Church Ethics and Its Organizational Context is the first book to provide a broadly interdisciplinary approach to understanding the leadership crisis in the Catholic Church in the wake of the sex abuse scandal and how it was handled. The present crisis in the American Catholic Church stems from a two-fold source: lay people are powerless while the bishops are accountable to no one but the pope and the curia. While the number of lay people exercising ministries in the church has grown enormously over the past thirty years (largely due to the shortage of priests), there has been little or no theological reflection till now on the genuine role of the laity. It is only from such reflection that structural reform of the church will come.The first half of The Liberation of the Laity concentrates on the fortunes of the laity, theologically speaking, between Vatican I (1870) and Vatican II (1962-65). It examines the growth of the "new theology" in France in the 1940s and 1950s and shows how in the work of one of its leading practitioners, Yves Congar, much of the vision of the laity expressed at Vatican II was anticipated. Seeing the years after the council as decades of missed opportunities to recognize the role of the laity, the book then turns to a series of constructive proposals for the liberation of the laity, and thus the liberation of the church. It discusses the importance of "secularity," the need for a "lay liberation theology," and the centrality of the struggles against global capitalism in the mission of the church. It ends with a chapter envisioning dramatic changes in ministry and governing structures, in which accountability will be central, "servant leaders" will include women and married people, and both ecclesiastical careerism and the College of Cardinals will be history.
The Politics of Salvation takes a radical stance: it focuses on the significance of the state in the Hegelian system when it is viewed as inspired and motivated by the Christian notion of God. The book thus makes connections between Hegel’s political philosophy and his explicit appropriation of Christianity’s incarnational mode of thinking. In unfolding the implications of this position, Lakeland shows how Hegel’s thought can offer the basis for a non-dualistic account of the human being as religious and political. This conjunction allows for a theology which sees politics as the arena of salvation providing a practical religious outlook relevant to the contemporary world and, in particular, to the commitments of Latin America’s liberation theology. The author writes: “If Hegel can be understood (as he frequently expressed himself) as expressing conceptually in speculative philosophy what religion expresses in the form of image and representation, then the covenantal demands of justice and freedom from oppression, the Christian struggle for a free and authentic humanity, and Christian hope in the kingdom of God, will all find their counterpart in the Hegelian system.” Thus this Hegelian political theology can “illuminate the connections between the expectation of salvation and the struggle for liberation.”
This book explains to the hillwalker, in easy to understand but accurate terms, how geology has shaped the landscape of the Cumbrian Lakeland. A selection of fifteen guided walks are used to illustrate this in terms of what can be seen on the ground. Divided into two parts, Paul describes the view out over the fells and back through time, charting the formation of the Cumbrian Lake District. Factors such as undersea sedimentation, tectonic collisions which heaved up the land, great flows of lava and explosive eruptions which mixed and reformed old rock, catastrophic caldera collapses, freeze/thaw creation of rocky tors, the pointed tops of pikes carved by the flowing glaciers and the human influence of mining and tourism have all contributed to shape the landscape.The second half of the book describes fifteen walks ranging from easy to challenging, with revealing views of the geology.
The case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was the precursor for the civil rights movement, which followed in the 1950s through the 1960s. A civil-rights movement did not exist on the advent of Brown. Brown gave the direction for the movement because it established the fact that the black man had all the legal rights under the Constitution as any other citizen. The road to Brown, however, was a slow, evolutionary process of change within the federal government. The case was the result of political, social, and economic forces applied by the federal government in retrieving power from the states, which it abrogated after the Civil War. The term federalization as used in this book refers not only to the evolutionary process of gaining power, but also to one in which the change of form and objectives of government were essential. The Depression of the 1930s began the shift of power.
