is? What does God think of you? What is the source of our understanding between right and wrong? How can we incorporate the majesty of the Creator into daily life? Other topics include how we take for granted the relationship God has offered us, why we should embrace a posture of humility, and the meaning of true repentance. The Way Back walks readers through a progression that illuminates why true, biblical repentance is at the heart of what it means to walk with God.
A Call to Follow Jesus When He Challenges Our Traditions There are many challenges to adequately representing Jesus to the majority world, and often Western Christian traditions create unnecessary hindrances to people accepting His truth. This book grew out of many interviews with Indian Jesus-followers—both Christians and Yesu bhaktas—who identified painful stumbling blocks to receiving and sharing the gospel. While Hindus often have a high view of Jesus, they struggle with the conventions, practices, and labels around "church." Christian Barriers to Jesus uniquely challenges readers to examine nine barrier-producing Christian traditions, exploring: • The assumptions Christians may hold about the value, origin, or necessity of their customs • The concerns Hindus commonly raise about traditions that confuse, offend, or alienate them • Teachings from Jesus in Scripture that often question the same ideas or practices Pennington suggests that by not asking deep enough questions about what is essential for following Jesus and what is a non-essential human invention, the church is unnecessarily alienating millions of people from Him. As a body, it is time to honestly address these concerns, developing new patterns of discipleship that reveal Jesus’s heart for breaking down barriers instead of creating them. The analysis presented in this book will empower readers to critically examine their personally cherished traditions and the purity of the gospel they present, with insights that are relevant in all contexts.
There is a way of life humanity abandoned long ago, but we can still blend it with the way we live today to overcome suffering. In this book, the author looks back at growing up in Liberia, including the influence Americans played during his boyhood. They taught and preached human rights every day and exported their culture into every corner of Africa, including their ways of dressing, celebrating, eating, and even making love. He recalls how his father was assassinated, how his eldest brother moved to America, and how he and his siblings dreamed of one day following in his footsteps. That dream gave them the strength to stick together. He also shares observations on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has plunged the Western world into crises. He wonders whether there will ever be peace and financial equality. He concludes that the cause of most wars boils down to jealousy and envy.

As the most overwhelming and frightening Last-Day prophecies are beginning to cast their shadows on an unsuspecting world, Crouch offers an opportunity to find meaning in current world events and reminds us that everything ultimately leads to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. “Reading The Shadow of the Apocalypse is like reading tomorrow’s news headlines. Read this book today!”—Dr. Jack Van Impe, author of Revelation Revealed “This book is about an alarming topic, and yet Paul Crouch infuses it with the eternal promise from Christ.”—Tim LaHaye, co-author of Left Behind

From the Casey Award–winning author of Bill Veeck: Baseball's Greatest Maverick, the first full biography of Leo Durocher, one of the most colorful and important figures in baseball history. Leo Durocher (1906–1991) was baseball's all-time leading cocky, flamboyant, and galvanizing character, casting a shadow across several eras, from the time of Babe Ruth to the Space Age Astrodome, from Prohibition through the Vietnam War. For more than forty years, he was at the forefront of the game, with a Zelig-like ability to be present as a player or manager for some of the greatest teams and defining baseball moments of the twentieth century. A rugged, combative shortstop and a three-time All-Star, he became a legendary manager, winning three pennants and a World Series in 1954. Durocher performed on three main stages: New York, Chicago, and Hollywood. He entered from the wings, strode to where the lights were brightest, and then took a poke at anyone who tried to upstage him. On occasion he would share the limelight, but only with Hollywood friends such as actor Danny Kaye, tough-guy and sometime roommate George Raft, Frank Sinatra, and his third wife, movie star Laraine Day. As he did with Bill Veeck, Dickson explores Durocher's life and times through primary source materials, interviews with those who knew him, and original newspaper files. A superb addition to baseball literature, Leo Durocher offers fascinating and fresh insights into the racial integration of baseball, Durocher's unprecedented suspension from the game, the two clubhouse revolts staged against him in Brooklyn and Chicago, and Durocher's vibrant life off the field.
Critics outside the church often accuse the Old Testament God of genocide, racism, ethnic cleansing, and violence. But a rising tide of critics within the church claim that Moses and other "primitive," violence-prone prophets were mistaken about God's commands and character. Both sets of critics dismiss this allegedly harsh, flawed, "textual" Old Testament God in favor of the kind, compassionate, "actual" God revealed by Jesus. Are they right to do so? Following his popular book Is God a Moral Monster?, noted apologist Paul Copan confronts false, imbalanced teaching that is confusing and misleading many Christians. Copan takes on some of the most difficult Old Testament challenges and places them in their larger historical and theological contexts. He explores the kindness, patience, and compassion of God in the Old Testament and shows how Jesus in the New Testament reveals not only divine kindness but also divine severity. The book includes a detailed Scripture index of difficult and controversial passages and is helpful for anyone interested in understanding the flaws in these emerging claims that are creating a destructive gap between the Testaments.
Neil Anderson, author of the bestselling The Bondage BreakerTM, and his coauthors expose the trauma of legalism to let you see how Christ frees you from your efforts to be “good enough for God.” Far too many Christians believe that the Christian life is “trying hard to do what God commands.” But making laws into lords estranges you from Christ. In this liberating book, the authors uncover the chains of legalism: shame, guilt, and pride the keys to liberty: knowing who you are in Christ and resting in the Father’s love the life of freedom: experiencing joyful friendship with God and obeying Him because you love Him If you’re weighed down by rules you can’t possibly keep, here’s encouragement and an appeal to the church to be free in Christ. Previously titled Breaking the Bondage of Legalism.
